25. Chapter 25
The sounds of the gunfire around us gets my blood pumping, my adrenaline skyrocketing. I already want to hurt the uncles for everything that has happened over the last twelve years, but the moment they started shooting at us, they signed their own death warrants.
I will torture both of them and do it with a smile.
Taking a quick look around the side of the desk we are using as cover, I shoot aimlessly in the direction that the gunfire is coming from. It allows me to take stock of the situation while the shooters duck for cover.
It isn't the uncles currently shooting at us. The fuckers set up a front line defence, but I can see the both of them in Matthew's office through their open door. They are hiding behind that desk in a similar position to how Beck and I are. I can't help but laugh, and Beck rolls his eyes when he hears my soft cackle.
We don't have endless ammunition though, and I'm sure that the guys between us and the uncles are packing a lot more firepower than we grabbed. But I did remember to grab a little something extra from the apartment before we left, so when a figure suddenly appears beside me, pointing a gun down at my head, I don't hesitate. The knife is already out and buried in the guy"s thigh before he can even think of twitching his finger on the trigger.
Unfortunately, he doesn't have to think about it though. It ends up being his body's automatic response and the bullet missing me by an inch and burying in the floor beside me as he goes down, blood gushing from where I cut his femoral artery. The rapid blood loss is already making him weak and I'm able to take the gun out of his hand with no issues.
Gunfire explodes around us again as I'm reaching toward the military vest on the guy's chest to check for extra clips, so I am forced to take cover instead. The fuckers.
During a lull, I quickly reach out and yank the knife back out of the lifeless body, the blood is now disappointingly only a trickle. More bullets hit the ground where my hand was reaching a second before, some also hitting the body of their fallen comrade, making it twitch and I shoot a grin at Beck.
Beck peers around his side of the desk, rapidly firing in the direction of the assholes shooting at us.
Beck"s gun goes dry, and he growls in frustration as he swings back behind the desk, seeking cover from the barrage of bullets now aimed in his direction. Without hesitation, I hand him the gun I just stole, ensuring he"s armed and ready for the next round of gunfire.
As I glance around the side of the desk, I spot Nix swinging out from behind a nearby pillar. Taking advantage of the distraction caused by their focus on Beck, Nix unleashes a precise volley of shots, and I hear the satisfying cries of two different men before Nix retreats back into cover.
The chaos kicks up a notch as I quickly glance around the desk again. The door to Matthew"s office is now shut tight, probably barricaded. And just as I spot another gun aimed my way, I duck back behind cover. Beck takes the opportunity to nail another shooter.
"You really wanna die today?" Beck shouts out, and I can"t help but laugh. It"s like we"re playing a deadly game of whack a mole, except with bullets instead of a mallet.
The last guy takes the bait, leaving his cover with a frustrated growl in an attempt to unleash hell on us. Nix doesn"t waste a second, and his shot takes the guy down before he knows what hit him.
Now we just have to get through the door to their office. With no more shooters, we move toward it. It doesn't take much for Beck to shoot out the handle and I then kick the door open wide.
Nix and Beck already have their guns aimed and ready, but so do Matthew and Simon. I'm not prepared for the flash of surprise that crosses their faces though.
"Pheonix? What the fuck?" Simon exclaims in confusion.
"Seriously? Who did you think you were shooting at if you didn't know it was us?" Nix growls out at them, his aim not wavering in the slightest.
"We had an alert in our system, a warning that there was a kill squad about to storm the building. We were told you were coming to kill us," Matthew says.
