Chapter One

Anika

“Isaac coming to pick you up?” Rowan asks. Rowan has been my boss for eight years now. I started as an intern and now I am the lead publishing agent at Genesis Press Inc. We just flew in from Los Angeles. We weren’t actually due to come back until tomorrow. Because I am second in command now, if Rowan goes then I go with him.

Rowan is quiet and brooding most of the time. Generally, he doesn’t say anything unless he has to, but I’m sure he listens to everything. I have a love-hate relationship traveling with Rowan. I love it because it’s stress-free and I actually get to relax in the silence of my own room. I hate it because he is even more quiet than usual. We interact and I often will end up with him in his room to eat dinner, but he is so reserved.

Mia Williams is my best friend and coworker. We’ve known each other since we started out as interns here. She knows every tiny detail about me. There isn’t anything that she and I can’t discuss.

“I called him a few times, but I think he is asleep. I’ll just take an Uber home,” I say as I grab my bag out of the backseat of Rowan's truck.

“I can drop you off,” he offers.

“It’s late,” I say as I shake my head. “You go ahead and go home. I’m going to put my laptop in my office while I wait for my ride.”

“Anika, it’s not a big deal,” he pushes.

“Seriously. It’s okay, Rowan. Go home,” I smile and step onto the sidewalk.

“Alright,” he sighs. “Text me when you get home so I know you didn’t get killed.”

“I will. Have a good night,” I say before going to the front door of the office building and sliding my key into the lock. As soon as I am in the building and have the alarm shut off, Rowan pulls out of the lot.

This building is old and creepy. I force myself to be a big girl and not turn every light in this place on as I make my way to my office. I request a ride and put my laptop on its charger while I wait.

It would be much easier if Isaac had answered my calls and texts, but whatever. He’s been acting sketchy the last few months. Isaac has always been a dick and has likely been cheating the entire time, but he’s damn good at hiding it. I keep thinking he’s cheating, but I am finding no evidence of another person. I have even gone as far as checking his phone. Admittedly, I know that that is an invasion of privacy, but what else am I supposed to do? We don’t have sex anymore. He is supposedly at work late multiple nights a week. He works as an accountant. What possibly could keep him at the office until eleven in the evening?

I see that my ride is a few minutes out, so I grab my things and hurriedly walk through the darkness to the front. I set the alarm before slipping out and locking the door.

My ride pulls up and I verify the license plate before jumping in. I can’t wait to get in bed and go to sleep. Although I would love to go in and pitch a fit over Isaac not answering his phone all day, that can wait until tomorrow.

I pull up to the house and a wave of anxiety smacks me when I see my sister’s red BMW sitting in my driveway behind Isaac’s car. It is one in the morning. There is absolutely no reason she should be here at all, let alone this late.

My stomach is churning as I walk up to the front door. I decide to enter as quietly as I possibly can. If they are fucking like my gut is telling me, I want to catch them together. I don’t want there to be any mistake about what is happening. No room for doubt. I’m going to feel like a massive bitch if she’s here because something is wrong.

I slowly turn my key in the lock until I hear it click. When I enter, I am greeted by the loud moans of my sister accompanied by an unmistakable sound of skin slapping against skin.

That fucking bitch.

I’m going to fucking kill both of them. Not only is Isaac cheating, but he’s in our bed fucking my older sister. The same sister who has had it out for me my entire fucking life. Everything that was mine, she took. It’s like she couldn’t stand for me to have anything remotely good. Not that Issac is “good”, but still. I don’t know why I thought my relationships were any different.

I stop and take a deep breath before I end up in jail for a double homicide. I quietly close the door and set my stuff down on the couch. I text Rowan so that he doesn’t come looking for me in fear of my potential death.

Me

I’m home

Rowan

Thank you for letting me know. Have a good night.

“Oh, God. Isaac,” Harper moans.

“You like that, baby?” Isaac grunts.

I put my phone away and take slow steps to the back bedroom. I don’t know what I’ll do when I get in there, but I refuse to blow up. I will not look like the crazy one. I am going to just get my shit and get out. I take another deep breath before I sling the door open and step into the bedroom.

The scene I am walking in on is just as vile as I imagined. My sister is on the bed on her elbows and knees. My fiancé is on his knees behind her and balls deep. They are both completely naked and have noticeable sweat on their bodies. I think I just interrupted them seconds before they were going to come.

Oh well.

