Chapter 57
This time it wasn’t an earthquake that woke me up but a phone call: Liv. I groaned, but luckily it was Connor’s phone rather than mine. He put the call on speaker and I appreciated the implicit trust.
‘Mackenzie.’ Her voice was strident. ‘The barrier gems are all back in place. I’m working on a new rotation schedule so no one is under their influence for very long. Hopefully it’ll be enough until the witches arrive – they should all be here some time next week.’ She paused. ‘This time, do keep a hold of yours.’ She hung up.
‘Charming.’ I yawned.
‘That’s Liv,’ he said drily.
I stretched like a cat and Connor pulled me into his warmth. Things had started to heat up again when my phone pinged with a text. ‘Sorry, it could be work,’ I said, as I checked it. Then I bolted upright. ‘Oh no!’
Connor rolled over and stared at me. ‘What’s wrong? Is it the barrier?’
‘No. What day is it today?’
‘Friday.’
‘Fuck!’
Connor sat up. ‘What’s wrong?’
‘Everything!’ I sighed and dropped my head into my hands. ‘My mum’s here,’ I mumbled. ‘She’s arrived in Portlock.’
Stake. Me. Now.
