Chapter Eight

Paine had never dressed up in his life. He had gone from being a street rat to hostage to fucked to fucked up, with no stops in between. The way Charon stared down at him, wearing a little smile, was the only reason he stood still and didn’t tug at his clothes while Charon tied his bow tie for him. It felt strange without his collar.

Charon’s smile grew. “You look miserable.”

Paine forced his features into a different expression.

A sexy laugh rumbled from Charon’s chest. “You don’t have to fake it. I know this isn’t your comfort zone.”

It wasn’t, but Paine didn’t want to ruin anything for Charon. “I’ve never been to a fancy antique show. It sounds like something filled with people I won’t like.”

Charon finished with Paine’s tie and then stared at him like a proud parent. “There. Perfect, just like you.”

Paine snorted.

“Do you like me?” Charon asked, sounding pragmatic.

“Sometimes.”

Charon laughed again. “Then you’ll sometimes like these people too. But we’re not going for the people. If I intend to run my business from here for a while, then I need to rub elbows.” He leaned closer, lowering his voice and sounding evil. “I need them to see my ruthlessness. It’s important the other dealers know I always get what I want.”

He stole Paine’s breath. Charon looked so wicked. “What do you want?” The question came out in a whisper. Paine didn’t know if he should promise to be good or scramble for the rafters. Charon could be scary. He needed to hear Charon’s terrifying tone wasn’t meant for him.

Charon’s face softened. “To give you everything.”

Paine blinked. He hadn’t expected that response. “I don’t want things.”

Charon snagged his waist and hauled Paine against him. “Everything isn’t always monetary. Tell me what you want. It’s yours.”

The demand nearly sent Paine into an existential crisis. No one had ever asked him that. He had never considered what he yearned for more than anything. Before he had time to break down from the overload, peace settled over him. Paine knew exactly what he wanted and needed from his life. “I want to really be your husband.”

Charon lowered his head and brushed his lips across Paine’s. The air in the room changed. Charon sucked his bottom lip, making Paine’s knees weak. He stroked Paine’s back like he treasured Paine. Paine lost himself as Charon’s tongue swiped his. He wondered if Charon kept him upright. Paine couldn’t feel his legs. By the time Charon pulled away, Paine couldn’t open his eyes. Charon had stolen him. Paine slowly opened his eyes to find Charon staring at him with so much hunger, Paine stopped breathing.

“Fuck. You’re beautiful.” Charon meant it. The truth was in his eyes and voice.

“I love you.” Paine heard himself even though he didn’t remember speaking. It was as if Paine’s heart had bypassed his brain and spoke for him. Honestly, that was probably for the best, considering his mind.

A sexy smile touched Charon’s lips. “I love you too. Let’s do it.”

Since Charon had wiped his mind with that kiss, Paine had no idea what Charon meant. “What?”

Charon’s smile grew. “We’re already dressed for the occasion. Let’s get married.”

“Okay.” God, Paine hoped he didn’t destroy Charon’s life. Charon had been staying with him for two weeks and Paine couldn’t always tolerate sleeping outside his suspended bed. On those nights, Charon always joined him wherever he slept. Unfortunately, they hadn’t made love again. He couldn’t decide if Charon waited for him to make a move or if his fucked-up brain was a huge turnoff. Most likely, it was the latter.

While he stood in place, lost in his head, Charon made calls. He had no idea how long he zoned out, hiding inside himself where his emotions were safe. Paine finally realized Charon stared at him, waiting for some response.

Paine blinked. “What?”

“I have everything set for us. Are you ready to go?”

His breathing kicked up until Paine struggled for air. “I don’t want to ruin your life. You don’t want me. My mind scares me. I can’t imagine how you feel. You’ll be married to someone you obviously don’t even feel comfortable making love to,” Paine said. His voice sounded more panicked by the second. “You feel like I’m a mental patient who can’t even consent, so you can’t touch me.”

Charon looked completely calm. The distance between them disappeared. In a flash, Paine went flying, landing on the bed. Charon’s huge body covered his before he had time to recover. His mouth came down hard on Paine’s. The expensive clothing Charon had worked so hard to spruce up ripped away from him. Charon kissed and bit until they were nude. Paine couldn’t think. He loved it. Charon stole the crazy and replaced it with lust.

His skin was ablaze. Paine couldn’t stop touching Charon every place he could reach. God, he missed every inch of Charon. He never got enough of simply touching him. It was like Charon had burrowed under his skin all those years ago and set up shop inside him. There was literally nothing Charon could do to lose Paine. Paine loved him beyond all wrongs and beyond one lifetime.

