8. Gray

My mind was foggy as I tried to open my eyes. Something was next to my ear; it was loud, and it sounded like hissing. I jerked my head away, feeling a massive throbbing on the front of my head. I groaned at the sudden pain, thinking I had either been caught by one of those spiders or those weird cats.

God, I hope I wasn't being ingested while alive.

The pain in my head made it hard to open my eyes, another hiss in my ears and my eyes flew open to a grumpy looking cat hissing at me. My first thought was he looked adorable all pissed off like that famous grumpy cat. My second thought was I couldn't move.

Grumpy cat swatted at my head growling at me when I growled back, and he hissed again. We were in this weird standoff when I heard a little laugh. My eyes immediately looked around the cat to the open door. There was nothing but darkness, but I knew someone was out there.

The cat hissed again as if he wanted to catch my attention and I growled back at him, wishing I could swat him away. My arms were tied against my body as I sat in a chair. I felt sluggish, like I had been hit with one of those magical canceling potions. Everything felt stiff and sore, but my head felt like I had been hit over and over again.

The cat finally looked satisfied with whatever he thought he was doing, and jumped off me to walk out the door. The room was mostly dark, other than the moonlight coming in from behind me. I looked around the room. It was a modest bedroom that had minimal decorations.

How the hell did I get here?

I tried to remember what had happened, but my mind was foggy. The last thing I remembered was finally finding Soren after he disappeared for several hours, worried that he had been eaten by those stupid cats.

He looked to be in a daze because he had found what we had been looking for by accident. Oria. He had found the supplier or maybe the manufacturer, he was so excited and pumped up. Soren had also found something to create a portal and all we needed to do was get the Oria and get out of here. The downfall was, only one of us could use the necklace to get through the portal at a time.

We all tried holding hands, holding the necklace, but each time only one of us was allowed to go through. The necklace was only good for one of us.

We argued about it all night into the next morning, how we would go about it. While Soren didn't see anyone except a fucking hot-as-fuck woman—his words not mine—we were uncertain who else was in this secret tower. So, like any mission, we decided we needed more intel, and since Soren sucked at getting intel; they sent me in.

It seemed I had been caught and I was glad it was only me, but if I was the only one with the necklace, they couldn't get in. I didn't know how they were going to get me out. Taking a deep breath, I started cataloging everything because it seemed I only had myself to rely on.

My restraints were tight, and no matter how hard I tried to get out of them, they wouldn't budge. My legs were tied to each leg of the chairs, just as tight. My hunger was a little stronger than before I had ventured inside, either it had been days since I came in or the potion had heightened my hunger.

The sound of someone walking brought my attention back to the open door. I inhaled, trying to scent the person but all I could smell was sunshine and that fucking cat. I didn't know what sunshine smelled like, but this person smelled like it. Their scent was like warm spring days, with hints of flowers, grass and lemon.

The scent made me feel a calmness I had never felt before, but also anxiousness slowly invaded my system. Was it the woman my brother had encountered? If it was the woman he saw. I wanted to see her, no; I needed to see her. I don't know where the desperation came from but I was past caring.

"Hello?" I yelled out, thinking it sounded idiotic. "Anyone there?"

My eyesight was usually impeccable, but that stupid magical eraser had taken everything that made me supernatural and canceled it out. I felt human, loathing the feeling and wishing I had been more careful.

Another scent caught my nose and it was musky. Jealousy roared through me wondering if they were together. It was a stupid response to someone I had never met, but for some reason, from Soren's description, I felt like I had some kind of possessiveness of her.

Irritation clawed at me when I was met with nothing but silence. The cat strolled into the room again, circling the chair before sitting right in front of me. We stared at each other when his head tilted to the side and then the other side, which wasn't very cat-like.

"Dude, can you go find someone who will talk to me?" I asked, debating if I should mention the woman.

He stared at me, before walking around me again, but this time walked out of the room, without looking back. I heard footsteps outside the room as I strained my ears to hear something. I spent the rest of the night wondering where the hell I was and when I would see this beautiful woman.

"Fuck,"I growled.

A hiss sounded in the dark and that stupid cat scratched my face. I bared my teeth at the furry fucker as I tried to tear through my restraints getting tired of this little shithead.

I blinked a few times realizing that I had fallen asleep or they had put me to sleep again. Unease unfurled in my gut, wondering how much time had gone by.

"When are the others coming?" A voice cut through the darkness outside of the room.

I squinted trying to get a good look out of the room, but it was still too dark.

"Others?"

"Yes, others." The woman's voice snapped, making my body shiver from the sound. "How many men are coming? When will they arrive? Who told you about this location?"

I don't know if it was the pounding in my head or my lack of food, but I didn't understand what she was asking. Did she expect an army? Who the hell was she expecting?

"It's just me," I said.

"Liar," she said calmly. "Who would be stupid enough to come alone? Did you know she was leaving?"

"Who was leaving?"

