Epilogue

M arianne Howarth read with great disappointment the London papers' account of her cousin's wedding. Really, it had been a most unconventional affair with an extraordinary guest list such as had probably never assembled in a little country church. And she, Marianne, had been there, mingling in London's best company, the wittiest, most elegant people. She resolved to set the record straight. She took up her pen to write to her dear friend Eloise.

Dear Eloise,

You must have seen the shabby account of my cousin, Lady Cassandra Lavenham's nuptials in our papers. I must tell you how really remarkable the whole affair was.

First, Lady Cassandra and Sir Adrian Cole married on a glorious October morning in the little church of St. Andrews in the village of Wormley. In attendance were the bride's paternal grandmother, Her Grace, the Dowager Duchess of Verwood, the Duke and Duchess of Wenlocke, the groom's grandfather Jedediah Cole, and the bride's aunt, Miss Thornhill. Standing up with the groom was Mr. Jay Kydd of Kydd Brothers Horse Auction House in London.

The dignitaries present were too numerous to name, but Peel was there, and who knows how many of our members of Parliament. I met so many "sirs" you will hardly credit it, even your Sir William Jones and his Lady Helen. The Duke of Wenlocke gave the bride away, and in a break from custom, three young male attendants served to strew the flowers in the bride's path.

It is fair to say that St. Andrew's was packed with both dignitaries and villagers and ever so well-adorned. I think they must have emptied the hot houses at Verwood to supply the roses. And then when the bride and groom emerged from the church, the bride's horse, much beflowered, waited in the church yard. He was a recent winner at Chichester. Her groom lifted her onto its back, her satin cascading down. With Sir Adrian leading the horse, they led a parade of the most elegant carriages from the church to Verwood itself for a breakfast al fresco on the northern terrace, overlooking the recently restored formal garden.

Do let me know when you can come for tea. There is so much more to tell.

Your friend,

Marianne