Isaac stops mid-stroke and snaps his head in my direction, which triggers Harper to do the same. They pull away and leap up from the bed the moment their eyes meet mine.

“Anika! Baby, I can explain,” Isaac says hurriedly. He steps close to me, but I put my hand up and stop him. I look at my sister who looks absolutely terrified. She is stunned into silence whereas Isaac won't shut the fuck up. Truth be told, I stopped listening the moment he said my name.

I sigh heavily and walk to the closet shaking my head. I don’t know what my plan is once I leave but If I stay in this house, one or both of them will die. I wouldn’t say I have anger issues, but I do have a nasty temper.

“Anika, what are you doing? Please talk to me,” Isaac begs. I look up at him and glare at him until he shuts the fuck up. I turn back to the closet and pull down bags.

“We were going to tell you tomorrow. You weren’t supposed to be home until tomorrow, Anika,” Isaac says, trying to justify the situation.

I take the bags over to the bed and start filling them with my stuff. Luckily, I don't keep an overwhelming amount of clothing. I throw my clothes in then grab all of my little stuff. Once I’m done, I zip up the bags and take them to the living room. They don’t follow me at first but when they do appear, they are dressed.

I go from room to room collecting my stuff and taking it to my growing pile of belongings. I don’t want any reason to come back into this house.

When I am done gathering my possessions, I go to the office and find the checks I had written out from my bank to pay the rent, power, and water bills. I rip them up because I am certainly not paying for a home I don’t live in anymore. I have spent years paying for everything myself. I drained my savings, and we live paycheck to paycheck to keep up with his spending. He can have Harper pay all of his bills now.

They both follow me back and forth to my 4Runner while I load my things. Isaac tries to get me to talk, but I ignore him. I haven’t said a single word, and I am just as surprised as he is. Normally our arguments are screaming matches. Not this time. If I let any of that anger out, all of it will come out. I cannot risk letting myself go to that dark part of my mind.

Just when I am about to leave, I get an idea. It’s a simple idea, but it will be satisfying, nonetheless. I go back inside with my keys hanging around my neck on a lanyard and walk to the hallway closet. Inside is where my gorgeous wedding dress is hanging in its protective bag. Isaac and I are supposed to get married in just over four weeks.

I turn back with the dress in hand and make it to the living room just as they step inside. I hold the dress out to Harper, and she gives me a strange look before glancing at Isaac.

“Anika, what are you doing?” Isaac sighs.

“Take it,” I say to my sister. “Since you like to take what isn’t yours, you may as well take all of it.” She gives me a deadpan expression and doesn’t take the dress. “ Take it! ” I scream at her.

“Anika, I’m sorry,” she whispers as she takes the dress from my hands. Since when does she apologize? Oh, right… When she thinks she’s about to get her ass beat. She’s not sorry. She’s scared.

“Remember you have until next Wednesday to file for the marriage license,” I say as I’m walking to the front door. I turn on my heels and look at my sister again. “Your tits are much smaller, so you’ll want to get that fitted.”

I open the door and step out into the late summer air. I feel a weight lift off my shoulders that I have been struggling to carry for years. I am not even sad or mad about losing Isaac. I’m just angry they lied and went behind my back for God knows how long.

“Anika, stop it and talk to me,” Isaac says as he grabs my arm. The grip he has on my arm hurts and I can tell he is angry that I didn’t give him the reaction he wanted. Now he’s trying to provoke me. I yank my arm away and walk to my truck, wincing at the pain his hand left behind. My arm will definitely be bruised. It’s not the first time he’s left bruises on me, but it will be the last.

I get the house key off of my keychain by the time I get to the door, so I turn and toss it at Harper. She fumbles it at first but ultimately catches it.

“Have a good life. You deserve each other,” I say as I get into the truck and slam the door shut. Isaac comes up to my door, but I lock it before he has a chance to pull it open. In a fit of rage, he punches my window making me involuntarily flinch. The window survives, his hand not so much. He immediately recoils and shakes his hand out to try to ease the pain as blood covers his knuckles. I give him the sweetest smile that I can muster up as I back out of the driveway.

What now? I am not going to my parents or any relatives for that matter. Mia would let me stay with her but she’s going to want me to unpack my feelings. I’m not prepared to do that just yet. For now, I am just going to drive around and clear my head.

