Chapter 39

CHAPTER 39

I t was time to go.

He needed to get back to Manhattan and ensure the alliances that he’d made with the Packs there remained, Logan reminded himself only to glare at the bedroom door across from him, willing it to open so that he could see his angel one last time before he had to leave and-

“How did you sleep?” Tomas asked with a satisfied sigh as he leaned back against the wall across from him, his eyes lit with unholy humor as he watched him.

“Fuck off,” Logan said, determined to ignore the little bastard as he waited for his angel simply to make sure that she knew that he was leaving.

It was the polite thing to do, Logan told himself only to narrow his eyes on the door when it still didn’t fucking open a minute later.

“I slept well,” Tomas murmured, sounding thoughtful.

“Don’t fucking care,” Logan said, wondering why he was trying to piss him off.

“It was hard not to sleep like a baby with that soothing roar reverberating throughout the house,” Tomas drawled, drawing his attention to find the little bastard smiling hugely.

“I will fucking kill you,” Logan bit out as he allowed his eyes to turn silver, giving the demon the only warning that he was going to get before he ripped his-

“Probably,” Tomas murmured, not really sounding all that concerned as he considered him. “You know what I’ve been wondering?”

“No,” Logan said evenly as he returned his attention to the bedroom door and-

God, he was fucking pathetic, Logan decided as he pushed away from the wall and made his way to the staircase only to end up biting back a sigh when the demon decided to join him. “How are you planning on getting around the blood bond?” Tomas asked as they made their way downstairs.

“We’ll handle the blood exchange through deliveries,” Logan said, knowing that he didn’t have a choice. Not after she’d consumed his blood. She wouldn’t be able to heal without his blood and he wouldn’t be able to do what needed to be done if he had to worry about her.

“That does sound romantic,” Tomas murmured absently.

“Fuck off, demon,” Logan said, making the bastard chuckle as he followed him into the library.

“It does bring up an interesting question,” Tomas said, sounding really fucking amused for some reason.

“And what’s that?” Logan drawled, searching for the copy of Huckleberry Finn that would bring this asinine conversation to an end.

“What are you going to do when she figures out that you’ve claimed her?” Tomas asked as he reached over and pushed Huckleberry Finn to the left until they heard a small click.

“There’s no reason that she needs to find out,” Logan said, grabbing the edge of the bookshelf when it swung free from the wall and shoved it open.

“You really don’t think that she’s going to have questions after last night?” Tomas asked as Logan headed down the dark staircase and-

“I heard her answering moan,” Tomas said, making Logan swallow hard as he thought about the first time he had sex.

He’d needed to destroy his blood’s appeal, so one night, he’d approached an unmated shifter at the tavern that had been watching him all night. Without a word, she’d taken his hand and led him upstairs to one of the rooms. As soon as the door closed behind them, she was on her knees, loosening his trousers and freeing his cock while he’d leaned back against the door, glaring up at the ceiling and hating every fucking second of it.

When she wrapped her hand around his cock and began stroking him, he thought about Elizabeth, imagining that it was her small hand moving over him. When she wrapped her lips around his cock and moaned, Logan closed his eyes and nearly lost his fucking mind when the image of Elizabeth on her knees, begging him to save her, nearly dropped him to his knees.

So, he’d stopped thinking about her.

He’d focused on the shifter moaning as she sucked his cock, the rage that filled him every fucking minute of the day and lost himself in her touch. By the time she turned around on her knees and dragged her skirts up before placing her hands against the hardwood floor, he’d welcomed the small reprieve.

After that, sex became a distraction and was never anything more than a release until last night and he hated himself for it. Guilt should be tearing him apart, but the only thing that he felt was…peace. She was like a fucking drug that he couldn’t seem to get enough of and if he didn’t leave now, he was afraid that he never would.

“It doesn’t matter,” Logan said as he forced himself to keep moving, knowing that he didn’t have a choice.

The only thing that mattered was finally ending this.

Jill and the children were just a distraction, one that he would eventually forget about. They’d be better without him, Logan told himself as he made his way through the tunnel and-

“And what happens when she moves on?” came the question that had his jaw clenching painfully.

“Keep them safe,” Logan said instead, knowing that one day, his angel would move on and find her dream man, who would love her and the children more than anything and-

He fucking hated him.

When the demon paused by the stairs, Logan nearly sighed with relief as he quickened his pace, reminding himself of all the reasons why he couldn’t stay as he made his way up the stairs, through the office and-

Christ, she was beautiful, Logan thought, watching as the woman who was making it difficult to remember why he needed to leave, placed a wooden toolbox on top of the stall door.

“What are you doing, Angel?” Logan asked, watching Jill as she took her time sorting through the contents of the toolbox.

“Besides wondering why you’re still here?” Jill asked, throwing him a curious look before she went back to doing whatever it was that she was doing.

“Besides that,” Logan said, waving it off.

“I’m looking for a way to fix the closet door in the children’s room,” Jill said, worrying her bottom lip between her teeth as she picked up a rusted chisel only to decide against it a few seconds later and placed it back in the toolbox.

“What’s wrong with the door?” Logan asked as he joined her.

“For starters, it’s leaning against the wall,” Jill said as she picked up a rusted screwdriver only to grumble when the move caused the handle to fall off.

“What else?” Logan asked only to frown when she pulled a folded piece of paper out of her back pocket and handed it to him. He read over the list of everything that needed to be fixed in the children’s room, from their closet door to the wallpaper and-

“A fort?” Logan drawled as his gaze flickered up to find her nodding solemnly.

“It’s a necessity,” Jill assured him.

“I see,” Logan murmured as he returned his attention to the list. “And how were you planning on pulling that off?”

“With a lot of luck,” she said, making his lips twitch as he read through the list and-

“A doll house?” Logan asked, looking up to find her once again searching through the toolbox.

Without a word, Jill reached over and plucked the list from his hand, unfolded it, turned it around and handed it back to him so that she could focus on the small hammer and-

“Damn it,” she mumbled sadly when the hammer head broke off to join the screwdriver while Logan took in the dollhouse that his little shadow drew in crayon.

“And how were you planning on pulling this off?” Logan asked as he took in the two-story pink house with large windows and double doors with a crudely drawn teddy bear peeking out through one of the windows.

“Most likely with duct tape,” Jill said around a heavy sigh as she gave up any hope of finding something useful in the toolbox and shoved everything back inside while he stood there, unable to look away from the drawing in his hands and-

“Thank you for saving us, Logan,” Jill said as she leaned up and kissed his cheek before she walked away, leaving him standing there as he reluctantly folded the piece of paper and slid it into his pocket, knowing that it was finally time to go.

“You’re welcome, Angel.”
