Chapter 66
CHAPTER 66
O h, God…
Logan moved to catch Jill when her legs give out, dropping her to the floor, only to go still when Elizabeth reached down and wrapped her hand around the handle.
“I’m only going to say this once,” Elizabeth bit out as cold blue eyes met his. “Get Kale now .”
Swallowing hard, Logan glanced from the knife sticking out of Jill’s chest to her face and-
She wasn’t breathing.
“Mommy?” Emma mumbled around a sob.
“Do you really want to find out what happens when I pull this knife out?” Elizabeth asked with a pitying look.
“You’re dead,” Chris bit out coldly as he picked Emma up while Logan stood there feeling…
Absolutely-fucking numb.
“You either call Kale or I’m taking that little girl with me,” Elizabeth said with a pointed look at Emma.
“You’re not touching my child again,” Logan said as his gaze sharpened and his fangs ripped through his gums while he stood there, staring helplessly down at his angel as he felt the wound on his back from the stake rapidly heal, letting him know that the connection was gone.
“Then, you’d better call Kale,” Elizabeth said as Logan slowly looked up and found himself staring into a pair of bright red eyes as he watched Kale, who’d somehow managed to take them all by surprise, lean down behind Elizabeth and-
“I’m right here,” came the softly whispered words that had Elizabeth going still as Kale wrapped his hand around hers. He-
“Jesus Christ,” Kale whispered hoarsely when he realized that it was Elizabeth. Logan watched the shifter’s expression go from disbelief to pure rage in a matter of seconds.
“Close your eyes, mīn smael,” Logan said as the sounds of the bones in Elizabeth’s hand breaking echoed throughout the large foyer only to be drowned out by her screams. As soon as she released her hold on the knife, Logan was by Jill’s side, placing his hands on her chest to stop the bleeding.
Kale forced her to her feet and away from Jill.
“Angel…” Logan whispered hoarsely as he reached over and ran blood-stained fingertips along her jaw as his gaze shifted from her pink lips as they took on a blue tint to her chest and-
This wasn’t fucking happening.
Not now.
“Jill?” Chris said hoarsely as he dropped to his knees next to him and placed Emma down on her feet before he reached over and wrapped his trembling hand around hers.
“What do you want to do with her?” came the question that had Logan looking up to find Kale holding Elizabeth by the back of her neck.
“Logan, please!” Elizabeth begged, tears rolling down her face as her beautiful blue eyes pleaded with him, taking him back to that moment in the alley when he would have given anything to save her.
Over the years, he’d thought of all the things that he should have done, the things that he should have said, and of all the things that he would have happily given up for another moment just to be with her and now…
“Tear her fucking throat out,” Logan said, focusing back on his angel as Kale dragged Elizabeth out of the room.
“No!” Elizabeth screamed as Logan raised his arm and bit into his wrist.
“What the hell are you doing? Your blood will kill her!” Chris said, moving to stop Logan when he moved to press his wrist against Jill’s lips.
“Saving her,” Logan said, placing his wrist against her lips. “Come on, Angel,” he whispered, gently caressing her cheek as he waited for her to swallow his blood only to feel his stomach drop when his blood spilled over her lips and ran down her face seconds later.
“Dad?” Shane said, drawing his attention to find his son stumbling towards them, his terrified gaze locked on Jill as Logan ran his eyes over him, taking in everything from his sweat-slicked hair matted against his head to his pale complexion and the grey sweatpants hanging off his hips and wondered just how much fucking pain he was in from being forced to shift back that quickly during his first shift.
“What’s wrong with Mommy?” Caleb mumbled sadly as Kale walked back into the foyer behind him, making Logan swallow hard as he glanced past Caleb and-
“He left as soon as his mating mark disappeared,” Shane said, letting him know that Elizabeth was really dead this time.
“I can’t make out her scent over yours,” Kale said, frowning as he knelt down on the floor next to Shane. “What is she?”