My sister has always been the prized daughter. Everyone just loves Harper. Nothing I did was ever good enough for Mom and Dad. They are constantly comparing me to her. The only upper hand that I had was that I was getting married before her. I wish I could just cut ties with all of them.

When our parents find out that I walked in on Harper and Isaac fucking, they’ll blame me somehow. Isaac will probably lie through his teeth to save his own ass considering he works at my father’s accounting firm. Ultimately it won’t matter. They all hate me.

I drive around the city for hours. I should be tired, but I’m not. I do know that I am going to work but Rowan will question me if I show up in the same outfit that he last saw me in. I remember that my gym is open 24/7, so I drive there to shower and change for work. I wonder how long I could get by with sleeping in my car before someone noticed? I don’t want to ask anyone for help. Plus, it wouldn’t take me long to save for a place now that I don’t have any bills to pay outside of my phone bill.

I get back into my truck after getting ready for work and the exhaustion hits me. This is going to be a long day. I go through a drive thru somewhere to get a breakfast sandwich and a coffee before going to the office. I am trying to mentally prepare myself for Mia knowing something is wrong right away. I’m sure it is written all over my face. Also, all of my belongings are in the back of the 4Runner. She will probably jump on me the second I walk in. Hell, even Rowan will notice something is up by the time we go to the meeting.

I step into the office, and I see Ava, our intern, at the front desk. “Good morning, Anika,” she says in a cheery voice.

“Morning,” I say, forcing a smile. I continue to walk toward my office. As I pass Mia’s office, I make eye contact with her then make the mistake of continuing my walk. I hear her jump out of her chair, and I know she’s caught wind already of my foul mood,

“Hey. You look like shit,” Mia says as she falls into step with me.

“Good morning to you too, Mia,” I say flatly as I walk into my office and set my things down.

“What’s wrong?” she asks as she sits on one of the chairs facing my desk.

“If I say nothing, will you drop it?” I ask.

“No. Spill it,” she says as she steals a sip of my coffee. I sigh heavily and flop down into my chair. Rowan’s office is directly beside mine, but I haven’t seen him, so I decide to take this opportunity to tell her without anyone else being able to hear.

“We got in late last night and Rowan dropped me here. Isaac was supposed to be picking me up, but he hadn’t been answering my calls or texts telling him that I was on my way back early… So, I took an Uber home,” I say.

“You caught him cheating, didn’t you?” she asks with a sigh.

“Mhmm. Wanna guess who I caught him balls deep in?” I ask before taking a sip of my coffee.

“That slut, Tina, from the firm?” she guesses.

“No. Harper,” I answer.

“ What?!? ” she says loudly and dramatically.

“Yep. I saw her car when I pulled up and I just knew, so I went in as quietly as possible so I could catch them in the act. When I got into the house she was very obviously getting fucked. When I walked into the bedroom with him fucking her from behind, I wasn’t too surprised. You’ll be proud of me. I didn’t lose my shit. I actually didn’t say anything until I went to leave. I packed my shit then gave Harper the dress and told her to take it since she likes to steal everything else… Oh and told her to get it resized because her titties are too small for it.”

“Jesus Christ, Ani,” she sighs. “If I can get my loser brother off my couch you can come stay with me.”

“You’re good. I have some savings so I’ll just suck it up and stay with Mom and Dad until I can find somewhere,” I lie.

“Are you sure?” she asks.

“Totally,” I force a smile. I don’t want to uproot her life because my sister is a whore who can’t find a dick that isn’t committed to someone else already. Again, not that we were having sex anyway.

“I’m going to get prepared for the meeting. Get lunch with me today?” she says with a smile. “I’ll be your new sister and I promise to never fuck your man.”

“You were already like my sister and good. I can only restrain myself from double murder so many times,” I say as my phone rings. She giggles and walks away. I groan when I see it is my mom.

“Hello?” I answer.

“Harper called me in tears last night,” she says with a disapproving tone.

“Oh?” I say, playing dumb.

“She told me what happened between you all last night,” Mom states.

“Okay?”

“Care to explain why you were so mean to your sister?” she asks.

“You are fucking kidding me, right?” I laugh without a single drop of humor in my tone.

“You watch your mouth, young lady” she scolds me.

“You are really making this my fault?”

“She is your sister, Anika. You were raised better than this. You best call her and apologize for body shaming her and screaming at her,” my mother says. Is this a joke? I knew I’d get blamed but goddamn.

