10. Brody

Chapter 10

Brody

E lla is like a child in a candy store as I lead her through those automatic doors—doors she was wary of at first, and it just breaks my heart how little she has seen of the world.

She spent most of her time in a cell, so when we step up to the doors, and they react to our footsteps, she gasps.

I chuckle. "They react to our footsteps. Look."

I stamp my feet and she blinks in wonder. "It's amazing."

We're blocking everyone's access into the shop, and while there may have been a few disgruntled shoppers, I never take my eyes off Ella.

We're pretty much about to enter Omega heaven. Shelves upon shelves of home comforts and sweet-smelling things.

Ella may hyperventilate.

It's a good thing she has me. I can show her how to be an Omega.

She still doesn't know how. All she has known is death and violence, but I can teach her how to be a mewling kitten. One that will make our Alphas melt.

I still haven't wholly forgiven them yet. Even Alastor is still on thin ice, but he is trying. He found her like I asked, and that is why he gets to walk by Ella's other side as we take her hands and lead her through the doors.

She squeezes her eyes, bracing herself, and the moment we step inside, a cool wind blows down on her from the AC unit. "It's cold!"

I laugh. "It's just the air conditioning, Ella. It's fine."

She still won't open our eyes, and I nudge her gently. Finally, she opens her lids, and her blue eyes expand the moment they find that huge warehouse-style shop.

"What in the…?”

She’s right. This place is fucking huge.

One aisle is filled with beds, and they are free to try out.

Ella and I can try a few… I bet the shop assistants here have to deal with a lot of Omegas and their hormones.

Especially ones close to heat.

Some Omegas fall asleep on the beds. And sometimes they're not found until the next morning when the shop opens.

Kellen and Theo step in behind us, and I told them they were to keep three feet apart as punishment for Ella's abandonment.

Both Alphas still have a lot to prove. Ella didn't protest, but I do see the insecurity in her eyes whenever she sees me punishing them.

She still thinks she is an outsider, and I bet she expects Theo to break the silent act and show his true feelings once again.

However, the Alpha is strangely subservient. He gave up the title of pack lead, and poor Alastor didn't even get to fight for the position.

I can tell he's still pissed, and he keeps stealing glances behind his shoulder at the Alpha in question.

Theo keeps to the back of our party; he is quickly adapting to his new place in the pack, accepting that he is finally at the bottom of the pecking order.

After all, he proved that he was unfit to lead, and now he is punishing himself as a result.

While I appreciate that he has at least acknowledged his faults, I can't forgive him just yet.

Kellen is trembling with excitement, and I can tell that he is desperate to show Ella all the wonders of the world.

He was eager when he decorated my nest; he was the one who built it and now he wants to earn Ella's trust, proving that he can be the Alpha she deserves.

It gives me an idea. "Come along, let's try out some of the beds!"

Ella's eyes sparkle. "Beds?"

"That's right! Queen, king, emperor-sized. Beds big enough for an entire pack."

Her lip wobbles and there's no missing the sweet shine to her baby blues. "That sounds wonderful…"

"It is, and we're going to test them all! So, let's go!"

Taking her hand, I rush through the shop, calling out over my shoulder. "You three, I have a challenge for you. I want you to each pick out items that you find in the shop, ones that you think best suit Ella's personality, and… whoever wins gets to stay with us in the nest for the first night after it's built."

I should make it a competition. May as well play on their dominant sides.

They're always trying to outdo one another. Kellen has the biggest mugs in the kitchen for crying out loud and about those Viking horns. He needs to chuck some out.

We're not in freaking Asgard, idiot.

I say that because we need to make room for Ella's mugs.

Many sacrifices will have to be made.

Each Alpha steps up to the challenge. Alastor has that green glow in his eyes again, the one that hasn't let up since Theo handed him the position of pack lead, and Kellen is practically vibrating with anticipation.

Theo, however, is glum, and it's clear who the loser is going to be.

This is my first test. It doesn't matter what they bring back or how best they guess Ella's personality. All I want to see is their enthusiasm.

So, Theo best step up. I am already finding it hard to have faith in him again.

Finally, I yank Ella away, and she yelps as I rush her through the aisles toward the beds.

People jump out of our way, but they're mostly Alphas and other Omegas, so they get it.

The only Betas present are the employees of the shop, and one foul sales assistant snarls when we almost knock over her display of soft plushies.

When we make it to the first bed, I squeeze Ella's hand, then dive.

We bounce on the floor mattress for a few moments, laughing our heads off as the blood still pumps hot through our veins, and now I drag her closer, breathing in her hair as I keep her close.

I'm not sure if we are even allowed to sleep on the beds. I think the shop employees just gave up after a while.

I wonder what they have found over the years. These sheets have had to be changed numerous times, I bet.

Maybe Ella and I can dirty them again…

Like a pair of rebels, we hide under the blankets, wrapping ourselves up in each other's warmth, and we don't come out for some time.

The blankets are silk imported from Japan, and the pillows are made from various textiles.

But there is no need to rush.

Ella can take her time and pick what she likes later. Now, we will try out each bed and see which one has the best springs.

What one can handle two Omegas?

"I'd say this one," Ella whispers.

I smirk. "But we have others to test out."

She brushes a light orange curl away from my eyes, fixing my glasses. "I know, but any bed is perfect so long as you are with me, Brody. I still can't believe you are in front of me again. It's… been hard without you."

My chest caves at her confession, and I still hate myself for that night.

Sure, I may blame my Alphas, but I wasn’t exactly Prince Charming myself.

We all left Ella alone to fight off those protestors. She could have been killed.

And then we had the audacity to leave her out of the nest. It was despicable. Hence why from this day forward, she will always come first.

Her needs before mine. Even if I went into heat at this moment, I would not forsake her. Not again.

I sigh, bringing her closer as I nuzzle my nose with hers. "It's okay. All that matters is that we have each other again, Ella. You are not going anywhere again without me. Where you go, I go."

And I mean it. We don't need Alphas. At least ones that don't appreciate us.

We soon fall asleep on the bed and we must have been tired.

I don't think I have had a good night's sleep since she’s been gone, and I can see that the feeling is mutual.

So, I wrap my arms and legs around her, keeping her safe.

Just the two of us once again.

As it should be.
