Chapter Five

CAIRO

Isobered up last night so I could assist Nico with the heist. Nothing beats the thrill of taking from a rival Baltimore mafia family, especially when they had the audacity to bring their goods into Delaware to sell. Pure disrespect. If they want them back, they'll have to go through Nico and me.

Dad's been preparing me for this throne for years, and when we met this morning, he just wanted to make sure I was focused. He tried to read my expression when he brought up Baylor’s Christmas Eve wedding, hoping to see me crack.

I almost did.

“Mom thinks she’s getting a new Bentley SUV for Christmas. Is she?”

I deflected, knowing it would look suspicious. Dad expected me to lose my cool, but I wouldn't give him the satisfaction.

I glance around the room at the worn books on the elegant mahogany shelves. A black bear fur rug lies in front of a green leather sofa, adding a touch of luxury to the space.

I hadn't been invited to the Sandro home outside of their annual Christmas parties. The last time I was here, I paid one of the guards to let me sneak into Baylor's window. I fucked her sweet pussy right under her daddy’s roof. That's what happens when a man can't resist his woman.

A loud clap sounds behind me, breaking me from my thoughts. I glance over my shoulder.

“You’re the new Baccaro boss. So you decide to pay me a visit, huh?”

Carlos asks and I rise to my feet, approaching him.

We shake hands, and I kiss both his cheeks. “Something like that,”

I reply, taking note of how much older he looks since the party two weeks ago. The bags under his eyes tell me he hasn't been sleeping well.

Carlos moves around his desk, and I sink back into the seat opposite him. He runs a hand through his salt-and-pepper hair. “Would you like a cigar?”

“No,” I reply.

He releases a breath and pinches the bridge of his nose. “Is this about my daughter?”

I ignore his question momentarily. "Silas wants control over your half of Delaware City. The territory our families share. That doesn’t strike you as odd?”

He walks over to the bar. “Cairo, I’m surprised you’re not more upset that he’s marrying Baylor on Christmas Eve.”

It appears Dad and Carlos want to see me lose my mind again.

“Carlos, he can’t have any part of Delaware City. Give him Middleton.”

He returns with two glasses of Scotch. I take one from his hand.

“Cairo, he wasn’t interested in Middleton.”

I gulp the Scotch and welcome the burn. “I’ve never known you to give up a part of your territory. What happened?”

Carlos takes a sip of his drink, leaning back as he stares at the ceiling. “I made a serious error on a weapons deal with Silas. It’s a mistake I’ve never made before.”

He exhales heavily, his frustration clear. “After that, Silas showed up here, making demands. I’ve always been meticulous, but one of my men confirmed the mistake.”

I pluck a cigar from the box, mulling over his words.

"First, if you think I’ll let Silas marry Baylor…”

I chuckle, letting the threat linger in my voice, “…you’ve lost your mind.” My blue eyes darken.

“She was mine eight years ago, and she’s still mine. Neither you nor my father could make me give her up. You would’ve had to kill me.”

Carlos rubs his brow in frustration. “Cairo, if that’s what it takes.”

After clipping the tip of the cigar, I pick up the lighter and ignite the end as I take a puff.

The platinum band on my left-hand glimmers under the light as I balance the cigar between two fingers.

Carlos stands up, fists clenched on his desk, scowling at me. "Is that what you want? To be taken out right here, right now on your first day as a mafia boss?"

“So, you’d try to kill your daughter’s husband?”

I ask, a devilish grin spreading across my face.

“Cairo!”

he roars, his voice tight with agitation.

“Carlos, I’m in a generous mood. With the support of the four New Jersey mafia families, we’re going to help you out of this predicament. One thing I can say about you Carlos, your attention to detail is impeccable. Dad has always said that about you.”

I point my cigar at him, a smirk playing on my lips. “Relax, Carlos. Let’s go over the plan.”

Carlos sinks into his plush office chair, the anger in his eyes cooling just a bit. “You stole my daughter’s hand in marriage.”

“I wouldn’t have had to if you and my father had kept your love-hate dynamic to yourselves instead of dragging Baylor and me into it.”

I lean back, smoke curling in the air between us. “Now, let’s get down to business.”
