24. Epilogue: Betsy

Epilogue – Betsy

O ne year later…

"How was work today?"

Kelly leaned down and gave me a kiss on the forehead before dropping onto the porch swing next to me. I reached over to the table and handed her a mint julep. I'd gotten in the habit this summer of waiting for her on the porch after work with a cocktail. Now we were joking that I was her tradwife. At least until school started and I had to go back to work.

"It was good. No one's parents yelled at me about how unfair their financial aid package was today."

Kelly had gotten a job in the financial aid department at the University of Texas a few weeks after she moved in with me, and she mostly loved her job. It paid well, it had good benefits, and she had a great boss who was grooming her to be her successor in five years when she retired.

To both of our surprise and relief, we'd adjusted to living together with very few hiccups. We still argued about my shoes on the floor and her incessant need to tidy, but other than that we were mostly compatible. We played on our strengths. I did the cooking and grocery shopping and took care of the outdoors while Kelly did most of the house cleaning. It worked for us.

My family took to Kelly right away, and although she'd been a little standoffish at first, unsure what to make of their exuberant affection, they'd gradually worn her down. She no longer froze when my mom pulled her into a hug, and my brother teased her the same way he did me.

We were both really happy. Happy enough that I was hoping we could make it official.

"I got you a cupcake from your favorite place," I said, picking up the box from the table next to me.

"Oh great, I'll have it for dessert," Kelly said. "Thank you."

"Maybe you can take a taste of it now," I insisted, handing her the box.

She gave me a look like I was being weird. "Um, okay, maybe a bite."

I watched as she lifted the lid, her eyes widening as she saw the engagement ring I'd perched on top of the frosting of her red velvet cupcake.

"Is this…?" Her eyes looked the tiniest bit shiny as she looked between me and the ring.

"Will you marry me, Kelly?"

She carefully lifted the ring off the cupcake, admiring it in the light before slipping it on her finger. It fit perfectly, just like I knew it would when I stole one of her rings and took it with me to the jeweler.

"Well?" I asked impatiently.

She rolled her eyes. "Always so impatient."

She set the cupcake box down carefully on the table on her side, then turned to grab both of my hands.

"Yes, I'll marry you Betsy, one on condition."

"What is it?"

"Let's honeymoon in Paris."

"You got it."
