7. Harper

Chapter 7

Harper

I would do anything for you. Those words echo around my head and my heart. How I wish it meant that he would do anything for me in all the ways.

Staying with him could lead to disaster. This morning had shown that. Miles saw me naked! Neither of us mentioned it when I came downstairs, so I guess we are pretending it didn’t happen. I don’t know how I feel about that. If Miles had said something I might have had to face these new feelings.

“Are you okay?” Miles asks.

“Yeah, it’s just all a lot to think about. I’m feeling overwhelmed.”

“I’m sure you are. Anyone would be in your position.”

Miles stands at the table and starts cleaning up our breakfast. I jump up to help. “Let me do the dishes, please.”

“You don’t need to do that, Harper.”

“If I’m gonna stay here, you have to let me do things to help. I want to cook and help with the housework.”

“Are you going to stay here?” The smile on Miles’s face is brilliant. “You can do all the dishes if you want to.”

Laughing, I lightly push his arm and he pulls me into him. I resist for a second, but then I wrap my arms around his waist. It feels so natural to be in his arms.

We stand there in his kitchen, holding each other, for several minutes. His body is so big, strong, and warm. Would it be wrong to see what it’s like to feel his lips on mine?

I lean my head back and look up at him. Miles is so tall that I have to lean back pretty far, and this pushes the bottom halves of our bodies together. I feel his hard cock against me, shocking me into letting go, but Miles grabs me before I fall and lifts me into his arms. I wrap my legs around his waist and find myself staring directly into his eyes.

“Harper?”

“Yes?”

“I need to kiss you. Please don’t tell me no.”

“No.”

He nods and starts to let me down. Panicked, I grab his arms and lift myself higher. “I meant I won’t tell you no. Kiss me, Miles, I want you to…” Before I can finish uttering the words, his lips are on mine and I’m seeing fireworks behind my eyes.

His lips are soft and firm, the kisses gentle. One of his hands comes up behind my head, moving me where he wants me to be, taking charge in an unexpected but welcome way. Goosebumps spread down my body as he licks along the seam of my lips, sweetly asking for entrance, and I gladly grant it.

Why have we never done this before? Oh, yeah, because this is probably screwing up our friendship and we won’t be going back to what we were before. However, as his hands explore my body, I can’t bring myself to care.

We pull apart and Miles puts his forehead against mine. “Still okay, sweetheart?”

I nod and smile at him.

“Should we talk about this or…” Miles is interrupted by his phone ringing. “Shit, it’s probably the crew. I need to answer it.”

Suddenly, being in his arms feels awkward and I want to be anywhere but here. “It’s fine.”

I can tell that Miles wants to ignore his phone and talk, but I pull away from him, sliding down his hard body. Turning to the kitchen sink, I make a big show of rinsing the rest of our breakfast dishes and ignoring his conversation behind me as he talks to one of the men working at my house.

“Harper?”

“Hmm.” My heart beats fast and I wish I had left the room instead of staying so close to him. I don’t turn around, even when I feel his body right up against my back. I need to get away from him so I can think.

“I have to run over to your house. Do you want to go with me? We could talk in the truck?” Miles moves the hair on my neck and places a small kiss along my nape, causing my knees to almost buckle.

Afraid that if I turn around to face him, I will find myself back in his arms, I answer while staring at the backsplash. “I’ll drive over in my own car in a little bit. I need to do a few things first.”

Okay, sweetheart,” Miles answers, disappointment evident in his voice. “I’ll be at your house for the next several hours.”

I stand at the sink while Miles gathers his things and makes his way out to his truck. I wait until I hear him drive off before I move. Slumping into one of the seats at the kitchen table, I place my head in my hands. What have we done? Kissing my best friend has always been the one line I wouldn’t cross and after less than a day of playing house, there I am with my legs wrapped around his waist and his tongue down my throat. That’s why I can’t stay here.
