Chapter 27

Trevor couldn’t sleep. He’d known that would probably be the case. He had too much on his mind.

Once Sadie had been asleep for a while, he motioned for Kai to come into his room.

They stood beside the entry door, cracking it slightly so they could keep an eye on the hallway as they spoke.

This was just about as much privacy as they would get.

“What’s going on?” Kai asked.

“I think Sadie remembered something.” Trevor kept his voice low. “On the beach.”

Kai’s eyebrows shot up. “She wouldn’t tell you what?”

“No. I didn’t push too much. Didn’t want it to seem suspicious.”

Kai narrowed his eyes, his thoughts clearly churning as he put the pieces together. “What reason would she have for not telling you?”

“I’m not sure . . . unless it’s something involving me.” Trevor ran a hand over his face as he made the admission.

Kai’s gaze lingered on him a moment longer.

His colleague could tell something was up. Trevor knew it wasn’t fair to ask his friend to help while also keeping him in the dark. If he were in Kai’s shoes, he’d want to know the truth—especially since their job required putting their lives on the line.

Trevor let out a long sigh. “The truth is that I was seeing Sadie before the accident. I just didn’t tell Larchmont.”

Kai’s eyes lit with realization. “I knew it! I knew there was something more to this.”

“I was supposed to meet her at the beach on the day she was hit, but I was running a few minutes late. I got there in time to see . . .” His voice cracked, and he couldn’t finish his statement.

Kai continued to study Trevor’s face. “You like her, don’t you?”

“I did like her.” Trevor shrugged before releasing a deep sigh. “Now I’m not sure about anything.”

“It seems like a tangled web, doesn’t it?”

Sadie’s description earlier about the knotted yarn was perfect. Just when one knot had been unraveled, a new one formed. “Absolutely. Do you have any friends in WitSec?”

“I know of one guy.”

“Could you talk to him? See if it’s a possibility she’s in the program?”

“I’ll see what I can find out. In the meantime, what are you going to do?”

Trevor crossed his arms and glanced down the hallway again. It was still clear.

He looked back at Kai.

“I don’t know,” Trevor murmured with a frown. “I really don’t know.”

* * *

Sadie woke up with a start, her upper body springing forward as she gasped for air.

Something had jerked her from her sleep.

She glanced around.

The hotel room. That was right.

It was still dark in the room.

Not morning yet.

She slumped back down, trying to calm her racing heart. As far as she could remember, she hadn’t even been having a bad dream.

But something had awoken her.

She looked at the door and saw Kai was gone.

Her heart rate intensified.

Where was he? Trevor had assured her his colleague would be there all night.

Had something happened to him? Or had he simply left her alone?

Then voices drifted from the other room.

Kai and Trevor. They were talking.

Relief swept through her—relief that quickly turned to curiosity.

Quietly, she climbed out of bed. Maybe she shouldn’t eavesdrop. But she needed to know the truth. Until she knew who was being honest with her, she had no choice but to figure this out on her own.

She tiptoed toward the adjoining door, staying in the shadows.

The two men talked near the room entrance, keeping an eye on the hallway. She strained to make out what was being said.

“I think she remembered something,” Trevor said. “On the beach.”

“She wouldn’t tell you what?”

“I didn’t push too much. Didn’t want it to seem suspicious.”

“What reason would she have for not telling you?”

“I’m not sure . . . unless it’s something involving me.”

The rest of the conversation was garbled, and she couldn’t make out their words.

But she knew enough.

Trevor was keeping something from her. Sadie’s suspicions were correct. She wasn’t losing her mind.

Part of her wanted to run. To forget about anything she’d brought with her, duck out the door into the hallway, and flee. To keep fleeing. To get away.

She couldn’t do that.

Just as she’d decided earlier, she would stay close. Find out what Trevor knew. Figure out his true intentions.

For now.

But she wasn’t ruling out the possibility of running later.

All she knew was that, even though she couldn’t remember most of her background, she’d never been this terrified before in her life.

Nor had she ever felt so alone.
