Chapter Eight
MAYA
Maya stood at the edge of the Tallstrider settlement, wondering just what the heck she had gotten herself into. She didn't like taking care of her personal needs in the forest. And while bathing in a stream was kind of neat, it was also freezing cold, and she missed her body scrub. Not to mention she missed the internet, take out Chinese food, and the escape of a good binge watch. But then she looked over at Kael. He was risking his future by continuing to claim she was his mate. All that other stuff faded into the background and paled in comparison with the new feelings of love that threatened to burst her heart when she looked at him.
Asha approached her with a gentle smile that did little to calm Maya's nerves. "Maya," Asha began, her voice soft but carrying the authority of her position within the tribe, "to become a true member of the Tallstrider clan, you must complete three trials. These tests will prove your worth, your commitment, and your connection to our people."
Maya nodded, trying to project confidence she didn't quite feel. "I'm ready," she said, her voice only wavering slightly. "What's the first trial?"
Asha's eyes gleamed with a mixture of approval and concern. "The first is the Rite of Remembrance. It is perhaps the most important, for it will connect you to the very spirit of our clan."
As Asha explained the details of the trial, Maya felt a knot form in her stomach. A vision quest? Communing with ancestor spirits? It was so far removed from her world of facts, data, and tangible evidence. Yet, as she glanced over at Kael, who stood nearby with an encouraging smile, she knew she had to try.
"What do I need to do?" Maya asked.
"Follow me."
As they made their way deeper into the forest, Maya felt the eyes of the entire clan on her back. Some gazes were curious, others skeptical, and a few—like Ranak's—were openly hostile. She tried to push their judgment from her mind, focusing instead on the path ahead.
The sacred grove, when they reached it, took Maya's breath away. Ancient trees formed a natural circle, their branches intertwining overhead to create a canopy that filtered the sunlight into dappled patterns on the forest floor. At the center stood a massive, gnarled oak that pulsed with an otherworldly energy.
Asha led her to a flat stone at the base of the great oak. "Sit," she instructed, then began to prepare a small fire nearby. As Maya watched, Asha added various herbs and roots to a wooden bowl, grinding them into a paste with practiced movements.
"This mixture will help you enter the trance state," Asha explained as she worked. "It will open your mind to the spirit realm, allowing you to commune with our ancestors."
Maya nodded, her throat too dry to speak. As Asha continued her preparations, Maya noticed a flurry of movement at the edge of the grove. Ranak had arrived, his massive form radiating disapproval. He approached Asha, speaking in low, urgent tones that Maya couldn't quite make out.
Whatever Ranak said, Asha's response was firm and unyielding. The Bigfoot leader's face contorted with frustration, but he retreated, throwing one last glare in Maya's direction.
"What was that about?" Maya asked when Asha returned to her side.
Asha's expression was carefully neutral. "Nothing you need to concern yourself with. Focus on the trial ahead."
But as Asha handed Maya the bowl of herbal mixture, her eyes flickered briefly to where Ranak stood, watching. There was a tension in the air that hadn't been there before, and Maya couldn't shake the feeling that something was amiss.
But then she saw Kael and every bit of trepidation fled. He was here with her. Her mate. Her impossible one true love.
Taking a deep breath, Maya raised the bowl to her lips. The concoction was bitter and earthy, with an underlying sweetness that made her head spin almost immediately. As she drank, she heard Asha begin to chant in a language she didn't understand, the words seeming to resonate with the very trees around them.
The world began to blur at the edges, colors becoming more vivid even as shapes lost their definition. Maya felt as if she were floating, disconnected from her body. The last thing she saw before the physical world faded entirely was Kael's face, his green eyes filled with love and concern.
Then, she was elsewhere.
Maya found herself in a misty forest, far older and wilder than the one she had just left. The trees here were impossibly tall, their trunks wider than any she had ever seen. She could hear whispers on the wind, voices just beyond her understanding.
As she wandered through this ethereal landscape, figures began to emerge from the mist. They were Bigfoot, but unlike any Maya had seen before. These beings shimmered with an inner light, their eyes holding the wisdom of ages.
One of the spirits, a female with blue-streaked fur, approached Maya. When she spoke, her voice came from everywhere and nowhere at once.
"Why have you come, daughter of man?" the ancestor asked.
Maya swallowed hard, gathering her courage. "I seek to join the Tallstrider clan," she said, her voice sounding small in the vast, misty expanse. "I wish to prove my worth and my connection to your people."
The ancestor's eyes peered into Maya's very soul. "And what makes you think you are worthy? You, who are not of our blood?"
Before Maya could answer, the scene shifted. She was suddenly witnessing flashes of Bigfoot history—moments of joy, of sorrow, of triumph and tragedy. She saw the clan's struggles against an ever-encroaching human world, their fight to preserve their way of life.
The visions overwhelmed her, each one filling her with emotions that weren't her own. She felt the pain of loss, the warmth of community, the deep connection to the forest that was the lifeblood of the Bigfoot people.
Just as Maya thought she might lose herself in the flood of memories, she felt a familiar presence. Kael. Though she couldn't see him, she could feel his strength, his love, anchoring her in the chaotic swirl of the spirit realm.
Drawing on that connection, Maya found her voice. "I may not be of your blood," she said to the ancestor spirit, "but I have given my heart to one of your own, and in doing so, I have found a part of myself I never knew existed."
The blue-furred ancestor tilted her head, considering Maya's words. "Pretty words," she said, "but words alone are not enough. You must prove your understanding, your commitment."
