Chapter 31

ANA

As Ana tended to Quinn, a group of his loyal soldiers swiftly moved into position around them. They formed a protective circle, weapons at the ready.

A ragged groan escaped Quinn's lips, a sound that ripped through Ana's despair like a lifeline. Relief flooded her as she cradled his face. His eyelids fluttered open, weak but alive."Quinn," she rasped, worry constricting her throat.

"My love?" he croaked, wincing as he tried to sit up.

"Hold still," she commanded, her touch firm despite the trembling in her hands. "How are you feeling?"

He grimaced, gingerly probing the lump swelling on his head. "Like an oalnt kicked me." He sighed. "Just a headache."

She checked him over with urgency. Other than that alarming goose egg, he seemed blessedly uninjured, but she would need to watch for signs of concussion. "Can you stand?"

He nodded then tilted his head. His gaze landed on Dygo.

"He's dead," she said.

His eyes widened. "You?" Disbelief mingled with a flicker of admiration. "He was a formidable foe."

"I had to protect you." The words hung heavy, tinged with guilt. Her hand, sticky with dried blood, trembled as she met his eyes. "It was you or him," she confessed in a whisper.

He squeezed her hand. "No apologies, my love. You did what you had to do."

A fresh wave of regret threatened to drown her, warring with the spark of fierce empowerment that flickered in her breast. Quinn reached out, brushing a stray lock of hair from her face. The familiar warmth of his touch momentarily held the churning turmoil at bay.

He pulled her close, surrounding her in his protective embrace, a solace from the madness. "How can I ease your heart, my love?"

The wind howled, carrying the metallic tang of blood and the clash of weapons.

"Later," she echoed, squeezing his chest. "For now, let's finish this." She gestured toward the battle raging around them. "And promise me you'll come back alive."

His kiss was desperate, laced with a hint of fear. "I promise." A weak chuckle escaped him. "If victory means returning to you, this war shall be short-lived."

He leaned heavily on her as he stood, his gaze scanning the battlefield. He retrieved his sword from Dygo's lifeless body and launched himself into the fray with a mighty leap.

Sweat beaded on Quinn's brow as he surveyed the battlefield. Quinn pivoted, his gaze sweeping over his loyal guards. "Gargoyles," he rasped, "soldiers... to victory or oblivion. Time to end this fight!"

With a roar, he transformed into a tempest of blades, slicing through Gregor's ranks with astonishing prowess. Ana's heart swelled with a mix of pride, though lingering guilt gnawed at her core.

To her left, Orry flipped Tilda high into the air, her delighted squeals piercing through the chaos like a mockingbird's song. Her boomerang whistled, striking a gargoyle in mid-flight with sickening accuracy. Tilda's laughter was tinged with the intoxicating thrill as Orry caught her nimbly, crushing her lips with a passionate, possessive kiss.

To her right, Zach, Luke, and Sebastian fought with their backs to one another in a well-oiled triad of lethal defense. Sebastian, bloodied but relentless, dodged a gargoyle's wild swing before landing a brutal uppercut that sent the brute staggering.

Ana gripped her sword tighter—time for her to join the dance. Taking a deep breath, she channeled her raw emotions into a war cry that echoed across the mountaintop.

At long last, Quinn emerged victorious, and Gregor's forces were routed. The battle had ravaged the land. Smoke choked the air, and the stench of blood hung heavy. Near the castle, shrouded figures lay waiting for their last farewells. Gargoyles were readied for pyres, while gnomes, honored for their bravery, would find rest beneath a young sapling.

Gnomes, their faces etched with exhaustion, herded weary gargoyle soldiers in chains toward the dungeons. Some bore the sticky green remnants of Tilda's ingenious concoction. Others wandered aimlessly as if in a daze.

"What's with them?" Ana asked Tilda, who washed the bandages. She pointed to the disoriented warriors.

The redheaded female chuckled, a mischievous glint in her eye. "Just a little somethin' extra in their food and drink." She shrugged. "Seems it worked."

Despite herself, Ana laughed. Kneeling beside a motionless wee man, she cleaned caked blood from a nasty head wound. "You never cease to amaze me, Tilda."

