Chapter Twenty
Sara woke up and turned to see Grant's side of the bed empty. When she checked the clock, she realized why. He'd probably been up for several hours already.
She sat up, wrapped her arms around her bent knees, and looked down at the three dogs on the floor on her side. Thor had come a long way since meeting her girls. They seemed to have brought out the puppy in him. He still shied away from most of the men, but he got better as time passed.
She was startled when the bedroom door opened, and Grant walked in, using his foot to close the door behind him. She eyed the tray in his hands.
"What are you doing?" she asked.
"It's our anniversary," he told her.
"Our what?" she said, shocked.
"We've been together six months."
She rolled her eyes and grinned. "You had me going. I thought I'd forgotten something."
Grant set the tray on the bed between them before undressing and getting back under the covers.
She looked over the array of food, and her mouth watered—the cook, Betty, had outdone herself again. There were eggs, toast, pancakes, sausage, bacon, and fruit. There were also glasses of orange juice.
He handed her a plate, and they started filling it. They sat back and enjoyed the breakfast, talking about the day ahead.
He took her plate when she was done and set the tray on the floor by the side of the bed.
She was looking out the window at the bright sunlight when he got her attention. She turned to see a small box in the palm of his hand. Right away, she knew it was a ring. They had talked about it a few times, but she thought they would wait. She guessed he'd been too impatient.
He opened it, showing her the three-carat diamond. "If you don't like it, we can exchange it."
She shook her head, smiled, and blinked back her tears. "No," she said and set her hand on his. "It's beautiful."
Grant got on his knees by the side of the bed. "Sara, I love you with all my heart, and I can't imagine my life without you. Would you do me the honor of becoming my wife?"
She couldn't hold back the tears anymore and fell into his arms, hugging him tightly.
"Yes! I love you so much."
They kissed for a long time before Grant lifted her back on the bed and slid the ring on her finger.
"It's perfect," she said.
He lifted her hand and kissed her knuckles. "You're perfect."
He turned and opened the drawer in his nightstand. "Wait, there's something else."
"Wait. I haven't gotten you anything," she complained.
"Agreeing to marry me is more than enough."
She took the envelope he handed her and opened it. She had to read the paper twice because she thought she'd not read it right.
Tears started flowing down her face again. "You're giving me Dream Cather?"
"Yeah. She's been yours from the beginning. I just made it official. I hope you still let me breed her, though," he said.
"Of course." She threw herself into his arms, almost knocking them out of bed. She kissed him with all the pent-up emotion that filled her.
An hour later, they lay next to each other, waiting for their breathing to even out.
"Grant. Thank you so much for everything. This is a day I'll remember for the rest of my life."
"Me, too, Sweetheart."
He kissed her sweetly on the lips. If she got any happier, she thought she'd burst, but she certainly wasn't going to complain about it.
She had found the one man that fit her perfectly, and it still amazed her that she got the chance to love a man like him. She'd remember to tell him every day how much she loved him and pictured them growing old together. It was a beautiful image she'd never forget.
