Chapter 37

Trevor and Sadiedecided to grab something to eat at a Mexican restaurant down the road.

They remained quiet on the drive.

Trevor couldn’t stop thinking about that man and who he might be.

He didn’t recognize the guy—other than as the man who’d been following them. Did he work for Frederick Moreau?

It seemed like a good possibility.

Trevor didn’t expect Sadie to know anything more than he did so he didn’t ask any questions.

But as they headed down the street, he glanced in his rearview mirror and saw a car tailing them. “Oh, great . . .”

“What is it?” Sadie’s voice stretched thin with anxiety.

He stared at the dark-colored sedan. “I think we’re being followed.”

“By the guy from the elevator?” She swung her head back to look at the road behind them.

“It’s hard to say.”

It was hard to know who any of their enemies were. In fact, Trevor could be sitting beside an enemy right now. It was impossible to know for sure.

For the moment, he simply needed to concentrate on getting away from this guy alive.

Trevor took a sharp right turn.

Sadie gasped beside him and reached for the grab bar overhead.

He glanced in the rearview mirror. The sedan was still there.

“Why do you think they’re following us?” Sadie’s voice trembled as she asked the question.

“You probably don’t want to know.” His grip on the steering wheel tightened.

There was no good reason for the car to follow them. Only if that driver wanted to harm them. If someone thought Sadie was getting too close to the truth, that could very well be the case.

He took another turn, this time to the left. Several cars threw on their brakes as he raced across an intersection.

Trevor prayed this might work.

But as he heard more vehicles laying on their horns, he knew that wasn’t the case.

That car was still behind him, the driver becoming more aggressive by the moment.

“What are we going to do?” Sadie sounded breathless.

“Right now, I’m just trying to lose them.”

“And if that’s not possible?”

His throat tightened at her question and, before he could answer, a new sound split the air.

Two sounds, almost simultaneous.

Gunfire and glass shattering.

His back window exploded into a million pieces as he shouted, “Get down!”

* * *

Sadie’s heart pounded into her ears so loudly she could hardly hear anything else.

These guys meant serious business. No more hiding in the shadows or doing things in secret.

They were going all out in their attempts to silence either Trevor or Sadie. Or both.

Terror rippled through her.

Trevor jerked the steering wheel again, and Sadie slammed into the door.

“Trevor?” Desperation crackled in her voice. But she didn’t dare lift her head to see what was going on.

“I’m doing my best here . . .”

“I know you are.”

Then the windshield shattered, raining glass all over her. A muffled scream escaped before she could stop it.

Those guys—there had to be at least two, one driving, the other shooting—were still firing. Scaring them wasn’t enough.

These men were out for blood.

How would she and Trevor get out of this?

More horns honked around them. She had a feeling Trevor was trying to get out of town so no one else would be in danger.

Then she heard the sirens.

The police had been notified.

Maybe the cops would scare these guys, and they’d back off.

Then again, they were no holds barred right now.

It seemed as if they’d been given a mission to kill, whatever the cost.

What if Trevor died as a result?

Did this all go back to her? Or did some of this have to do with Trevor?

She wished she had some answers.

Maybe that man they’d met in the elevator knew something. Maybe he could explain some things.

Another bullet cut through the air, the sound causing her muscles to jerk.

Trevor muttered something under his breath.

They couldn’t keep going like this. Eventually, something would stop them. An empty fuel tank. An accident. A fatal gunshot.

Something!

Trevor sucked in a breath.

Sadie didn’t like the sound of that.

“Trevor?” she called over the roar of the wind coming in through the broken windshield.

“Hold on,” he ordered.

Part of her didn’t want to know what that meant.
