Chapter 5

CHAPTER 5

“ L ogan?” came the hesitant murmur as Logan stood there, wondering why she hadn’t begged for her life.

“What is it?” Logan asked, dropping his head back against the wall as he thought about the moment when Jill realized that she was about to die. He’d expected tears, pleas for mercy, and offers to do whatever it took to get him to change her, but instead, she’d simply closed her eyes and released a shaky breath seconds before she’d slipped into another coma.

“I have an update,” the mutt that had the unfortunate luck of being born into a Pack with two other Alphas said as his gaze flickered to the small woman who’d spent the past two days clinging to life before he thought better of it and forced himself to look away.

“About?” Logan asked as he listened to Jill’s heart beat weakly against her chest.

“Everything.”

“Tell me,” Logan said as he pushed away from the wall and made his way to the floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the dimly lit park below.

“There’s still no word on the human that shot her, but they don’t believe that he acted alone,” Gray began while Logan found himself wondering what he would do if she didn’t open her eyes again.

He’d forget about her, Logan told himself as he asked, “And her body?”

“They believe that it was taken to collect the bounty,” Gray explained while Logan stood there, listening as Jill struggled to take her next breath.

“Did anyone claim the bounty?” Logan asked as he thought about what the shifter said, wondering how they’d found out about Jill.

After he’d marked her, her family sent her to New Hampshire to live with her grandmother under the protection of the Sentinel guarding the area where she’d stayed. Between the Sentinel and the men he’d left surrounding the town to watch over her, not one fucking demon, shifter, or vampire should have been able to get within fifty miles of that town, but somehow, they’d found her.

They’d placed a bounty on her and set her apartment on fire to force her to flee, deciding to turn this into a fucking game. Over the years, several of his minions had been hunted down and tortured simply to piss him off, but this felt personal. Whoever was behind this had gone to great lengths to find her, risking pissing off the Sentinels when they set that fire and involved the humans.

It wasn’t normally something they’d risk doing over a minion, which made him wonder why they did it for Jill. Her father was a Pyte who worked with the Sentinels and her adopted brother was a Sentinel, which would have made her worth a little revenge. When he’d discovered a bounty had been placed on her, he’d decided to take her out of the game and draw the attention of the local Sentinel to keep her safe.

He-

“It appears that whoever put the bounty on her head got tired of waiting,” Gray said as Logan forced himself to stand there, staring straight ahead as Jill’s breathing became labored.

“And the house in Boston?” Logan asked as he slowly exhaled.

“By the time the Sentinels finished cleaning up the mess with the shifter and demon, the house was completely engulfed in flames, destroying every trace that we were ever there, and anything the flames missed, the humans managed to destroy when they put out the fire,” Gray explained, sounding distracted as Jill struggled to cling to life.

“The cameras?”

“Their cameras were taken out before the attack. They pieced together what happened from human eyewitnesses and the blood left behind,” Gray said, which explained why they didn’t know that he’d been there. His blood would have turned to ash before it hit the pavement, destroying any evidence that he’d been there. “They believe that she lost too much blood to survive.”

“And the shifter and demon?” Logan asked as he fisted his hands by his sides when Jill released a whimper. There was a slight pause before Gray answered.

“They never recovered.”

Nodding absently, Logan asked, “What else?” as he thought about the moment when he made it past the human. Before he could pull Jill into his arms, they were there, doing everything within their power to stop him from getting to her, leaving him with no choice but to tear them apart.

“The Sentinels were able to find eight of the Sentinel infants,” Gray said as Logan forced himself to stand there when her breaths became shallow.

“The other two?” Logan asked, needing the reminder that he had more important matters to deal with than the small woman that was seconds away from dying. He had a plan, one that he’d been working on for centuries that was finally about to come to an end. He didn’t have time to play any fucking games, not with the war beginning. He needed to put an end to this before sides were picked and he was forced to deal with more than just a fucking mutt.

“Rumor has it that Magnus has them and has already found a bidder,” Gray said as Jill struggled to take her next breath.

“Find them,” Logan murmured, closing his eyes while he listened while the small woman that was slowly fucking destroying him took her last breath as her heart skipped a beat and then…

Ten.

Nine.

Eight.

Seven.

Six.

Five.

Four.

Three.

“Two,” Logan whispered hoarsely as he opened his eyes and-

“One.”
