Chapter 1

17 years later

T he myriad of sounds and smells of the hospital batter my heightened senses as I walk into the emergency department. The fluorescent artificial lighting above irritates my eyes, and the whining and whirring of the multitude of machines make it difficult to focus on what the portly, sweaty man in front of me is trying to tell me as he flags me down. Don't even get me started on the various scents and odours that are overwhelming my enhanced sense of smell. It may be early in the morning, but it's still just as busy here. It's enough to make most shifters turn tail and run, excuse the pun. But not me. I work as a nurse in A3

Laughing at her message, I feel some of the tension leave my body. This mysterious visitor can't be from ShadowPack if he doesn't have any malicious intent. Anyone from the pack would be radiating bad feelings if they came for me, and Tori would have picked up on it and warned me. So who was this mysterious ‘hottie' who was asking after me?

Hearing the emergency bell ringing brings me back to reality. Right, I'm still at work. I'm not in immediate danger, and I'm not going to let those bastards from Shadow Pack intimidate me and ruin the life I've worked so hard to build here. Walking back over to the mirror, I pull my hair into a ponytail, pleased to see that my eyes have returned to normal. I'll need to be careful though, I can almost see my wolf prowling under my skin. I smile at myself in the mirror, nurse Ari is back. Rolling my shoulders and holding my head high, I walk out into the emergency department. Patients to save, wolf butts to kick. Just another day in my crazy life.
