Epilogue
PIPER
I wiped my sweaty palms against my knees and watched Allie sit next to me.
“Hey.” She grinned at me.
“I think we need to talk.” She nodded.
“I think you’re right.”
“I met someone,” I blurted out, and she laughed.
“I know. Hugo. I’ve met him. Multiple times.” She laughed, but I couldn’t get myself to do the same. Hugo spent the night anytime I got us to come back to my place to get more stuff. But for the last two weeks, he would let me take things to his place but never bring anything back.
“I love him,” I whispered, and her eyes softened. And I did. Hugo was everything I was never brave enough to dream about in a partner. He was patient and kind. Sweet and funny.
“I know.” Her hand covered mine. I nodded, because she was my best friend for a reason. I exhaled choppily.
It was time.
Everything was changing. Mostly in a good way, but as I looked around the small cottage home we had been renting, tears prickled at my eyes. But then again, everything made me seriously emotional lately.
“I’m pregnant,” I announced. For the first time in a couple of weeks, I caught my best friend off guard. She stared at me like she was waiting for me to say just kidding or something. “I found out last night. I mean…” I wiped at the tears that started to roll down my face. “I’ve been really emotional, and I was late, but you know how I am so irregular.”
“Right.”
“I took a test a week ago, and yesterday, Hugo and I went to the doctor, where they confirmed it.”
“You’re pregnant,” she repeated. “My best friend is having a baby!” She giggled, and her own eyes turned watery, not that I got to see much because my vision blurred. We turned and hugged, crying and laughing with happiness at the news. I sniffled and pulled away. Wiping my face, I breathed in. “I am going to move out.” This earned me a whole-hearted laugh.
“I am, too.”
“You’re preg—“ She shook her head.
“No. Moving out. Winston wants to live together.”
“Wow,” I sighed happily. “Look at us,” I sniffled, “growing up and stuff.” I giggled, and she nodded.
“You know, no matter how much grown-up stuff we go through, this doesn’t change the fact you’re my best friend,” she whispered. My lips wobbled again.
“Same, babe.”
“Wow,” she sighed. Her eyes dropped my belly and back up to me. “You’re going to be the best mommy ever.” This made me snort.
“I’m going to be the weird mom.” I made a face, but Allie’s gaze simply softened as she shook her head.
“It’s okay. It builds character. That little sugar plum is going to be the luckiest kid ever.” She winked, and I laughed before I hugged my best friend again. A knock sounded at the front door, and when I turned, my heart squeezed in my chest at the sight of my big, beautiful biker.
“You guys okay?” he asked, and we giggled.
“Yeah.” Allie stood and walked over to hug my guy. “Congratulations, Hugo.”
“Thanks, Al.”
“Well, I am going to go call the landlord and tell him about us moving.” She waved bye and walked toward her room. My man didn’t wait for her to disappear before he moved toward me and pulled me into his arms.
“How’s my princess feeling?” Genuine concern laced through his gaze.
“Happy. Very, very happy,” I shared with a smile.
“Good.” He leaned in and kissed me. I had no idea how he did it, but every kiss felt like a first. And I couldn’t wait for a lifetime of them.
Who would have thought getting stranded with a biker at a craft fair would lead to my very own happy ever after!