“I am not apologizing to Harper,” I deadpan.

“And why not?” As I start yelling at my mom, I glance up to see Rowan at my door.

“ I am not apologizing to that bimbo whore for fucking my fiancé. I will not apologize to her for anything because I’m the one who walked in on that. I’m the one who just lost a six-year relationship to a slut who can’t keep her dirty little hands-off committed men . They both can go fuck themselves! ” Rowan steps into my office and shuts the door before sitting across from me.

“You are an ungrateful bitch, Anika. Your father and I did not raise you to treat your family this way. We are having a family dinner tomorrow night. I expect you to be there,” Mom says.

“You call me an ungrateful bitch then expect me to show up to family dinner where you and I both know Harper will bring Isaac?” I say.

“She is bringing Isaac, and you are coming. We are going to talk this through as a family. It’s not up for discussion,” she says before abruptly hanging up.

I drop my phone to my desk before leaning back in my chair and closing my eyes for a second. Rowan is quiet as usual, but I can feel him staring at me.

“Need money for a lawyer?” Rowan asks. “Or a shovel to dig a hole?” I smile at his wit.

“No. Just caffeine,” I say as I open my eyes and sigh.

“What happened?” he asks.

“Well… Uber dropped me off and my sister was there,” I say. I go through the events devoid of emotion. I think I am becoming numb to it already.

“Wow… And your mom wants you to apologize?” he asks.

“Yeah, now I have no choice but to go to this stupid dinner and listen to them tell me that Harper and Isaac will get married instead of me and Isaac. They will expect me to be a participant, I’m sure. If I don’t show, they’ll blow me up until I do show up,” I say.

“Take Mia with you,” he suggests.

“I’ll probably do that,” I agree with his idea.

“Where are you staying?” he asks.

“A friend from high school until I can find a place,” I lie.

“I’m sorry that happened,” he frowns. “Let me know if you need anything, okay?”

“I will,” I lie again. It’s not in my nature to ask for help, especially from Rowan. Rowan is probably the sweetest man on the planet. I can’t take advantage of him. I’ll live in my car before I admit I need help. I guess I am already living in my car because I do need help, but I refuse to ask for it.

“Are you good for the meeting?” he asks.

“Yeah, I prepped everything on the plane last night,” I say as I grab my laptop and phone as I stand.

When we exit my office Mia is waiting. “Hi, sunshine,” she says as she hands me coffee. “It’s a day for double-fisting.”

“Don’t tell Harper that,” I say, and Mia giggles as we walk to the conference room. Mia, Rowan, and I are the last ones to walk in. I take a seat between Rowan and Mia at the front.

“Good morning,” Rowan says to everyone. “We are running a few minutes behind, so let’s jump right in.” Rowan goes over quarterly projections for sales for what we currently have in the process of publication. I recently took on a few big-name authors. Most of my clients are pretty easygoing, but Andrea Davis will be the reason I go gray at twenty-six.

She is constantly up my ass about every little thing. For as many books that she has published with us, you’d figure she’d have a bit more faith in me than reminding me of my own deadlines every other day. I realize I’ve zoned out when Mia nudges me and I notice everyone is staring at me.

“What do you have going on currently, Anika?” Rowan repeats for me.

“Sorry,” I mumble and sit up in my seat. “Next week, Andrea Davis has one book publishing and another going on presale that will be published in three months. Clay Jefferson is releasing a series of five today. The projections for that looked promising. I’ll have an update to give you and him in the next hour. Outside of that, I have a handful that have draft deadlines coming up,” I say without looking at my notes once. I don’t know why I even take notes considering I never look at them .

“That's great. Good job, Anika,” he says as he moves on to Mia. I glance at my phone to see Isaac texted me.

Isaac

We need to talk.

Me

No, we don’t.

Isaac

Why can’t we sit down and talk this through?

Me

Because you fucked my sister in our bed?

Isaac

You are really willing to throw six years away?

You seemed pretty willing when you were railing my sister last night. How many others were there?

Isaac

I’m not doing this with you right now. We need to talk in person.

Me

So you can leave more bruises on my arms again? No thanks.

Isaac

I did not grab you that hard. Don’t be dramatic, Anika.

Me

Are you going to the family dinner with Harper?

Isaac

Yes. I assume you are as well?

