4. Chapter 3

We climbed into the waiting helicopter, where I carefully put Blanche in a seat. Simone, my pilot, lifted us up into the air right away, but I didn't pay it any mind, fully focused on Blanche. Panic overcame me the moment her eyes rolled back into her head, and her body turned limp. Carefully, at first, I shook her. "Blanche!" When she didn't react, I shook her harder

No, I couldn't lose her now.

Her skin was so cold. I noticed it earlier, but now it seemed like an ice chest. Right in front of my eyes her skin began to brittle. "No!"

"She needs blood," Vasili stated dryly, staring at me in a funny way.

Blood?

Vampire!

Of course, they had turned her into a vampire; that's what Roger had been. I had known it when I first laid eyes on her. I just hadn't been able to admit the truth to myself.

Mechanically, I took the knife Vasili offered and cut my wrist, holding it just so that a few drops landed on her pale lips. Within seconds, her eyes sprang open, not green anymore but deep red. Her lips parted, and her hands moved up to grab my arm in a vise-like grip, pulling it to her lips. I felt her fangs push against my flesh and closed my eyes as deep agony reared through me. Blanche, what have they done to you ?

Whoever had done this would pay, I swore. My innocent Blanche had never done a bad deed in her life. She was warm, giving, and sweet.

She began to suck on my wrist and a groan escaped me as my cock responded. Oh fuck, this was the most arousing thing in my several thousand-year-old life that had ever happened to me.

Vasili turned his head with a sneer and an expression of disgust. Vampires were not revered in hell. They were scum. Neither beast nor man. No self-respecting demon would ever associate with them.

Had I not been so aroused, I would have laughed. Look at me now, Father. Your perfect, favorite son in love with a vampire. How fucking ironic was that?

Blanche's eyes changed back to the familiar green; her skintone soon returned to a healthy pinkish glow.

When she was done, I licked my wound to seal it and arranged her carefully on my lap and in my arms. Vampires didn't sleep, but her exhausted mind must have sought refuge in a trance-like state to process what had happened to her—what was still happening to her. Leaving me to admire her long, swan-like neck.

Something glittered by the hollow of her throat: A diamond, that hung from a golden necklace. My Blanche would have never worn something as ostentatious as this. As I scrutinized it closer, I noticed the intricacy of how it had been made, this necklace was from now, our time in the twentieth century not from when I last saw Blanche, in the year 1595.

"Will you tell me now why in the hell we've risked our lives for a bloodsucker?" Vasili leaned back in his chair, ready for storytime and stopping my train of thought. It left enough time for me to wonder, though, if that necklace was some kind of tracking device that had led Roger to where she was trying to hide in my club.

Vasili had been my friend for over four hundred years, but he only knew the Devon after. The brooding Devon, who took what he wanted and worked hard to build an empire to become as powerful on Earth as his father was in hell.

"She wasn't a vampire the last time I saw her," I explained between clenched teeth. "I'll find who did this to her and why and rip their fucking heart out. I will make them eat it before they die."

An eyebrow arched on Vasili's stony face. He had served my father for thousands of years and had sworn his allegiance to him. But we had been together through thick and thin; he was my friend. I supposed I would soon find out who held his true loyalty. I didn't relish the idea of having to kill him, but I would. For her. I would kill anybody for her.

"You loved her?" Vasili concluded.

"I love her," I corrected, turning my gaze to the sleeping beauty in my arms. No matter what had been done to her, I would always love her. The one pure thing in my life.

Vasili broke out into loud laughter and slapped his knee. "That's hilarious. You almost had me there."

"I think he's serious," Cantor threw in, another of my closer bodyguards and friends. That sobered Vasili. "Your father is not gonna be happy about that."

"I suppose not," I allowed, willingly omitting what an understatement it was. My father had come close to killing me once before because of her. If he found out she was back…

I met the eyes of the men who had been my guards and friends for the past few hundred years. All five of us had fought and bled for one another. With their help, I had built an empire on Earth. All four men were wealthy beyond belief. None of them had to work for me, yet they stayed.

"This will be dangerous," I warned. "I do not expect you to risk your necks for me—"

"Dangerous?" Faro piped up. "Oh thank fuck! I was close to quitting you because I was getting bored. Who are we gonna fight?"

"The Devil himself," Vasili retorted, staring me straight in the eyes, daring me to contradict him.

"My father won't be pleased. Plus, I'm not sure what hornet's nest I poked when I rescued Blanche. At the very least, we'll have to deal with her father, who I strongly suspect to be a vampire also," I confirmed. "You have been loyal to me for many years, but I cannot—"

Again, Faro interrupted me. "Fighting two enemies at once? Hell yeah!"

"Through thick and thin." Cantor met my eyes.

"All for one and one for all," Brock mocked, holding his hand out. Faro put his on top, followed by Cantor. Mildly touched, as much as the devil's son could be, I added mine.

"Oh, for fuck's sake." Vasili's large hand landed on our pile, and he grinned. "Faro is right. It was getting boring."