Charon dove for the bedside table. “Tell me I don’t want you. I’ve been ready and waiting for you to tell me what you need.” He came back with lube, proving he had been prepared and waiting.

Paine didn’t have time to pat him on the back for thinking ahead. Charon’s lubed fingers were in his ass. He focused on the pleasure while fighting his mind. Paine didn’t want to go to an ugly place. They never made love this way. Everything about their lives back then had revolved around pain. They only wanted beauty between them. But Paine had wanted Charon exactly like this. He wouldn’t let their pasts ruin the moment. Then Charon was inside him and another immense feeling stole his breath. Tears pricked his eyes. They were connected. Time slowed. They held each other’s stare as they moved together.

“I am marrying you today.”

Paine nodded. “I know.”

“Do you?”

“I do.”

Charon kissed him. “You’ll say that again later too,” Charon growled between kisses.

It was the last coherent thing either of them said. They felt too good together. Paine couldn’t focus on anything less.

Charon hadn’t meant to snap the way he had. Paine had openly regressed, falling into a full-blown panic attack. He knew if he didn’t do something, Paine would dart for the ceiling. Charon had what he needed.

He hadn’t expected the way his heart would react to being inside Paine. The love he thought couldn’t get any bigger grew by the second. He wondered if his heart would explode. Charon definitely fought another part of him from blowing. Paine felt amazing on his dick. Charon was on the verge of disappointing him.

“Fuck. I love you.” Pressure beat at his crown. He licked Paine’s nipple. “If you don’t come for me soon, I’ll beat you there.”

Paine pushed at his chest until Charon rolled to his back. Then Paine straddled him and took what he wanted. All Charon could do was grip the headboard and hang on while Paine used him. He was mesmerized by the sight of Paine bouncing on his dick. A sheen of sweat coated his olive skin. His body tensed and rolled while his cock bounced. While Charon was blond all over, chest hair and all, Paine was dark. They looked beautiful together. The vision burned a hole in his brain. Paine threw his head back and sucked air. Charon held his breath. Cum hit his chest while Paine made adorable whimpering noises. The way his body tried sucking Charon deeper sent him flying. He cried out while Paine stole his soul. His body shuddered with ecstasy. He wanted the moment to last for eternity.

Paine collapsed on his chest, panting with his face buried. Charon wrapped his arms around him while his dick twitched inside Paine’s ass.

“A tisket. A tasket. I’m suing Charon for sexual harassment.” The singsong words were muffled against his chest.

Charon’s entire body shook with laughter. He had to remind Paine of the obvious. “You’re my husband. That’s like suing yourself.”

Paine lifted his head. His eyes shone bright with happiness. “I love you. I’m ready to get married now.”

A bright smile had Charon’s cheeks hurting. “I think I ruined our nice clothes.”

Paine scrambled away and onto his knees. He bounced, looking like an excited child. “Can I get married in my kitty jammies, then?”

God, his heart. “If that’s what makes you happy.”

Paine turned serious. “You should wear that leather outfit you wear when riding your motorcycle.”

“That outfit is in New York.”

Paine’s shoulders fell before he immediately perked up again. “Then you should wear that purple t-shirt and those jeans you bought yesterday. You look extra yummy in that too. And then you can wear the leather outfit for me when we go to bed tonight.”

Dread rose in Charon’s chest. He didn’t want to think Paine had lost thoughts again, but it seemed as if he had already forgotten what Charon had just said. “That outfit is in New York, baby,” Charon reminded him.

He looked confused, deepening Charon’s fears. “I know, but that’s where our home is, right? Don’t husbands live together?”

Relief and happiness poured through Charon. He tried to be realistic, though. Charon didn’t want to get his hopes too high. “That’s where one of our homes is, but are you ready to go there? I don’t have your hideaway there.”

Paine nodded, looking thoughtful. When he spoke, his voice came out sounding soft and trusting. “But you’ll keep me safe, right?”

“You’re pretty fucking deadly without me, but of course I will. I’ll never let anything happen to you again. That’s a vow.”

“Then I vow the same to you. Nothing bad will ever happen to you as long as I live.”

“You should probably seal that with a kiss.”

Paine slowly lowered his head until their lips met. It was the sweetest kiss, filled with promise. Charon knew then everything between them would always be good. They had survived the worst. Life might have broken them individually, but not together. Together, they were made of steel. They would always find their way.
