Epilogue

Two years later

The woman behind the desk at the front of the Ankara Embassy's private offices stood and walked around to the entrance. "Madame Ambassador, what a pleasure it is to welcome you." She held out her hand. "I'm Mrs. Serife. And Leeland." She put her hand to her chest. "My apologies, Mr. Kesling."

"Leeland. Or Nomad. It's so good to see you again, Mrs. Serife," Nomad smiled.

"I received your letter after your last visit to the embassy. I am so grateful that you solved that puzzle for me. You were so familiar, but I simply couldn't put my finger on it." She turned to Ana?s. "I knew your husband when he was a five-year-old boy. Just the sweetest, gentlest child. He loved soft things, so I'd bring my Angora rabbit for him to sit and play with on rainy days. They were very good friends." She focused on Nomad's face. "The eyepatch is new. And somehow dashing."

"My wife and I were in an automobile accident in Morocco." He put his hand on the back of Anaiis's wheelchair. "It was the compass needle that turned our life around one-eighty."

Mrs. Serife nodded gravely. "You had to leave the military?"

"I chose to," Nomad said. I could have stayed in and worked out of the Pentagon, but it's not a good fit for me. And, of course, Ana?s, after she was healthy and wanted to be back in this region that she loves so much, was offered the ambassadorship—a well-deserved gesture of gratitude from our administration—and she decided to accept the position."

"Well, I can't tell you how delighted I am," Mrs. Serife said. "At your request, we've asked the introductions be put on hold until tomorrow. Your visitors have arrived already, Ambassador Rousseau. A Ms. Johnna White and a Mr. John Green."

"Thank you," Ana?s said. "But while they were my colleagues, they came to speak with my husband. Nomad works for the State Department now, just as his father did back in the day."