“My mate,” Logan said, watching as more blood ran down her face.
“Mommy?” Emma mumbled sadly as she knelt down next to him and, after a slight hesitation, she reached over and gently shook Jill’s arm.
“Dad, do something,” Shane said, taking Jill’s hand in his and gave it a gentle squeeze as he reached over and brushed her damp hair out of her face while Logan gently wiped the blood running down her face away.
“Mommy, wake up,” Caleb mumbled sadly around a sniffle as he placed his small hands on Jill’s shoulder and shook her.
“Do something!” Shane screamed when Jill didn’t respond while Logan knelt there, trying not to fucking panic.
He couldn’t lose her.
“Angel,” Logan said as his gaze landed on the knife sticking out of her chest and-
“She should have turned to ash the moment the knife pierced her heart,” Logan said as he looked up and met Kale’s curious gaze.
“Yes, she should have,” Kale said as his gaze flickered to Chris.
Without a word, Chris reached inside his vest and pulled out a small metallic tube and a syringe. “How do you want to do this?” Chris asked as he made quick work of ripping open the package for the syringe.
“It’s in her heart,” Kale said, reaching over to gently move Jill’s damp shirt away from the blade. “We’re gonna have to go deep.”
“What’s that?” Shane asked when Chris opened the tube as the scent of blood reached Logan. Knowing that Chris would never do anything to hurt Jill, Logan focused back on his angel.
“Something that’s going to help your mother,” Chris said as his gaze flickered to Shane. “What’s your name?”
“Shane,” he said hollowly as he frantically wiped away the tears running down his face.
“Shane, I’m going to need you to grab your little brother and sister and bring them to that room behind me,” Chris said as he placed the syringe in the metallic tube and drew out blood.
“I’m not leaving her,” Shane said, shaking his head stubbornly.
“You don’t want them to see this,” Chris said with a pointed look at Caleb.
Frantically shaking his head, Shane opened his mouth only to close it when Logan said, “Take them into the living room and close the door.”
Swallowing hard, Shane reluctantly nodded as he reached over and took Caleb’s small hand in his. “I don’t wanna go, Daddy,” Caleb mumbled as his terrified gaze met his.
“Everything’s going to be fine, mīn swēte sunu,” Logan said as he reached over and picked Emma up, kissing her forehead before he placed her on her feet. “Go with your brothers, mīn smael.”
As soon as the door closed behind them, Kale was wrapping his hand around the knife handle as Logan leaned down and kissed Jill’s forehead. “Come back to me, Angel.”
“Ready?” Chris asked as he angled the syringe just below her rib cage and pushed the needle through her skin. He watched the Sentinel slowly push the blood into her heart as Kale pulled the knife free and tossed it aside.
“Come on, Jill,” Chris said, picking up the metallic vile and poured several drops onto the wound before placing the vile at her lips and poured the rest into her mouth.
As soon as the last drop hit her lips, Logan was reaching for her. He pulled her into his arms as he leaned back against the wall. “Please come back to me, Angel,” Logan said as he wrapped his arms around her.
“She always was a pain in the ass,” Chris said with a sad smile as he joined them.
“She was perfect,” Logan said, kissing the top of her head. “Absolutely perfect.”
“You love her?” Chris asked after a slight hesitation.
“More than anything,” Logan whispered against her damp hair.
“And the reason why you let me think my sister was dead?” Chris asked as he reached over and took her hand in his.
“Because I’m an asshole,” Logan said flatly as Kale joined them.
“You’ve had your moments over the years,” Kale drawled, making his lips twitch despite the fact that he felt like his heart was breaking in two.
“You know that this isn’t over, right, leech?” Chris asked hollowly, absently running his thumb over the back of Jill’s hand and looking absolutely lost.
“I didn’t think it was,” Logan said, closing his eyes as he dropped his head back against the wall.
“Did you know that she was pregnant?” Kale asked softly as Logan realized that Tomas was right.
He wasn’t going to survive this.
