42. Nicholas

NICHOLAS

There was no good spot for us to land, which we knew going in. With one look toward the other side of the island, I saw Max landing. I quickly stood and grabbed the full-body harness, buckling it into place. FNG stood, grabbing his own and grinned at me.

"What are we doing?"

"I'm going in."

I snatched the cable and hooked myself to it. "Scottie, get me down there!"

"I'm going with you," FNG said, hurrying to get ready.

I signaled to Scottie and grabbed onto the cable as he hovered over where Raven was fighting with someone else. Cash eyed me, then nodded.

"Don't get dead."

"You should be worried about yourself. Scottie's flying."

He released the cable and I was quickly lowered to the ground below. My feet hadn't even touched it when the first guard came at me. I unhooked myself and spun with the cable, wrapping it around the man's neck. Another man came at me and I spun, kicking the gun out of his hand as he drew it.

I released the cable and ran at Raven, who was fighting off three men. She spun, kicking one man in the face as another grabbed her from behind. I watched in fascination as she flung herself backward, kicking another man coming at her, then tossed her body over the shoulder of the man holding her. I almost forgot how skilled she was.

"Raven!" I shouted.

She turned and glared at me. "You're late!"

"There was traffic," I said, pulling my gun from my holster and firing at the man running at her from behind.

"Did you stop for coffee too?" she grunted, jamming a knife into another man.

"No, it's too late in the day. I would get jittery if I had it now."

She ran flat out at me, and for a moment, I thought she was going to attack me. Instead, she flung herself at someone about to attack me. Maybe I should have been concerned that she was fighting off men for me, but all I could do was stare at the insane outfit she was wearing. While she was kicking ass, I was trying to figure out where she got an outfit that made her look like a female version of Indiana Jones.

"Hey, buddy," Fox grinned as he joined me in watching her move. "Man, she's awesome."

"She is."

"But what is she wearing?"

She ducked as a man swung at her. With her smaller frame, she quickly outmaneuvered him, pulling some of the very moves she used on me. I winced as she slammed her foot into the side of one man's knee, then slammed her knee into his junk. I discreetly moved my hand over my own, just in case she was feeling angry at all men.

"Where's Cash?" I asked Fox.

"Having a chat with Knight."

"You should tell him to get his ass down here."

"And miss her awesome dance fighting?" He took off and joined in, grabbing Raven's hand and spinning her around as he started singing. Not wanting to be dragged into his fucked up form of killing, I got to work taking out the guards quickly approaching from around the side of the house. We weren't meant to be here that long, but until we knew where Rafe was, we couldn't leave.

The harder we fought, the more men appeared. It was clear we were quickly being overrun. There was no way to fight them all off, and if we stayed, we would only be setting ourselves up for failure. I ran for Raven, fighting every step of the way to get to her. She wouldn't give up. Every man she came across, she fought with the same intensity, and I knew dragging her away from here would be harder than anything I'd done before.

"We have to go!" I shouted, firing off several shots at the men approaching me.

"Not a fucking chance in hell!"

I grabbed her by the arm, swinging her around to face me. The fire and anger I saw burning in her eyes was so bright and intense, I felt like it would burn me. But after a second, her eyes softened.

"I will not fucking lose you to this island. We're leaving now."

She looked around, watching Fox and FNG fight off the men approaching. She knew there was no way we could win this. There were too many of them.

"We need to go," I reiterated.

She pursed her lips, giving a tight nod. But as I started pulling her away, she yanked her arm out of my grip and bent over, adjusting the man's uniform who laid dead on the ground.

Sighing, I grabbed her arm and started running toward the helicopter.
