Chapter 41

Chapter

Forty-One

"If you have two friends in your lifetime, you're lucky. If you have one good friend, you're more than lucky."

― S.E. Hinton

Alexsei

I pulled Caia closer, my arm tight around her waist, as my phone rang for the third time in a row. With a low growl, I ignored it again, only for it to buzz like a persistent fly.

"Answer that," Caia mumbled, half asleep. "It's ruining my beauty sleep."

I chuckled, kissed her on the head, then slid out of bed, moving to the living room, shutting the door quietly behind me so I wouldn't wake her or our son.

"It better be fucking important, or I'll send someone to put a bullet between your eyes when I hang up," I hissed into the phone as I sank onto the couch.

On the other end, Angelo's laughter crackled through. "Ah, Romaniev. Always the charmer."

"Make it quick," I snapped, leaning back, already annoyed.

Angelo sighed dramatically. "Ah, how lovely of you to ask how I'm doing, stronzo ."

I ignored his sarcasm, stepping out onto the balcony, the night air cool against my skin. I lit a cigarette, making sure the smoke stayed far from the room.

Angelo Lazzio embodied every fucking Italian Don stereotype: billionaire, playboy, CEO of one of the largest art companies in the States. His penthouse overlooking Central Park was valued at over $35 million. He owned restaurants scattered across Paris, NYC, Tokyo, and Cape Town. The works. We'd met a couple of years ago, thanks to his father, who was tight with Igor.

"Let me guess," I exhaled a cloud of smoke. "You lost your dog again and need me, from halfway across the world, to find it."

"Leave Giorgio out of this," Angelo growled. "My poor baby got an eye infection; just got back from the vet."

I smirked. Giorgio, his fluffy Pomeranian, was the closest thing Angelo had to any form of commitment. No woman could keep him tied down, so he opted for a dog.

Taking another drag, I sighed. "So, what's this really about?"

"Remember that little favor you owe me? Well, it's time to pay up."

I let out a low grunt. A couple of years back, after a run from Colombia, Angelo had invited me to dinner at one of his overpriced restaurants in NYC. The night spiraled into chaos when we hit up one of his father's clubs in Brooklyn. Some lowlife thugs didn't like seeing a Silas on "their turf."

Assholes.

Before I could react, I had a gun to my head. Angelo cracked the guy's skull before he even had time to pull the trigger. I'd told him I owed him one—though it was more out of jest than anything. But Angelo had a long memory, and clearly, he wasn't joking.

"Spit it out, Lazzio."

"I need you in NYC. ASAP."

I raised an eyebrow, my instincts flaring. Angelo never called for anything trivial, and if he was serious, it was worth my attention.

"I'll be there tomorrow," I said, stubbing out the cigarette and cutting the call.

When will you be back?" Caia asked softly, still in her pajamas—one of my t-shirts that hung to mid-thigh, her panties barely visible, hair braided, and her eyes heavy with sleep. I hated breaking the news that I had to leave, and she wasn't happy about it—neither was I.

"In two days," I replied.

She sighed, her lips forming a small pout. "That's too long."

I scooped up our son, hugging him tight and smothering his chubby cheeks with kisses as his tiny fingers gripped my face.

"Be good for mummy while I'm away, okay?" I smiled, tickling his little toes.

Fuckin' hell. I'm going to miss them.

Setting him back down in his bed, I handed him his lightning bolt toy, the one that played soft music. Turning back to Caia, I pulled her closer by the hand and wrapped my arms around her waist. "I know, moya solnyshka ," I murmured, holding her tight. "I'll make it quick, I promise."

Her arms crossed, her pout deepening as disappointment flickered across her face. I leaned in, brushing her lips gently with mine before playfully tickling her sides. She tried to resist, but the laughter escaped her, and her arms uncrossed as she wrapped them around my neck, pulling me into a deeper kiss.

Caia nodded reluctantly. "Okay."

I pressed my lips to her forehead. "I'll call you whenever I can."

Letting her go, I grabbed my bag and jacket. "I asked Dve to come by and drive you around if you need anything."

Her eyes widened in alarm. "NO! Not Dve!"

I turned to her, my brows furrowed. "What's wrong with Dve?"

She shifted uncomfortably, scratching her arm and blinking rapidly. "I don't want to see him," she muttered.

"Why?" My mind immediately went dark—what the fuck had he done or said to her?

She shook her head, waving me off. "Forget it."

"Tell me," I demanded, my frustration rising.

"It's nothing?—"

"Caia, tell me.".

If he did something to her, I'm going to fucking kill him.

She bit her lip before sighing. "Okay…" She sat back on the bed, hugging a pillow, looking sheepish. "Don't tell anyone I said this, but… he's dating Valeria."

I stayed silent; my amusement barely hidden behind a neutral expression. Caia gasped, throwing the pillow at me, which I caught before it hit my face, unable to hold back a laugh.

"You knew?!" she exclaimed, standing up angrily. "And you didn't tell me?"

Still chuckling, I moved toward the door, slipping on my shoes. "Caia, I don't give a damn who Dve fucks; that's his business, not mine."

She picked up our son and placed him in his playpen in the living room, her footsteps quick and annoyed as she followed me barefoot to the entrance.

"Stop saying that!" she snapped.

"Saying what?" I glanced back at her, amused.

"You know what!" Her emerald eyes darkened with irritation, something I found irresistible. "They're dating, not just…" Her face twisted in disgust. "Anyway, I don't want to see him. I'll walk, or I'll take one of your cars. I don't need him."

I shook my head, smirking at her embarrassment.

"When people date , they usually fuck , baby," I teased, grabbing her hips and dropping my head to kiss her neck. "Just like we do." I nipped at her skin and squeezed her ass. "And when I get back, I'm gonna fuck you all night long?—"

"Alexsei!" She shoved me away, her cheeks flushing pink.

"Alright, alright." I raised my hands in surrender, grinning. "I'll bring you and Lukyan a nice souvenir."

Her expression softened. "Good. Have a safe trip."

I leaned in for one last kiss, frustrated as hell about leaving them behind to deal with Lazzio and his rat-infested city.
