RAFE
I knew he was out there with his rifle.
I could feel his eyes on me.
The feeling was similar to being hunted, but with Cash, it was different. Instead of feeling hunted, a sense of peace washed over me. It had been that way since we were kids. Where one of us went, the other followed. Except, he wouldn't be able to go with me this time, and I was grateful for that. Despite our rivalry, Cash was still my brother and I would do anything to keep him safe.
"Get in there," Zavala said, shoving me into the back seat of the town car.
I fell in, wincing as the wound in my side pulled. I barely sat up when Zavala slammed his fist into the side of my head, making me want to vomit. I choked back the bile, reminding myself this was what I wanted. I refused to fight back like I normally would. That would not help me achieve my goals.
"Let's go!" Zavala ordered. He grabbed me by the hair, jerking me upright. "How did you know about my shipment?"
"You practically announced it," I muttered.
"Not this one. The one you stole from the shipping container."
I grinned wide at him, refusing to answer. "Are you worried you have a leak in your organization?"
"I will gut you like a fish if you don't answer my questions."
That time would come no matter what, but I needed to get on the island first. Knowing Zavala wouldn't want to stay on the mainland for long, I took my chances that silence was the best route.
"Maybe you'll be more willing to talk when you wake up."
I felt the prick of a needle at my neck and almost asked him to make sure he bandaged me up so I didn't bleed out in the meantime, but the drugs took an instant hold on me and melted into the darkness.