Me

Oh, dear ol’ Mom wouldn’t pass up the chance to let me know how much more superior Harper is than me. Just to make it clear now, I have no interest in talking to you or her. I will listen to Mom and Dad, but that’s it.

Isaac

I want to fix us, Anika.

Me

No. You want to be in control. I took that control when I left without reacting. Go fuck yourself and stop texting me.

I slide my phone over to Mia for her to read the messages while everyone else is going through their plans for next week. She rolls her eyes and hands me my phone back.

“You good?” Rowan asks me quietly as Marvin is taking forever to cover his one author. I open the text backup and hand him my phone. Rowan is visibly tense when he hands my phone back to me. I give Mia a confused look.

“You just showed the man who has the hots for you that your ex put his hands on you and left bruises,” she leans in to whisper to me.

“He does not,” I whisper back to her with a deep frown. Rowan doesn’t talk to anyone… Well… Besides me and Mia.

“Watch. When we get out of here he’s going to corner you and ask about the bruises. He will probably want to see them,” she smiles.

I’m struggling to stay awake through the rest of the meeting. Rowan finally dismisses everyone. I go to walk out and Rowan stops me.

“Stay,” he says. I sigh heavily and Mia laughs. Just because he cares if I am bruised doesn’t mean anything. “Mia, close the door please.” Mia nods then walks over to shut the conference room door.

“Let me see,” he says simply.

“Rowan, it’s not a big deal,” I proclaim.

“If he left bruises on you, it is a big deal. Show me,” he says. His tone is deadly serious. I am definitely not getting out of this.

“You’re going to get Mia a murder charge. It’s not a big deal. It’s done and over with now,” I say quietly.

“Woman, I will take that shirt off of you myself,” Mia threatens.

“Fine.” I take my thin white blouse off, leaving me in my bright red camisole to reveal a blackish-purple handprint-shaped bruise.

“Oh, my God,” Mia gasps.

“Jesus, Anika,” Rowan says as he has a hold on my wrist to hold my arm out. In hindsight, I shouldn’t have shown them the texts because now they are both staring at the bruise on my bicep.

“I’m going to fucking kill him,” Mia seethes. She may be four-foot-eleven and hardly one hundred pounds but my God she is scary when she’s mad.

“No one is killing anyone,” I tell her firmly.

“Is she going with you to the family dinner?” Rowan asks.

“Not now,” I say as I take my arm back from Rowan and put my shirt back on.

“Yes the fuck I am,” she declares.

“Mia, they will call the cops on you the second they have a chance, and you know it. I will go and get this shit over with and move on like I’ve done every other time,” I say. “I know you are more than willing to drop-kick a man twice your size, but I won’t let you get yourself in trouble either. You know how my parents are.”

“Fine, then bring Rowan with you,” she says.

“I am a big girl, Mia. I can handle Isaac and my family,” I say.

“You and I both know that based on those texts, he is going to corner you and try to make you talk to him, Ani,” Mia says softer.

“He’s not going to hurt me,” I sigh.

“ He already has ,” she says, raising her voice. “Pick. Me or Rowan.” I look at Rowan and he has the same tense look on his face.

“You don’t need to be alone with someone who finds it easy to do that ,” Rowan says pointing at my arm.

“You are not coming, Mia,” I tell her again.

“Then Rowan,” Mia says.

“You already know how bad of an idea that is,” I glare at her.

“Why?” Rowan asks.

“Isaac hates you,” Mia tells him.

“Why does he hate me?” he asks, confused.

“He thinks that you two are fucking when you have to leave town. Every time she comes back it ends up in a screaming match because he can’t wrap his tiny brain around people being able to be alone with each other without getting naked,” Mia explains.

“He will blow the fuck up if I walk up in there with Rowan,” I tell Mia.

“You don’t think Rowan can handle him?” Mia asks.

“I’m sure he can, but he shouldn’t have to. It is far easier If I go alone.”

“You are not going alone,” Rowan says.

“Wait a second…” Mia says, glaring at me.

Shit, shit, shit . I’ve already blown my cover story to pieces. I’m too tired to be deceptive.

“Why would you walk in there with him if you are staying there?” she asks, still staring me down. She can smell my lie clearly now. I can feel Rowan’s eyes on me now also. Fuck .

“You said you were staying with a friend from high school,” Rowan says, narrowing his eyes at me.

“What? Where are you staying for real?” Mia asks.

“Mia,” I sigh and sit down at the table.

“Where did you stay last night?” Rowan asks.

