Chapter 30
CHAPTER
THIRTY
Maddie put her phone away before anyone could see the message.
Who had sent her that text?
She knew the answer—the person who'd sent the text was the same one who'd hoped she would be hurt on the balcony.
She'd briefly considered Josh. It was his idea to go out there. He was the one who'd stepped toward her causing her to take a step back.
Would he really take things that far?
She wanted the answer to be a resounding no, but she couldn't say it was.
Right now, he paced, almost as if he were nervous.
Harris was still in the room with them, along with Brody and Adrienne. Maddie had a feeling that Josh wanted them to leave, but Maddie wanted them there. If Josh tried to make them give them some privacy, she vowed to raise a fuss.
"Unfortunately, the resort is at capacity right now, and we don't have any other rooms to offer," Harris said. "Is there someone else you could stay with until the balcony is fixed?"
Josh looked at her, but she shook her head.
His nostrils flared, but he kept his expression even otherwise. "If you could do a temporary fix on the balcony, I think I'll be fine."
"Very well." Harris turned to the head of maintenance and asked him to get some supplies.
As he left, a woman in a navy-blue skirt and white blouse stepped inside and introduced herself as the head of IT.
"I have the security footage." The woman went to the table, opened her laptop, and without missing a beat began typing something.
She clearly meant business.
"Here's the person who entered your room at twelve-thirty." She hit Play before looking back at Josh. "Do you recognize her?"
Her?
Maddie rose and stepped closer for a better look at this person.
Her eyes narrowed as she watched someone pause outside Josh's room, glance around, and then swipe a card and step inside.
Maddie couldn't see the woman's face since her back was to the camera, but something about her seemed awfully familiar.
They continued to wait, the woman at the computer fast-forwarding to the part where the intruder left. Then she paused the footage.
Maddie leaned closer for a better look.
Her mouth gaped open when she realized who it was.
Logan.
Logan had been in Josh's room at twelve-thirty.
Why did that woman have a key to get into his room? And had she messed with the balcony? Even worse—what if Logan and Josh had schemed this together, all in hope of seeing Maddie harmed?
Maddie's gaze turned to Josh, and she didn't bother to hide the accusation in her eyes. "Why in the world does Logan have a key to your room?"
Josh raised his hands, his voice terse as he said, "I can explain."
Maddie crossed her arms over her chest, not caring if they had an audience. She knew Josh hated looking bad in front of others. But right now, Josh's opinion didn't matter.
"I gave Logan a key and asked if she could come up to my room and grab a revised schedule for me."
"Why would you need her to do that for you? Are you saying you don't have access to this revised schedule via your phone?" Maddie wasn't going to be taken for a fool. This sounded like a lame excuse he'd made up to ensure he didn't look bad.
"We should go." Adrienne stood and pointed to the door.
Brody took a step but hesitated, almost as if he didn't feel comfortable leaving Maddie with Josh. Or maybe she was imagining things.
She wasn't sure.
She nodded to reassure him she'd be okay.
With one last glance from Brody, he and Adrienne slipped from the suite.
"The hotel requested a printed copy of the schedule, so I asked Logan to come to my room and print one," Josh explained when they were gone. "She is on the event committee, so it made sense for her to take care of that detail."
"She didn't have a copy of the revised schedule in her own belongings?" Maddie asked.
Josh's gaze flickered with irritation. "She had one on her computer, but she didn't have a printer. I needed a hard copy."
His words stopped Maddie.
Josh had brought a printer. The kind of printer that might have been used to send that note to her?
The question echoed in her head.
She shouldn't be surprised that Josh had a printer. He had brought two large suitcases with him on the trip. She'd only brought one medium-sized one.
Josh probably wanted to print out his acceptance speech for when he was named president. Or print information on this new product launch. She supposed there were multiple reasons.
Even though his excuse—whatever it was—might be viable, Maddie still didn't like what she'd seen.
"Can we talk about this later?" Josh lowered his voice and cut his gaze toward the other people in the room.
Maddie shook her head. "You know what? I'm suddenly not feeling well. I'm going to skip out on the concert tonight and go lie down."
"Madison—" Josh started.
"I just need some time by myself."
Before anyone could stop her, Maddie stormed from Josh's room. At this point, she didn't care if she ever saw or spoke to the man again.