Tilda blushed, pride flickering in her smile.

Together, they moved from one wounded soldier to the next; gnomes carried into tents, gargoyles laid out waiting for the moon's light. Grief settled over Ana as she surveyed the devastation. Yet amidst the pain, a sense of purpose bloomed. Those hurt had fought bravely, and they deserved her care.

With skilled hands, they bandaged torn flesh, set broken bones, and soothed agonized screams. Tilda's potent healing salves worked wonders, both easing torturous suffering and whispering soft comfort to those hovering on the brink of oblivion. The weight of sacrifice hung like a dark pall, an endless roll call of those who would never again see the sun's warm light.

Ana secured the final knot on the bandage encasing the gnome's stump, offering a reassuring smile to the brave little warrior.

Ana washed her hands, then splashed her face with water from a fresh bucket, the coolness a brief respite from the day's turmoil. As she patted her skin dry with a rough cloth, her gaze lifted to an approaching soldier, cradling a bundle of fur that squirmed with life.

"My Queen?"

The gargoyle offered the bundle to her. "Found this creature near here, Your Majesty. It wouldn't leave me alone." He smiled. "Strange ball of fur, never saw one like it before. Thought perhaps you might know it?"

Ana gasped and flew her hand to her mouth. "Tig? But…how?" She widened her eyes as he held out the purring, orange puffball. "It's my cat!"

Tig meowed loudly, tail held high and slightly vibrating. Tears welled in Ana's eyes as she took Tig. At that moment, amidst the wreckage of war, a piece of her past life had been returned. It was a joy beyond measure. A wish whispered to the night sky answered.

The soldier petted Tig's head. "Brave," he rumbled, respect in his voice. "The Queen's home was far." He kneeled to look Tig in the eyes. "Long journey for such a small creature." He smiled and stood. "Very brave."

Ana, overwhelmed, could only manage a watery smile. "Thank you," she choked out, "more than words can express."

He bowed and left.

Ana cradled Tig. "How did you find me?" The cat purred, nuzzling her hand.

"What's this new beast?" Tilda asked, peering over Ana's shoulder.

"My cat, Tig," Ana said. "Want to pet her?"

Tilda wrinkled her nose. "Too hairy."

Spotting curious gnome children peeking from behind trees, Tilda scolded, "I told you lot to stay safe in the caverns!"

"We wanted to see the fight," a green-eyed boy piped up.

Clung to his leg, a little girl poked her head out from behind him. She pointed at Tig. "What's that?"

A chorus of questions erupted: "Can I touch it?" "Does it poop?" "What is it?" "Does it bite?"

Kneeling, Ana calmed them. "Tig's my cat."

A brown-haired girl stepped forward, eyes wide with hope. "Can I hold her?"

Ana smiled. "Careful, okay?" She eased Tig into the girl's arms.

The children squealed with delight, taking turns holding the cat. One boy volunteered to get her food and water, sparking a playful scramble among them.

Ana laughed as they stumbled over each other, leaving.

Tilda placed a hand on Ana's arm. "Food, Ma'am?"

Shaking her head, she sighed. "After all you've done?" Ana knelt before her. "I should be serving you." She embraced her, a silent thanks.

Tilda hugged back. "My duty," she mumbled. "But I'm not hungry."

"I understand." Ana looked at the covered bodies. "Neither am I."

Tilda glanced down. "We should honor them. Would you let me organize a ceremony?"

"Quinn would appreciate it." Ana searched around. "I should find him."

"Thank you." The wee female nodded. "We've done what we can for now. Let's get some rest."

Ana embraced Tilda again before walking to where Quinn oversaw the cleanup efforts. Seeing him, a yearning for his touch ignited within her. He finished a conversation with a gargoyle soldier, then noticed her approaching, a tender smile blooming across his face.

With every step Quinn took, palpable anticipation built within Ana, an electric current that seemed to arc between them across the distance. When he finally reached her, the world beyond their embrace ceased to exist. His arms were a sanctuary, banishing the chill of fear and replacing it with the warmth of shared triumph.