“I drove around all night and went to my gym to get ready,” I admit. I opt to pull my phone out to fight off the nerves. I can’t handle how they are staring at me. Mia stomps over and yanks the phone from my hand and tosses it on the table. She squats down in front of me and takes my hands.

“Were you just planning on staying in your truck because you didn’t want to ask for help?” she asks softly. I nod as tears well up in my eyes. I’ve done well with not crying. I don’t want the first time I break down to be at work.

“I can get Caleb out tonight and you can stay with me,” she says.

“You can’t make your brother homeless,” I say as I wipe away a tear rolling down my cheek.

“You are already homeless, Anika,” she says with firmness in her voice.

“I have a guest room you can take over,” Rowan says as he sits in the chair beside me and points for Mia to sit also.

“No, Rowan,” I snap.

“Why?” he asks.

“You think walking into my parent's house with you will make him blow up? He will lose his goddamn mind if he finds out that I moved in with you, even if it's only until I find a place.”

“Why do you give a shit what he thinks, Ani?” Mia asks.

“I don’t,” I say.

“Then you are scared of him,” Rowan says.

“Has he hurt you before?” Mia asks.

“Depends on how you look at it,” I mumble and look at my hands.

“What does that mean?” she asks.

“He’s left bruises like that before from grabbing me. He’s never actually hit me, but he’s thrown shit at me before and threatened to hurt me when we get into a bad enough fight,” I admit. “All of our fights were over him thinking I was fucking someone. Mostly Rowan. Any one male who so much as looked at me for too long was also assumed to be someone I was involved with or someone I wanted to be involved with,” I explain. “And before you two see me as some battered victim, I very much played a role in these fights.”

“Anika, he is nearly a foot taller than you. He threw things at you and constantly blamed you for doing things you weren’t. You may have played a role in the fighting but I’ll bet anything it was only reactive.” Rowan says.

“It doesn’t matter. It doesn’t need a label,” I say as I continue to look at my hands in my lap.

“My point is, I’m helping you whether you want it or not,” Rowan says simply. I sigh and lean back in my chair to look at Rowan.

Rowan Garcia is six-feet-two-inches of muscle. He’s not so ripped that he looks like he lives at the gym, but he definitely enjoys working out. He has stunning blue eyes, neatly styled dark brown hair with an equally as neat beard. Rowan is without a doubt a gorgeous man. I don’t know if I can handle being in his home when I’ve been without sex. He’s too delicious. He’s too sweet and caring.

I am happy with how I look, outside of my belly being too big. Mia scolds me all of the time for hating on my belly. I feel like I make up for it by having a nice ass and breasts that could stop a man in his tracks. My long blonde hair is frizzy but manageable if I’m nice enough to it.

The fact that I am comparing us physically as far as compatibility says that living in his home is a recipe for disaster.

“Rowan, I don’t need pity protection” I frown.

“How much do you have in savings?” Mia asks.

“Yeah… About that,” I say slowly.

“For the love of God, Anika. You had almost ten thousand saved not two years ago. How much?” she asks.

“I have nothing left in savings,” I grimace and she throws her hands up.

“Where did it go?” Rowan asks.

“I paid all of the bills. He spends way too much fucking money so I ended up funding his shit. It caught up to me and it all disappeared,” I admit.

“Does he have access to your money?” Mia asks.

“Yeah, I need to pull my direct deposit so he can’t take it. I already pulled cash out from an ATM last night when I was driving around,” I say.

“I’ll take care of that. I’ll just switch it to paper checks,” Rowan says.

“Thank you,” I say.

“You are still staying with me, Anika. It will give you a chance to save some money again and it keeps you from sleeping in your truck.”

“Don’t argue, Ani. It’s not going to work this time,” Mia says firmly.

“Fine,” I groan dramatically, making Mia and Rowan laugh.

“Go get some work done and I’ll handle your paycheck,” he says as he pats my knee with a sweet smile and stands. “If you go tomorrow, I’m coming with you. I don’t care what you tell them, but you are not going alone.”

“Yeah, yeah. I hear you,” I say as I gather my things. When Rowan leaves the room I cut Mia off before she has the chance to say anything. “Don’t read into it, Mia.”

“You’ll see. One of these days you’ll text me and say you had the best sex of your life with Rowan,” Mia says.

“It’s not happening,” I frown at her.

God, I wish it could happen though.
