Arcturus Mesarthim

AMAUROTICS

Humans who are not clairvoyant, sometimes known as rotties. They have no connection to the spirit world and are unable to sense it.3

Abberline Mayfield

The former Grand Inquisitor of the Republic of Scion England, who oversaw the invasion of Ireland. Upon his sudden death in 2054, he was superseded by his Minister for Finance, Frank Weaver.

Alice Heron

A Scion key worker who lives in the apartment next door to Colin Mahoney.

Aloïs Mynatt

Grand Raconteur of the Scion Republic of France.

Birgitta Tjäder

Chief of Vigilance in the Scion Citadel of Stockholm and commander of the Second Inquisitorial Division. Tjäder is notorious for her ruthless adherence to Inquisitorial law. She is the archenemy of Nick Nygård, whose sister was murdered by soldiers under her command.

Cathal Bell

The former Minister for Foreign Affairs in Ireland. Though he was popular with the general public, Bell was secretly plotting against his own country, culminating in the Imbolc Massacre (also known as the Dublin Incursion) of 2046. Despite his loyalty to Scion, he was passed over as Grand Inquisitor of Ireland. He lives in London.

Clara Barnes

A former student at the Ancroft School in Bloomsbury. Clara and her friends would often make fun of Paige.

Colin Mahoney

Paige’s father. Formerly known as Cóilín Ó Mathúna, he was a forensic pathologist and spent most of his life in Dublin, away from his family. During the Molly Riots, he was identified as a person of potential value to the Republic of Scion. Under intense pressure from Cathal Bell, Cóilín agreed to move to London. Expecting Ireland to fall to the anchor, he took Paige with him and anglicised their names. He lives on the secure Barbican Estate among other Scion key workers.

Crina Nistor

An amaurotic detained for the nineteenth Bone Season.

Evelyn Ancroft

Schoolmistress of the Ancroft School in Bloomsbury, which was founded by her grandmother. She is a known anchorite (see glossary) who frequently targeted Paige.

Fazal Osman

An amaurotic detained for the nineteenth Bone Season. Fazal was initially assigned to the Residence of Balliol, where Castor Sargas targeted him for standing up for his fellow amaurotics. He was quietly transferred to Magdalen, where he lives on a permanent basis as the day porter and gardener.

Finn Mac Cárthaigh4

Paige’s older cousin through her paternal aunt. Finn was a history student at Trinity College in Dublin. He took Paige to the protest that preceded the Imbolc Massacre and is presumed to have been killed in the ensuing bloodbath, along with his fiancée – Kayleigh Ni Dhornáin – and their closest friends: Anjali Roy, Oscar Keeley, and Temiloluwa Adisa. The only confirmed survivor of the tightknit group was Laoise Ní Cheallaigh, who had not been able to reach the protest.

Frank Weaver

The incumbent Grand Inquisitor of the Republic of Scion England. He succeeded Abberline Mayfield.

Kayleigh Ní Dhornáin

A student at Trinity College who was believed to have been one of the first people killed in the Imbolc Massacre of 2046. Kay was engaged to Paige’s cousin, Finn.

Nita Patel

An amaurotic detained for the nineteenth Bone Season. Nita was stationed at the Residence of Queens and did her best to provide for the performers, especially during the winter.

Radmilo Arežina

An official from the Scion Republic of Serbia.

Reuben Evans

A student at the University of Scion London, who Paige meets at a flash house, Dance upon Nothing.

Sandra McCarthy

Paige’s paternal aunt. Born Alastríona Ní Mhathúna, she used Sandra as a nickname and often gave an anglicised form of her birth name after leaving Tipperary. At the time of the Dublin Incursion, she worked at a hospital in Dún Laoghaire and was living with her spouse and their son, Finn.

Scarlett Burnish

Grand Raconteur of the Republic of Scion England. A fashion icon who is well-liked among the amaurotics of Scion, she reads the approved news and distributes propaganda on the flagship broadcast network, ScionEye.

Sebastian Pearce

An amaurotic detained for the twentieth Bone Season. Seb drew unwanted and dangerous attention when he was subjected to a prank by students at his school, who planted an illegal shew stone in his satchel.

Suzette Fortin

A former student at the Ancroft School in Bloomsbury. Raised in the Scion Citadel of Paris, Suzette befriended Paige5 in their second year at Ancroft. They lost touch after Paige joined the Seven Seals, whereupon Jaxon instructed her to sever or restrict contact with the amaurotics in her life.

1Ella’s surname was originally Parsons – specified in The Mime Order – but on reflection, this surname is unlikely to have survived in Scion.

2The names listed in this section are pseudonyms. Since the true Glossolalic names of the Rephaim are impossible for most humans to articulate, on Earth they use the names of stars – often associated with divinity and fate, and set high above humans.

3It is rare, but possible, for a clairvoyant to become amaurotic through the process of spirit shock (see glossary).

4The modern Irish spelling of this name is Fionn, while Finn is the anglicised form. During my revision of The Bone Season, I considered amending it, since I imagine Paige’s cousin being a staunch opponent of anglicisation. However, since Finn is also the Old Irish spelling – something I suspected he might appreciate – I eventually decided to keep his name as it was in the original.

5Unlike the majority of her classmates, Suzette had not absorbed the hibernophobic sentiment that spread across the Scion Republic of England in the wake of the Molly Riots. In France, this sentiment manifested as a suspicion of Bretons.