The spirit waved her hand, and Maya saw a vision of the human world—of cities and technology, of the comforts and opportunities she had left behind. "This is the world you came from," the ancestor said. "A world that has often been at odds with ours. If you join our clan, you may never be able to return to this life. Are you willing to make that sacrifice?"
Maya felt a moment of vertigo as the weight of the decision pressed down on her. She thought of her career, her friends, the life she had built for herself. But then she thought of Kael, of the passion they had shared and the words that.
"Yes," Maya said, her voice firm and clear. "The human world will always be a part of me, but I've found something here with Kael that I never had before. I choose this life, this clan, this forest."
As the words left her mouth, Maya felt a surge of energy course through her. The ancestor spirits began to fade, but not before the blue-furred one spoke one last time.
"Remember this moment, Maya of the Tallstriders. Remember the choice you have made. In times of hardship, let it be your strength. I grant you the gift of our language."
With a rush of wind and a dizzying swirl of color, Maya felt herself being pulled back to the physical world. She gasped, her eyes flying open to find herself back in the sacred grove, the concerned faces of Asha and Kael hovering over her.
"Maya?" Kael's voice was thick with worry. "Are you all right?"
She nodded, still trying to process everything she had experienced. As she looked around, she saw that the entire clan had gathered, their expressions ranging from awe to disbelief to, in Ranak's case, barely concealed fury.
Asha helped Maya to her feet, a proud smile on her face. "Tell us, child. What did you see?"
Taking a deep breath, Maya recounted her journey through the spirit realm. The words coming out of her mouth were guttural and foreign.
Asha gasped in delight.
Kael radiated pride.
Ranak scowled.
As Maya continued to speak in their language, she saw the clan's reactions shift. Many who had been skeptical now looked at her with newfound respect. Even some of the elders nodded approvingly as she described her interactions with the ancestor spirits.
When she finished, there was a moment of silence. Then Asha spoke, her voice ringing out clear and strong. "The ancestors have spoken. They have tested Maya and found her worthy."
Ranak's jaw clenched, but he said nothing and stormed off into the forest. Maya felt a pang of sadness at his continued hostility, but it was overshadowed by the warmth of Kael's arms as he enveloped her in a tight embrace.
"I knew you could do it," he said.
As the clan began to disperse, many stopping to offer Maya words of congratulations or encouragement, Asha approached the couple. "Rest now," she said gently. "You've earned it. But be prepared—the next trial will test you in a very different way."
Maya nodded, feeling a mixture of exhaustion and exhilaration. As she and Kael made their way back to their hidden cave, she felt weary pride. She had taken the first step towards truly becoming part of the Tallstrider clan.
"I burn for you, mate," Kael growled.
And even though every fiber of her being was tired, her blood began to heat, and a familiar wetness pooled at the juncture of her thighs. Kael stripped her of her clothes and guided her to their fur clad bed. He lay on his back and positioned her, so she straddled his face while turned to face his hard cock.
He tongue fucked her while she writhed in pleasure, the fur on his face caressing her clit and her folds until she was quivering with desire. With both hands stroking his massive cock, she bounced on his face eagerly, craving to feel him deeper inside her.
He devoured her hungrily. As she moaned in ecstasy, his fingers brushed against her sensitive clit and sent her into orbit. Gasping for air, she pumped his impressive length with both hands as she rode his face, craving the feeling of being completely filled by him. The intensity of their mate bond coursed through her body, building to a fever pitch as he expertly pleasured her.
His tongue danced and flicked inside her, skillfully exploring every inch of her wetness. His rough fur against the sensitive skin of her inner thighs sent shivers of pleasure through her. She moaned and arched her back, unable to control the waves of ecstasy that washed over her. Kael drove her to the brink, until she was aching for him.
Every movement shot sparks of pleasure through her body, bringing her closer and closer to the edge. He came first, spurting gallons, splashing cum over her breasts and stomach. Pitching her forward so she was on her hands and knees, Kael pushed his cock deep inside her. Maya screamed as her own orgasm shook through her.
It was primal, raw, and intense. As he moved within her, Maya could feel the forest itself around them, the trees and the earth humming with approval. It was as if the spirits of the forest had gathered to witness their union, to lend their strength and support to this new type of coupling.
He pounded into her. She was going to shake apart into a million pieces from the sheer joy of his body ramming into hers. Her pussy clenched and unclenched around him, matching his rhythm. He pumped into her with bruising force, each thrust claiming her more and more.
Her breasts bounced in time with their movements, and his growls filled the air, the sound of his pleasure mingling with the grunts and growls of the beast inside her as well. Kael's hands gripped her hips, moving her in sync with his body as he drove into her. Her second climax was building, the tension growing with each pulse of his cock.
With one final powerful thrust, Kael roared and came inside her, filling her completely. This pushed Maya over the edge, and waves of ecstasy crashed over her like a tidal wave, leaving her breathless and weak.
Kael pulled out of her, and she collapsed onto the fur lined bed, spent and shaking. He licked his lips, his eyes shining with a primal hunger, and she knew that he was as affected by their mating as she was.
"We are one," he said, his voice deep and rumbling. "The spirits have accepted you, and I could never be prouder." He leaned down and kissed her, his breath hot and heavy against her lips. Maya returned the kiss, their tongues entwining and mingling, tasting the remnants of each other's pleasure.
As they pulled apart, Maya smiled up at him, feeling more connected to Kael and the Tallstrider clan than ever before. She knew that there were still two trials left, but for now, she was content to bask in the afterglow of their lovemaking and the knowledge that she had truly found her place in this new world.