My head pounded harder from squinting to get a glimpse of this woman who had a voice that made my body react in such a visceral way. This had to be the woman my twin talked about because it seemed like I was having the same reaction he had, except I hadn't even seen this woman. If this was her voice, I could only imagine what she looked like.

When she didn't respond I said, "Look I don't know who you are talking about, but I'm?—"

"Don't lie to me," she said, her voice wavering ever so slightly. "Tell me how many are coming."

"I'm alone and no one is coming," I said truthfully.

"I don't believe you," she said, annoyed. "Look, either you tell me how many are coming or I'll just kill you and wait for them, but it would help me out if you just told me the truth."

"I don't believe you'll kill me," I said immediately.

She laughed. "Just cause I'm a woman doesn't mean I won't chop your head off."

Her voice was too innocent to sound threatening, but I admired her tenacity. I wanted to see her fire.

"Well, if I was able to see you, I think I would be able to make a better decision," I said, aching to see her.

I was met with silence, until I could barely hear her whisper. There was someone else with her or maybe more than one person. Shit. If there were a group of people, we stood no chance, it wasn't just a quick in and out job like Soren had assumed. I needed to get away so we could come up with a plan and get the hell out before they did something stupid or worse, Soren and Ryder came in, guns blazing.

Fuck, Soren was going to be so worried if he wasn't already.

Please, don't do anything stupid.

More whispering continued before silence resumed. It seemed like I needed to keep my cards closer; I wouldn't speak until someone entered the room. Who were these people? Were they protecting their Oria stash or did they actually make it here?

All these questions surfaced as the morning light came through the window behind me. The sun gave the room a beautiful glow, but my eyes were trained on the wall in front of me. It seemed like I was in a room in a hallway. I spent the entire day watching and waiting, feeling the effects of the potion slowly wearing off.

Someone was moving around the house, cooking and doing various things without coming close to the room I was in. I was getting tired of waiting, my impatience making me angry until I noticed a piece of blonde hair and the side of a woman's face. It quickly disappeared when she noticed me looking at her.

"I don't bite," I said, trying to go for a more laid-back approach.

"Says the vampire," she said quickly.

I chuckled. "I always ask permission first."

She peeked around the door again. Her hair was so blonde it gave her a beautiful glow. I could see her eyes looking at me curiously and then that fucking cat came in the room again. He walked up to me, hissing before making a lap around me.

"Loki," she chastised.

He immediately walked to her, she bent down to pick him up, looking over at me. My breath caught when I finally saw all of her face. She definitely was the woman Soren had described. Her eyes looked to be hazel, but vibrant enough that they stood out against her fair skin and her golden hair. She was sumptuous, regal and everything I was not. I swallowed roughly, feeling like I was suspended in time, just admiring her, basking in her presence.

Her cheeks reddened before she walked away. My chest ached for her to come back, so I could be near her again, ask her questions and I could smell sunshine one more time. My mind raced with ways to get her back into the room when she walked right in with a glass of water and a plate with cheese and bread.

"I assume you only drink blood, but I didn't know if you also needed sustenance," she said, bringing the food to me.

She looked unsure with a hint of fear.

"I can eat, but it does nothing for my hunger," I said looking up at her studying the curve of her neck as her scent made my mouth water.

She wore leggings with an oversized sweater that hung off one shoulder, teasing me with her slender neck that made me want to sink my teeth into her.

"Oh, so no food or water then?" She held the plate close to me.

"No food or water," I said, wondering if she would offer herself as my meal, making my mouth water even more.

The need to taste her increased. Worry made me nervous when I realized if I was here long enough my thirst would take over and I would do something I would regret.

"Well, since I don't have a willing person to offer you their vein, you will just have to suffer," she said, walking and sitting on the bed.

"Shame, because I am a little thirsty," I said with a smirk.

Was I flirting?

She didn't smile back at me as she took a piece of bread and ate it, examining me like I was an animal at the zoo.

"Who sent you?" she asked, after eating for a few minutes.

"How many people are here with you?" I tried to appear calm.

"Does it matter?" she shrugged.

"I think it does." I looked outside of the room wondering who was listening to us. "I'm not here for any malicious reasons."

"Then what are you here for?" She stood up walking in front of me.

Her scent wafted around the room, making my body react to her with hunger and my cock started getting hard. Images of us doing oh so delicious things floated in my head, making me flex my arms in hopes of breaking free and touching her.

Mine.

"Oria is scarce, I need a vial for a friend or else she will die," I said, hoping the truth got me what I needed, and it wasn't just the Oria anymore.

Her jaw clenched.

"Is that all?" she snapped.

I knew my next words would make or break my situation.

"Yes, she is trapped in a spell, and this might be her only way to survive," I said, letting my emotions bleed into my tone.

Her expression grew fierce as she cut through my bullshit with one look. That wasn't the only reason we were looking for the Oria. If we could find the source, we would be the richest men around and the power we would gain would be immeasurable.

"That sounds like a shit lie." She leaned over me, with a hand resting on my shoulder. "You think that Oria is made here, well think again, because you just walked into nothing."

She gave me one last glare before she walked out of the room with the stupid grumpy cat.
