Chapter Eleven
With Cutler’s delicious body draped over him like a blanket, Gable toyed with Cutler’s wedding ring. Several times, he felt a smile touch Cutler’s lips against his neck. He hadn’t known there was this much happiness in the world until Cutler gave it to him by marrying him. Gable didn’t speak because he had too much to say that words couldn’t express. He had married his best friend, the greatest love of his life, and the knowledge overwhelmed him every day. Gable didn’t miss his job the way he expected. Everything had changed since falling for Cutler. He didn’t regret a damn thing.
Cutler’s phone chirped. A loud groan vibrated against his neck. “Why? Why does this always happen when we’re cuddling?”
Gable shook with laughter. “To be fair, we’re always cuddling.”
Cutler stretched for the phone while Gable enjoyed the show. He never tired of savoring Cutler’s nudity. “I’m getting too old for this shit.”
Gable’s gaze slid down Cutler’s tight body. “You don’t look too old to me.”
Cutler shot him a wry look, making Gable laugh harder.
“Where are we headed?” Gable asked, trying to drag Cutler’s thoughts away from his age. Since his attack, Cutler had refused to leave Gable alone while he worked. He had threatened to quit until Gable agreed to accompany him as a spotter. It gave Gable something to do and Cutler peace of mind. Gable couldn’t live with knowing they both had stopped doing what they could to make the world a safer place. It genuinely wasn’t that big of a change for him. Nights of hiding, playing at reconnaissance, took him back to his days as a SEAL. As his hand ran down Cutler’s bare hip, he wondered if Cutler was right, though. Maybe they were getting too old. The bed felt too good. Cutler’s body draping his made him lazy. He seriously considered quitting everything except this.
“False alarm. It’s your mom sending me a recipe she saw on Facebook.”
A bark of laughter burst from Gable. “I swear she never sleeps, and she loves you more than me.”
Cutler settled back down, keeping Gable warm. “Nah. She loves me because of how much she loves you.” He kissed Gable’s neck. “Thank you.”
“For what?”
He felt Cutler shrug. “For sharing her with me. I never had a mom. I never had anyone before you.”
God, it broke Gable’s heart when Cutler said things like that. “You never have to thank me for loving you. It’s the easiest thing I’ve ever done.” He kissed Cutler’s forehead. “Mom feels the same.”
The attention Cutler paid to his neck turned from sweet to toe-curling. Gable’s breathing changed. He heard the shift. Cutler obviously did too. “Let me know if you’re tired of me.”
“Never.” Goddamn, even to his ears, he sounded like a thirsty whore. He gave no fucks. Every moment with Cutler was like a dream. He planned to savor every single second until there was no breath left in him. This was his person. His husband. His soulmate. He wouldn’t trade Cutler for anything. Not the return of his job or to go back to the zero-pain living he had before his attack. Gable was ruined for anyone else. That was fine. This was all he needed.
