At the end
“ S he liked the waves. The ocean. She wanted to see the world, you know? She wanted to see it all.”
The silenced sliced my heart open.
Poppy liked the silence.
She was always better at dealing with it than me.
My surfboard rocked beneath my weight, the waves dancing across my skin. In each comforting kiss of water, I felt the weight of her smile. In each wave that washed over the surface of my board, I heard her laughter. And as I glanced out towards the forests enveloping our small town, I saw the precise shade of green that speckled in her eyes.
But I held myself together,
just as I promised her I would.
“Please…” I whispered hoarsely .
The water rippled.
The birds chirped.
Moonlight sung.
Just count the waves, Wellsy.
They’ll bring you back to me.
The sound of her heartbeat was intertwined with the very essence of my soul.
I’m home, Jasper. I’m…home.
And I knew she was.
I turned out towards the vast blue one last time.
“Take care of her for me,” I smiled, eyes red and glistening.
And the waves listened, just as I knew they would.
