Chapter 4

CHAPTER FOUR

VYA

I shook, waiting for what would come next. Something had broken into my room. I was sure of it. I'd heard more than the boards breaking. I'd heard it step inside before it went quiet. And I was positive I'd felt it near me. But it hadn't touched me.

Yet.

A shudder rocked through me, and I thought of Mila. My tears fell harder. I didn't want to be raped. I remembered the smell of her blood and how she'd refused to stand when the next whistle had sounded. They'd shocked her and shocked her while I'd silently cried, knowing better than to make any move to stop them.

After endless weeks of enduring this hell together, she'd given up and left me alone.

I sniffled again and wished I could have followed her. I'd tried, but the things here had finally gotten smarter, alternating between beating me with a stick and using the collar.

Unsure what else to do, I reached for the bowl I knew was nearby. I drank because I knew my keepers expected me to. At least, I no longer saw the mashed-up mix of alien bugs I drank. With my eyes not working, I knew I had to be close to the end and kept praying that the next shock would be the last so I could finally be free of this nightmare.

If only they would go back to shocking me instead of beating me.

The collar around my throat made a noise. My pulse jumped in equal amounts of fear and hope. However, the device did not cause the usual searing pain. It fell away from my neck and splashed into my bowl.

A bubble of hysterical laughter escaped before I silenced myself and fished the collar out. Clutching the metal band, I set the bowl down and touched my neck. Since waking, that thing had been tormenting my raw skin.

Why had it fallen off?

I stood on shaky legs and listened.

Outside, I could hear those things making noise. Inside, though, I couldn't hear a sound. Maybe they'd come up with some new way to punish me. Maybe one was standing right next to me to see what I'd do.

The collar fell from my aching fingers.

Maybe I didn't care anymore. I only knew that I couldn't keep going like this.

Shuffling forward with my hands outstretched, I moved toward where I'd heard the boards break. Mila had said we were on a jungle world. She'd peeked through the boards on our second day here and had watched the plants grab the ugly creatures. Maybe I'd make it to the plants, and they'd grab me too.

I just wanted this hell to end.

Something touched the back of my head.

I froze, shuddering at the contact. Fresh tears welled and spilled over. I'd known the danger of hope. Yet, I'd grabbed it regardless.

The touch on the back of my head vanished. I listened for a whisper of sound to indicate what would come next but heard nothing. No clacking of shells. No beep of a door opening. Simply endless silence.

"Just kill me already," I whispered, closing my useless eyes in defeat.

The low growl made me jump, and I jerked away from the light touch to my face that followed.

The thing then placed its hand on my back. I shivered at the touch, and my heart hammered in fear. The need to run burned my useless eyes with a fresh wash of tears. I could feel the thing move closer to me. The touch behind my knees brought out a sob.

A moment later, I was up in its arms and realized several things. Whatever had me now wasn't what I'd been washing and jacking off this past month. This creature was bigger. A lot bigger. And it didn't have a hard shell outside. He was still hard, but it felt like muscle beneath some kind of material.

Before I could decide if wearing clothes was a sign of intelligence or not, fresh air touched my face for the first time in weeks. I inhaled greedily, and my heart stuttered as I understood what this meant. The thing had broken into my room, removed my collar, and was carrying me outside through the hole it had ripped into the back of the building.

It was stealing me.

Why? What did it plan to do? In my heart, I already knew the answer to both these questions.

The news back home had said that hundreds of species co-existed in space. And that they were all desperate for females. News anchors had painted a picture of happy women in space, being pampered and catered to in exchange for growing alien babies. They'd forgotten to mention a few key things. Like the definition of pampering, which included shock therapy until blind, starvation, and becoming a sex slave.

So, apparently, it was time for me to change ownership.

Different didn't mean better. I knew that and turned my head toward my new captor, trying to discern eyes, ears, nose...anything that might indicate what had me now. The kaleidoscope of shadows and light stayed the same, no matter where I looked, though. Too many shocks and too much damage.

The thing carrying me jumped suddenly. The stomach-churning motion elicited a gasp from me, which the creature responded to with another growl.

I immediately stifled any sounds of fear. Maybe if I kept quiet and was obedient, I wouldn't have to wear another collar. I held onto that hopeful thought, ignoring the darker, scarier one—that this alien meant to rape me like Mila had been raped.

The thing set me down, and I heard a rustle of noise beside me, barely discernible over the familiar, distant rattling. Discreetly spreading out my fingers, I touched the surface underneath me. Although he'd jumped up with me, it felt like I was sitting on packed dirt mixed with dead grass.

My exploration ended abruptly when the thing took my hand and shoved it into warm fabric. I tensed but didn't fight him as he threaded it into the material then took my other arm to do the same. A weight settled over my back. He'd dressed me in something that didn't smell the best.

When it grabbed my foot, my first impulse was to jerk free. Realizing what I'd done, I immediately went loose. Resisting only made the punishments worse.

In short order, I found myself dressed in oversized clothes that were stifling for the climate and more rank than what I'd been wearing for a month. Sweating and shaking, I held still and wondered what would happen next.

Something covered my head. No matter how much I told myself to hold still, to accept whatever it did so it wouldn't do worse, I couldn't. The moment the cloth reached my mouth, I reached up to yank it away.

My new captor caught my hands with its own. They were warm and felt human-ish, except for the size. Whatever had me now was huge.

Surprise paused my frantic movements for only a moment. Long enough for it to growl at me again. It shifted its hold on my hands and tugged on the cloth so it wasn't as tight over my mouth.

It clapped its overly large hand on my shoulder, and I stumbled a step from the force of it. It quickly released my captive hands to steady me. Confused and breathing through the aches the movement had caused, I waited for what would come next.

A hand settled on my back again, and a second later, I was tossed over its shoulder. The pressure in my head made my eyes ache. I closed them and endured the stomach-bruising landing after it jumped again.

I didn't understand what was happening. Fear blanketed me.

Head hanging and stomach aching, I tried to be the most obedient captive ever. Maybe this one wouldn't shock me as much and would feed me something other than bugs. Maybe whatever had me would be nice.

Fresh tears fell.

Live or die, I needed to accept that I was just along for the ride.
