T he sound of a shrieking rooster drags me from my dream, and I can't say I'm not disappointed as hell at the intrusion. Like most nights, I dreamed of Aiyana curled up in my arms. I just hope that someday soon, I'll be able to make that a reality again.
I grapple for my cell, silencing the alarm. A message from Aiyana is splayed across the screen, and my heart warms in my chest at the sight.
Little Viper
Can you get dad and me tickets for your game next Monday?
Sure, does he want box seats or close to the ice?
Little Viper
Do you forget who you're talking about?
Little Viper
The closer to the action, the better. He wouldn't feel right in a box seat anyway.
Hah, you're right. Two tickets coming right up. Think Kat will want to go or is this just a you and dad thing?
Little Viper
Just us this time. Thanks Kas.
Anything for you.
And I mean it. I'd do anything for her.
Though I also love her dad. I haven't gotten to see him this week, and I'm sure if Aiyana knew I went to see her parents each week since she's been gone, she'd lose her mind with guilt. That's why it's just our little secret. He knows how much she'd worry if she thought he needed my help. I'm not sure if he even did, but I'd like to think I was able to help him and Zuni, Aiyana's mom.
They've been better parents to me than my real parents ever were, and I'll be forever grateful to them for that kindness alone.
