Chapter 43
Trevor wasn’tsure what to think about Sadie’s idea.
On one hand, it had merit. She made the most sense. She would have been invited to the party anyway.
But on the other hand, she may have been close to figuring out who was working with Frederick, and that would put her in a direct line of fire.
“What if you have agents stationed outside?” she asked. “And I can call you at the first hint of danger?”
“There’s no guarantee we would get there in time even if we were stationed outside.”
“I think I can do this,” Sadie said. “I can bring Trevor with me, and he’ll watch my back.”
Part of Trevor was surprised she would even want him there, knowing everything she did. But maybe she’d made that statement simply out of desperation.
“I just don’t think this is going to work,” Richard said.
“I promise, I won’t mess it up. If something’s going down, I need to be there to figure out what it is. Trevor will protect me.”
“I just don’t understand how you’ll figure out what’s going on if you can’t remember anything.” Richard’s expression turned even stonier.
“You can brief me on everything that I’ve told you. Then I’ll know.”
Richard’s jaw tightened, and he frowned. But it appeared he was considering it.
Finally, he turned back to Sadie and nodded. “Fine. I’ll brief you. I’ll have to set you up with a wire so we can hear everything that’s going on.” Then he looked at Trevor. “But we can’t let this go south. It’s already a risky operation, and Sadie’s amnesia only makes this more complicated.”
From the sound of it, Richard didn’t know that Trevor was the one who’d ultimately brought down Frederick. It made sense. That information was highly classified, so classified that not even the feds should know.
Trevor offered a curt nod. “I understand. You can count on me.”
If Frederick’s minions were still up to no good, he wanted to know what they were doing.
Maybe tonight he would know once and for all.

An hour later, Sadie had been briefed.
The FBI believed that someone at Sleeping Bear Elevator was secretly working for Frederick and using the company to smuggle drugs into the country. Intel had led them to the elevator company, but they still needed proof.
That was where Sadie had come in.
She’d been instructed to infiltrate the company and snoop around for answers. Hired as an accountant, she had access to the company’s financials.
The first few months had been slow, and she had been using her relationship with Guy to try to find out more information.
Their initial suspect was Frank, but she’d found no evidence that he was behind it.
The VP, Mark Stuart, and COO, Juan Blevins, were also suspects.
Armed with this new information, she’d gone to the store and picked out a black dress for tonight. Trevor had gotten a nice pair of black slacks with a blue shirt. Then they’d spent thirty minutes getting ready so they could look presentable.
Sadie’s eyes widened when she stepped out of the bathroom and saw Trevor standing there.
He certainly did look handsome with every hair in place, his face freshly shaven, and his clothes clean and pressed.
If only she could rewrite the history between them . . .
Every time she looked at him, her heart began to thump out of control.
Based on the way he stared back at her, he felt the same thing.
The two of them had found each other only for this uncrossable chasm to form.
It seemed like such a wasted opportunity.
But Sadie had a hard time seeing how the two of them could ever trust each other again. Not after all the deception each of them had been through.
“You look beautiful.” Trevor had a wispiness to his voice that sounded sincere.
“You don’t look bad yourself.” She paused in front of him, resisting the urge to straighten his collar. Touching him right now was a terrible idea.
He lowered his gaze. “You sure you’re up for this?”
Sadie nodded, probably a little too quickly. “Of course. I need to do this. It’s the only way I’ll get on with my life . . . whatever that’s going to look like.”
She had more answers now, but the thought of continuing as Special Agent Sadie Hayes left her feeling empty and confused, like that wasn’t her place anymore. Maybe that would change. But maybe it wouldn’t.
Kai met them in the room, and Sadie took a step back, realizing she was standing entirely too close to Trevor.
Kai would go along with them tonight and work with the FBI to monitor the situation.
“Did I interrupt something?” Kai glanced back and forth between them.
“No.” Sadie and Trevor both answered at the same time. “Of course not.”
“Okay then.” Kai cleared his throat. “If you guys are ready, let’s get you wired, and then we can go.”