Their lips met in a kiss that was both a balm for past sorrows and a toast to their shared future. It was a moment of profound connection, a silent vow made under the watchful gaze of the setting sun. As they parted, the intensity smoldering in his gaze promised that this was just the beginning of their journey together. The battle was over, and they had emerged victorious, not just as warriors, but as partners bound by love and resilience.

Ana's breath hitched as Quinn's hand slid possessively down the curve of her back, sending an electrifying jolt of pure desire lancing through her. Even the thought of washing away the grime of battle seemed a distant, trivial concern.

"Inside?" she whispered, her voice husky with longing. "This audience has seen enough heroics for one day." Her fingers grazed his chest, a silent invitation.

His tail brushed slowly against the back of her calf, raising goosebumps and sending a bolt of molten electricity arcing up her spine. The naked want blazing in his eyes made her knees tremble. "My thoughts exactly, My Queen."

"Lead the way, Your Majesty," she murmured, placing a teasing kiss on the throbbing pulse at the base of his throat. "Take us home."

With a low, rumbling growl that resonated straight to her core, Quinn swept Ana up into his muscular arms, her legs winding around his waist. Then, with an arching leap, they soared through the cotton-candy sky toward the castle's loftiest balcony.

He landed them with preternatural grace, talons scratching against the stone as Ana slid from his embrace. Warm, buttery sunlight streamed through the ornately carved windows, casting flickering patterns across the plush bedchamber's opulent furnishings and imposing fireplace.

"This…this is your room?" She widened her eyes, taking in the opulent chamber. His indigo gaze swept over her disheveled form in a languorous caress, practically branding her flesh with his possessiveness.

"Ours," he rasped, pulling her back against him in a scorchingly hot clinch, the living furnace of his body banishing her residual chill. His mouth found hers in a kiss that seared away every last scrap of propriety, kindling the banked flames of their desire into an all-consuming wildfire. His tail curled around her thigh as his hands roamed with increasing desperation.

"Actually," Ana gasped, breaking away with monumental effort to suck in a ragged breath. "I find myself...famished."

Confusion and outright disappointment flickered across Quinn's features. "You...want food? Now?"

She couldn't help but give a throaty laugh at his dumbstruck expression, so beautifully endearing despite his fearsome visage. "You misunderstand, my love."

His low chuckle resonated like warm velvet against her flushed skin. "Then enlighten me, my ravenous warrior queen. What ails this hunger of yours?"

A slow, predatory smile curved Ana's lips as she deliberately pressed herself against his hardened length. "You, always…for you," she purred, rolling her hips in a slow, undulating grind.

Before he could react, she pushed him back onto the massive bed with a shock of powerful force. Then she was on him in a flurry of tangled limbs and questing lips, nipping at his earlobe with her blunt little teeth. She trailed kisses down the corded column of his neck, following the throbbing of his pulse until her mouth found his once more.

"You stole a kiss," Quinn rumbled between ragged gasps, his heated breath fanning across Ana's flushed skin as she hovered over him.

She looked down at him through lowered lashes, smiling a wicked grin. His arousal pulsed against her inner thigh. "Oh, I plan on stealing much more than that."

The words were barely a whispered purr before she lowered her mouth to his chest, painting scorching trails with her questing tongue. Her mouth traveled across the rugged plains and valleys of his body, marking every well-muscled contour as her own.

A slow, predatory smile spread across Quinn's features as she explored him with unrestrained ardor. "There will be payback for such thievery, my love," he growled, the promise rife with delicious menace.

With a snarl, she seized his lips, a bandit claiming her prize. This time, their kiss was a battle for dominance, a scorching clash of tongue and teeth. Ana finally ripped away, gasping for air, his exotic taste branded onto her tongue.

"That...barely qualifies as payback..." he panted, "for a stolen kiss."

His large hands roamed the curves of her body with fervent possession, stripping away her clothing as slowly as a life sentence. Inch by electrifying inch, her bare flesh was exposed to his smoldering gaze and insistent caress.

Ana traced the hard lines and whorls of his musculature in return, her fingertips trailing down his battle-hewn torso until she reached his waist band.

