Chapter 12

By the timeTrevor got back to the sidewalk, the officer who’d been seated behind him in the restaurant caught up. Officer Blanche, his name badge read.

“What’s going on?” Blanche demanded.

Trevor raised his hands to show he wasn’t the shooter. “I saw a man watching me and went outside to see why. He opened fire on me.”

The officer narrowed his eyes as if he didn’t believe him. “Who are you?”

“Trevor McGrath.”

“You ever see that guy before?”

“No, I haven’t. But I’ve been hired as a bodyguard for Sadie Carrington, the woman who was hit by a car earlier today at the beach.”

Realization captured Blanche’s face. “I see. You’re going to need to wait here. I’ll have more questions for you.”

“Of course.”

He pulled a pad of paper from his pocket. “Did you see the guy’s car? The license plate?”

Trevor shared the information, and the officer put his radio to his mouth and recited it to his coworkers, who were probably already in their patrol cars trying to find the shooter.

Trevor glanced around. It appeared no one had been hurt.

At least that was something to be thankful for.

Before Officer Blanche could question him any longer, a new figure stalked toward him.

Guy Merchant.

And the man didn’t look happy.

* * *

“What are you doing here?” Guy demanded, pausing in front of Trevor. The veins bulged at his temples, and his breathing looked shallow.

Trevor made sure not to react but to remain placid instead. “Maybe the better question is, what are you doing here?”

Guy scowled. “Are you following me? Spying on me?”

“Please, don’t flatter yourself,” Trevor said. “I was having dinner—not that I need to explain that to you.”

“Well, somebody needs to start explaining something.” The man’s chest puffed up with entitlement.

Officer Blanche turned to Guy. “Back off. We have other things to worry about rather than your ego right now.”

Trevor tried not to smirk at the man’s words, but it was difficult.

Guy scowled and crossed his arms, but he didn’t say anything else.

However, he patiently waited as the officer questioned Trevor.

Trevor told Blanche everything he knew, which wasn’t much. Well, maybe he didn’t tell him everything. But he told the officer about the situation that had happened both earlier and now here at the restaurant.

Then the officer looked back and forth between Trevor and Guy.

“So you’re acting as security for Ms. Carrington,” he glanced at Trevor then Guy, “and you’re her boyfriend?”

Guy’s scowl deepened. “She has amnesia, so everything is kind of upside down right now.”

“You can’t even write this stuff.” The officer jotted something down before shaking his head.

Trevor could agree with him on that.

But the truth was, Trevor had questions for Guy. Questions Guy no doubt wouldn’t want to answer.

Trevor decided to ask them anyway.

He locked his gaze on Guy’s, not bothering to hide the challenge in his eyes. “You looked awfully relaxed back there for someone whose girlfriend was nearly killed in a hit-and-run.”

His nostrils flared. “That’s none of your business. I just needed to blow off some steam.”

“I’m no expert on human behavior, but that didn’t look like blowing off steam. That looked more like apathy.”

Guy’s hands fisted at his sides.

The man clearly had a temper.

Even if Sadie had lied to Trevor . . . Even if she had been dating someone else . . . Even if she wasn’t who she said she was . . . Trevor prayed she wasn’t involved with Guy.

The man was a total hothead.

Trevor couldn’t help but wonder if Guy had something to do with what had happened today . . . either concerning Sadie or the dead man found in the woods.
