26. Bastian

BASTIAN

I took my seat by the window while Sterling sat in the aisle seat, which he always preferred in case there were any flight attendants with an ass worth checking out.

“When we get to Chicago I’ve ordered a limo transfer,” he told me without making eye contact. “Just so you know, it’s a limo for one.”

“Fine by me. I can make my own way.”

“Can you though? I give it two weeks before you’re knocking on my door, begging me to take you back. Spoiler alert, the answer’s no.”

I sighed and settled into my seat, praying that was the last of the conversation. Over the speaker system came the purser’s voice. “Merry Christmas, ladies and gentlemen, we’ll be pulling away from the gate in just a few minutes. At this point, please ensure your seatbelt is fastened low and tight across your lap, all electronic equipment has been switched to flight mode, your tray table is secured, and your seat is in the upright position. We should have you in Chicago by lunchtime, with clear weather and smooth conditions expected all the way.”
