EPILOGUE

FIVE YEARS LATER

ALICE

“Are you sure?” Marcus asks from his position near the door.

“Yes.”

He advances into the room. “But how?”

I roll my eyes and toss my husband a look. “I would think a man your age would know how babies are made.”

His stunned look quickly transforms as he grins and waggles his brows. “Oh, that I do.”

Tossing the positive test on the counter, I go over and slip onto his lap. His arms immediately go around me and one hand gently cups my belly.

My still flabby belly since I just gave birth to our first child four months ago.

We’d started trying for children right after we got married four years ago.

And it just didn’t happen for us.

With Marcus’s injury, our first step was to check out his sperm count, and it was low. A blow to my husband, but one that wasn’t entirely unexpected. We decided to go with IUI and after three cycles that didn’t work, we took a break and had several serious conversations.

Our second IVF transfer produced our daughter Abagail.

We were open to another child maybe when Abby was one or two and naturally figured we’d go with IVF again. Guess that wasn’t needed.

“My boys can swim!” Marcus exclaims.

Laughing, I press a kiss to his lips and let out a tiny moan when his tongue sweeps into my mouth.

His kisses are still as sweet, gentle, and exciting as they were when we first met. Other than some more silver in Marcus’s hair, not much has changed with my husband in the years since then. He’s still gruff, sometimes rude, and absolutely the same man I fell in love with.

Since his house was already so well-customized for him, we decided to make it our home and had some modifications made to it for me. Mostly in the kitchen. Maybe it looks odd to some, but I love our his and hers counters and sinks.

Over my protests, though I didn’t protest that much, a second regular-height vanity was also added to our bedroom’s ensuite bathroom. It does make getting ready for bed easier.

Three years ago my boss Jerry decided to take early retirement. His job was offered to me, and I accepted. Juggling fertility treatments, pregnancy, and now motherhood as an IT director wasn’t easy. Honestly, I’m loving my six months maternity leave.

Obviously a bit too much going by that positive pregnancy test.

With baby number two on the way, I’m not sure if I’ll step down as director, ask for reduced hours, or what. Thankfully, I have time to figure that out.

Even better, I have the best person in the world by my side supporting me in every decision that I make. Grammy was correct. He is my match.

We may not be perfect, but together we have something amazing. And I wouldn’t trade it for easy or perfect any day.

Pulling back, Marcus’s eyes look deeply into mine. “I love you, Alice,” he says softly.

“I love you too,” I whisper, claiming his lips in another kiss sweeter than even the strawberry pie that we love.
