Chapter 36

Remus

My cock began to harden when Zailah bared her baby bump. This is how I imagined her ripe body swollen with my seed. I reached out to touch her bulging belly. Every day, it got a little bigger, and with each passing day, my attachment to our baby grew. The woman waited patiently for me to remove my hand. Zailah had no such compulsion and shoved my hand off her stomach. I almost growled at her.

She was almost three months pregnant, and we got married. I bought an island like she suggested to wait out the next blood moon.

Zailah gripped my arm when the sound of our child’s heartbeat echoed around the room. I could hear it when I put my head over her belly, but this was loud and clear. My baby was announcing its presence.

It looked perfectly formed when the image appeared on the screen. I held my breath as I inspected every part of the baby. Part of me feared that something might go wrong because of the gene editing that I did on both of us.

“I think you might have your dates mixed up. I will measure the baby, but it looks around the six-month mark. I would say between twenty-four to twenty-six weeks,”

the nurse said.

Zailah looked at me in shock, and I stared back at her. We didn't know one another six months ago. The pregnancy should have been at around twelve weeks.

“But everything is normal with the baby?”

Zailah asked, but I could hear the anxiety in her voice.

I leaned down and cupped her cheek in my hand. “Everything will be fine,”

I said softly.

“Yes, the baby is healthy, and everything is developing as it should. I can give you a better timeline for a due date once I've measured this little one up.”

All I could think of was how quickly I could fuck my next child inside her, but judging from Zailah’s expression, that was the last thing on her mind.

“I thought this was a normal-sized bump,”

Zailah said with a nervous laugh.

You're not alone. This happens more often than you think. There is nothing to worry about,”

the nurse assured her. “Do you want to know if it’s a boy or a girl?”

I already knew it was a boy. My son was going to take after his Dad.

“I’d like that. Remus, what do you think?”

“Yes, we would like to know,”

I said, gripping her hand.

“It’s a baby boy,”

she said with a wide smile. “I will print off a few pictures from the scan.”

Zailah’s nails dug into my hand, and I saw tears in her eyes. I leaned down and hugged her to me. I felt her tears on my cheek as she gripped my neck.

“A boy,”

she said before she sniffed happily.

And this is how we found out that our children were not human.

◆◆◆

I was willing to go to any length to protect Zailah and our children. After several days of uneasiness after discovering an email, I broke into Dr Lawrence’s home. It took a while, but I found notes about me and Zailah. They were mainly about Zailah and her experiments. It was more like a diary, but DNA sequences and drawings were at the back of the notebook.

He followed all of my protocols, yet I hadn't accounted for his memory. I put my gloves back on and stuffed the notebook into my waistband beneath my jacket. I walked into the bedroom and went straight for Lawerence. I clamped my hand over his mouth before I dragged him off the bed. His wife didn't move, so I rushed him downstairs until we were in his garden.

“If you raise your voice, I will snap your neck,”

I told him, and he nodded. “You got in touch with Sykonia Pharmaceuticals, and I know what your greedy intentions were. This is why I think of everything.”

“N-no, that wasn't anything to do with you. I swear,”

he stammered and raised his hands.

“Is that why you documented everything from the facility?”

I said with barely controlled fury as I thought of someone harming Zailah or my son.

“Those notes were for myself,”

he lied. “But you have a gift, and so much good could come from it.”

“No, I think you saw an opportunity,”

I said as I moved closer. “Did you think I wouldn't monitor you?”

He swallowed and began to back onto the grass.

“You could have happily lived out your life with what I paid you,”

I said before I closed the gap between us and twisted his head until I heard the satisfying crack.

I pushed him over my shoulder to carry him inside so I could rearrange his body at the bottom of the stairs. My next stop was at Detective Hamilton’s house. He just couldn't let it go, even when his superiors told him to bury it.

Fucking humans.
