Chapter 35

CHAPTER

THIRTY-FIVE

Tori watched the man walk away, her heart pounding in her ears.

Was this a mistake?

Only once the man had disappeared from sight did Kai usher her into the SUV. Meanwhile, Gage checked beneath the vehicle.

What was he looking for? A tracking device? Or maybe something even worse—something like a bomb?

The blood drained from her face.

She was in over her head. She had been ever since she started looking into her brother's death.

Finally, Gage climbed in the SUV, slammed the door, and they took off.

"Are you guys really going to meet this guy tonight?" Tori had overheard that much and now she was desperate to know what Kai and Gage were thinking.

Did they have some type of plan she didn't know about? Some type of tactic that would keep them safe? The whole thing sounded too risky.

"We need to meet him," Kai said. "See what he knows. Maybe we can help each other out."

"But what if it's a setup?" Her voice cracked as she asked the question. "What if you're ambushed?"

"We know that's a risk," Kai said, his voice mellow and serious.

On one hand, it made her feel better to know Kai and Gage were aware of what they might get into.

On the other hand, what if this ended up getting them killed?

For a split second, Tori wished she'd never tried to find Kai. That she hadn't come to him with this information. That she hadn't asked so many questions.

Then maybe Landon would still be alive. Maybe attempts wouldn't have been made on Kai's life. On Gage's life. On her own life.

Yet how could she turn a blind eye to everything she knew?

She couldn't.

The thought settled heavy across her chest, making it hard to breathe.

Gage pulled from the parking garage and onto the city street. Tori wasn't even sure where they were heading. She didn't ask.

She had no doubt Kai and Gage had a plan. She would go where they took her.

She did know, however, that they still had four hours before they were supposed to meet this guy.

Four hours was enough time for trouble to find them again.

At that thought, she glanced out the window beside her as Gage stopped at a red light.

A cop car pulled up beside them.

The officer in the passenger seat glanced over and did a double take at them.

Her gut clenched.

"You guys." Her voice shook. "I think we might have a problem."

Kai saw the cop punching something into his computer.

Tension instantly threaded through him.

"They're going to be onto us," he told Gage. "We need to move."

As soon as the light turned and the car in front of him moved forward, Gage accelerated and took the first right turn.

Kai glanced in the mirror.

The police car followed in the same direction.

They'd been made. He was sure of it.

He and Gage were going to need to make a quick decision on how to handle this situation before things turned ugly.

The police car's sirens yelped twice, the quick bursts of sound indicating they should pull over.

"What's our move?" Kai asked Gage.

"If we let them pull us over then we're all going to jail. Knowing the people behind this, they're going to fudge more evidence and make it look as if we're guilty. We can't take that chance, especially not when we're so close to finding answers."

As soon as the words left Gage's lips, he jerked the wheel and made another righthand turn. They were almost out of the downtown area.

The last thing that Kai wanted was a police chase through these streets.

But that was exactly what it appeared they were going to get.

The police siren chirped again, giving them one last warning.

Gage hit the accelerator, and they flew through a red light, barely missing several oncoming vehicles. Horns blared from every direction.

"I hope you know what you're doing," Tori said in the back seat, her voice trembling.

If there was one thing he and Gage were good at doing, it was losing people.

But the traffic and congestion would make it difficult right now.

Gage ran through the next light, and more vehicles slammed on their brakes.

The police car zoomed behind them, sirens now blazing and lights flashing.

It was just a matter of time before more police joined the chase. Kai had no doubt the driver had already put out an APB.

This wouldn't be an easy situation to maneuver.

Unfortunately, they had no other choice but to keep trying.