"This is far too...dirty," she murmured, giving the pant ties a teasing tug. "It has to come off."

With a deft pull, the knot unraveled and she slipped the offending garment down his thickly-muscled thighs, finally freeing him from its confines. Ana drank in the sight of her warrior god in all his primal, naked glory, desire throbbing in her core with a ferocious hunger.

She greedily gazed at his member. Thick and with a broad head, a glint of moisture shimmered at the tip. Unable to resist, she licked it, causing him to shudder and groan with pleasure.

"More," he pleaded.

The playful banter dissipated, consumed by a fierce wildfire of lust and overpowering love given free rein to blaze. She willingly complied and licked it again, while simultaneously stroking its length with her hand. Enjoying the sensation of his firmness, her touch grew more urgent and intense. His smoothness against her palm sent shivers down her spine.

When she replaced her hand with her mouth, Quinn gasped and bucked his hips. Her tongue danced along the entirety of his member, relishing every teasing flick and gentle suck. Each movement elicited a gasp of pleasure from him, encouraging her to continue. She reveled in her power over him, knowing that with a simple lick, she could bring him to the brink and back again.

He pulled her away from his cock. "My wicked sorceress," he said, lifting her lips to his and kissing her. "You will make me climax too soon."

His hands explored every inch of her body, while his tail skillfully massaged her clit in a frenzy, driving her to the peak of pleasure until she tumbled over, waves of ecstasy washing over her.

"And I would have no time for my plans for you," he growled. Without warning, he flipped their positions, moving his head between her thighs. "Your scent is intoxicating," Quinn said, his voice rough. "But I wonder about your taste."

Opening her legs wider, his blond hair cascaded over his face as he lavished attention on her. She gasped in bliss at the flick of his tongue. His mouth worked magic, expertly exploring every sensitive area. At a luscious suck, she arched her back and lifted her hips, craving even more of his expansive skill. The sensations overwhelmed her as he devoured her with a fervor that left her breathless.

Just as she was on the verge of climax, he moved once again. He positioned himself to crouch over her, his primal presence filling the room. She gawked in awe at his sheer size and power.

In one forceful stroke, he entered her with such depth and intensity that it took her breath away. A scream escaped her lips as pure bliss washed over her entire being.

His large hand cradled the back of her neck and pulled her into another searing, soul-scorching kiss. This time, there was no playful battle, no holding back—only an all-consuming wildfire of lust and overpowering love given free rein to blaze. She lost herself in the moment, elevating her beyond the physical realm as she surrendered to the raw passion of their union.

His relentless energy matched hers, their bodies moving together in a symphony of desire and love. Moaning in ecstasy, she twisted and writhed beneath him, surrendering herself to the waves of pleasure crashing over her. His groan mingled with hers as he collapsed upon her, his shaft pulsing within her clenching sheath. They both shuddered in euphoric release.

After their breathing calmed, Quinn shifted to his side, pulling Ana flush against him. In that endless moment, their intimacy transcended the physical plane—their very souls bound by an unbreakable chord of love, desire, and profound belonging. Nothing else mattered in that sacred embrace except the exquisite press of their bodies and the blazing truth seared into her very spirit—she was exactly where she was meant to be, sheltered in Quinn's embrace.

As the sun set on their entwined forms, the final piece of the puzzle slid perfectly into place. The questioning of why she was brought here through that fateful sinkhole fell blessedly silent. What seemed a cruel whim of chance was revealed as a deliberate act of fate. She was part of a greater tapestry, and Quinn was the complementary edge, filling her aching void.

Her cheek rested against Quinn's chest. The steady cadence of his heartbeat merged with hers in perfect synchronicity. With a contented sigh, Ana surrendered to the rhythmic lullaby, basking in this pure, powerful love that sustained her like the sun's rays. This was her purpose, her destiny finally unfurled.

And so, as the moon enfolded them in its healing embrace, putting the long trials and tribulations to rest, Ana's spirit found its ultimate refuge. She was home—not a mere physical place, but within the shelter of her soulmate's undying devotion.

All was right.
