RAFE

I sat in the corner of the gym, watching as everyone else danced. I hated school functions, but Cash wanted to go and I didn't want to stay home on a Saturday night. I pulled the flask from the inside of my jacket and took a swig before any of the teachers could see. I'd already had a few shots before I came, but the terrible music blaring from the speakers only made me want to drink more.

"Hey, Guy."

I looked up from under my cowboy hat at the girl standing in front of me. Missy Tompkins was just the girl next door. In a white floral dress and brown cowboy boots, she was exactly my brother's type. I didn't really have a specific type of girl. I liked them willing to get in my bed, and that was as far as I took it.

"Missy."

"Are you going to dance?"

I shook my head. "Nope."

She frowned, fidgeting as she stood in front of me. I knew what she wanted. She hoped I would dance with her, and then maybe I'd fall for her. That wasn't likely. I had plans for after high school, and none of them included girls tagging along.

"I was thinking ? —"

I stood and walked away from her, not caring in the slightest that she was still talking to me. I headed for the exit, ignoring the looks from the teachers as I passed. None of them liked me, but I didn't like them either. I was here for one reason. I needed an education to make my plans a reality.

There was a tree at the far end of the school, completely cloaked in darkness. I headed over there to wait for Cash to finally realize that this dance was nothing more than a waste of time. Leaning back against the tree, I sat on my ass and let my hat hang over my eyes. I listened to the chirping of the crickets and wished high school could finally be over so I could move out of this small town with its shallow people.

I must have dozed off because the next thing I heard was rustling and a muffled scream. Sitting up, I looked around in the dark, trying to pinpoint where the sound was coming from. Another muffled scream came from the side of the building. I was on my feet seconds later, moving quickly to the sounds. As I got closer, I recognized the noises being made, but the cries were not something that was supposed to accompany the sounds of pleasure.

I didn't stop as I rushed through the bushes to the side of the building, tearing the man off the girl on the ground. I held him by the shirt as the girl shifted, trying to cover herself. She cowered back against the building, and it was only when I saw the fabric of her dress and the brown cowboy boots that I realized who it was.

"Missy."

She looked up at me, her cheeks stained from the mascara running from her eyes. Torment and fear stared back at me, and for the first time in my near-adult life, I wanted to kill someone. I slowly turned and faced the man still in my grip.

Check that. Boy.

The fucking football star—Chad fucking Willis.

"Let me go, man!"

I gripped his shirt tighter, pulling him to me. "What the fuck did you do?"

"Hey, she wanted it, man. You know how it is."

I got in his face as anger coursed through me. "Did you just say she wanted it?"

"She was practically begging me for it on the dance floor. You should have seen the way she was moving. No girl dances like that unless she wants to get fucked."

I heard Missy's cries grow louder as she made herself smaller next to the building. It didn't matter how Missy was dancing. It was clear that she was terrified and that she most definitely did not want it.

I saw my brother walk up to us. "Guy, what's going on?"

But I couldn't tear my eyes off Missy. If only I had stayed and talked to her…maybe none of this would have happened.

"Guy…"

"Take Missy and get her cleaned up."

"What?"

"Take Missy," I bit out. "I'll deal with this asshole."

"Guy—don't do something you'll regret."

I turned and faced Chad again, my rage growing by the second. "I won't regret a single fucking thing."

I shoved him from behind into the darkness. He stumbled and fell to the ground, then rolled over and tried to crawl backward away from me.

"What are you doing?"

"I'm going to make you pay for what you did."

"You can't touch me," he spat. "My dad's the police chief."

I grinned at him, feeling a sense of calm wash over me as I thought of everything I would do to him. "All that means is you should know better."

As I stalked toward him, he continued to back up, getting further and further from any help. I knew Cash was still there, watching me as if he already knew what was going to happen. Maybe he did. Maybe this part of me was always buried deep down inside. There was nothing more I wanted right now than to make this kid bleed and watch as he begged for his life.

Like Missy had begged him to stop.

I could still hear her cries. They weren't pleasurable. She was terrified and this asshole didn't care. He only wanted one thing, and he would do anything to get it. I grabbed him by the shirt and slammed my fist into his face. The first hit felt good, but it was the second hit that unleashed something inside me. Over and over, I let my anger out on this kid. He cried out for his dad. He begged me to stop, but it was only when Cash pulled me off him that I finally relented. My chest was heaving and my hands were shaking from the anger rolling off me.

"What the hell is going on here?"

"It's the chief," Cash whispered. "Don't say a fucking thing."

I nodded as the chief stomped over to his son, bending down to get a closer look at him.

"Who did this?"

"I did."

"Keep your mouth shut," Cash hissed.

I stepped forward, taking responsibility for my actions. I didn't run from a fight, and I would never back down when some punk kid thought he could get away with the shit he just pulled. "I beat his ass."

The chief stood, staring at me with murder in his eyes. "You don't know who you're messing with."

"I do. I don't give a fuck. I walked up on your son raping a girl."

"Bullshit."

"Missy Tompkins. Her dress was torn and your piece of shit son was holding her down. She was crying and begging for him to stop. And do you know what he said to me? She wanted it."

The chief walked over to me, getting in my face. "You'll keep your mouth shut if you know what's good for you."

A slow smile spread across my face. "See, I've never been very good at doing what's good for me. But defending a girl who didn't want your son between her legs…I'll gladly stand up for her and tell the whole fucking world just what a piece of shit your son is."

The chief stepped back, pulling out his cuffs. "Guy Owens, you're under arrest for assault…"

I listened as he read me my rights, all the while slapping the cuffs on me. I smiled as he jerked me around, proving he was the big man up against a kid. Cash told me he would call Dad and get me out, but I wasn't concerned about it. I did what was right, and this asshole was going down. I didn't care how long it took or what I had to do.

He didn't care that his own son had assaulted a young girl. All he cared about was putting me in my place. The system didn't work. The chief was corrupt, and the only way to ensure people had their freedom and were judged fairly was by taking down those who sought to live above the law.

One day, this asshole would be removed from his job.

One day, he would pay for the sins he allowed his son to get away with.

And when that day came, I would be there smiling as he was cuffed and dragged off to jail.
