Chapter 16 Choosing Sides

(Kael)

I crouched behind a large boulder, my eyes fixed on the heavily guarded entrance of Aethel. The palace loomed ahead, its dark spires piercing the night sky. [MN73]

I had told the rebels to stay behind, but as I scouted for a way in without being seen, I heard soft footsteps beside me. I turned, ready to confront whoever had followed me, and saw Lyra and the rebels.

"What are you doing here?" I hissed, trying to keep my voice low. "I told you to stay back."

Lyra grinned, her eyes gleaming with determination. "The guardians of Aeloria gave us magic so we moved as fast as you. We're here to help." [MN74]

I sighed, relief washing over me. "Fine. But we have to be quick and quiet. Follow my lead."

We moved swiftly and silently towards the entrance, the magic coursing through us giving us speed and agility. The guards were numerous, but we had the element of surprise.

I signaled to the rebels, and we spread out, disabling the guards one by one. Lyra took down one with a swift blow to the head, while I incapacitated another with a precise strike to his knee. The rebels moved efficiently; their movements synchronized with mine.

As we approached the entrance, I whispered, "Now."

We stormed the gate, taking down the remaining guards with swift, silent strikes. The path was clear. We hurried inside, moving through the dark corridors of the palace, our senses heightened by the urgency of our mission.

We navigated the palace with practiced stealth, avoiding traps and ambushes. The corridors twisted and turned, but the layout was familiar enough from my time as a captain. We encountered several patrols, but the rebels and I dispatched them quickly and quietly, leaving no room for alarm.

"We're getting close," I murmured to Lyra, my heart pounding with anticipation.

She nodded, her eyes scanning the shadows. "Stay sharp. Corvus will be expecting us."

We reached a large, ornate door, guarded by two heavily armed soldiers. I motioned for the rebels to spread out. On my signal, we attacked. The guards barely had time to react before we overwhelmed them. [MN75]

The door creaked open, revealing a dimly lit corridor leading to a small palace courtyard. I knew Elara was there .

"We're almost there," I whispered, my voice filled with determination.

We burst into the open space, finding Elara standing in the center, her arms raised to defend herself. Her eyes widened in shock and relief as she saw us. "Kael!" [MN76]

"Elara!" I rushed to her side, cutting through the guards who tried to stop me. I pulled her into a tight embrace, feeling her warmth and strength.

"We need to get out of here," I said urgently, my hand gripping hers.

Before we could move, a door at the far end of the chamber swung open, revealing Corvus and Emperor Draven. Draven's eyes gleamed with malice, his thin lips curling into a sinister smile.

"The traitor arrives just in time to face his destiny."

Draven stepped forward; his small frame dwarfed by the oversized throne behind him. [MN77] "Well done, Corvus. As for you, Kael, your defiance ends here."

I tightened my grip on my sword, my eyes locked on Corvus. "You won't win."

Elara stepped beside me, her hands glowing with magical energy. "Together, we can defeat them."

Corvus laughed, raising his hands to summon dark magic. "Let's see you try."

The battle erupted, our combined powers clashing with Corvus and Draven's dark magic. The runes pulsed faintly on the walls, their suppressive magic still dampening Elara's powers and my strength.

As I fought off another band of guards, my mind raced to find a way to disable the runes. I remembered something I'd heard in the encampments once. The runes were linked by a network of magical veins, and if disrupted at a critical point, their power could be nullified.

I scanned the room, looking for the focal point of the runes' magic. My eyes settled on a particularly intricate rune etched into the floor in the center of the room.

With one hard roll, I came to stop as I pulled out my dagger and struck through the rune, breaking the lines and severing the connection. The room pulsed with a sudden surge of energy as the entire pattern was ruined.

I felt a wave of power washover me, my abilities flooding back with a renewed force. I could feel the strength of my dire bear form returning, and my senses sharpened to their supernatural clarity.

I glanced at Elara and our eyes met in understanding. She nodded and with a firm shake of her hand, she unleashed a surge of power at the enemy guards.

Elara's control over the earth and [MN78] my strength as a dire bear shifter created a formidable force. The rebels joined the fight, their movements swift and precise.

Corvus's magic lashed out, but Elara countered with blasts of stone and earth, deflecting his attacks. Draven attempted to cast a spell, but I charged at him, disrupting his concentration with a powerful blow.

The chamber shook with the force of our battle, the walls cracking and the floor rumbling beneath us. Corvus's confidence wavered as he realized we were a match for his dark powers.

"Give up, Corvus," I shouted, slashing at him with my sword. "Your reign of terror ends here."

Draven's eyes widened with fear as Elara summoned a massive boulder, hurling it towards him. He barely managed to dodge, his composure cracking.

"Enough!" Draven shouted, holding up his hands. "You win this time. Go, take your rebels and leave Aethel."

I glanced at Elara. We had won this battle, but I knew the war was far from over. "Let's get out of here."

We told the rebels to head out of Aethel, guiding them towards the exit. As we reached the city gates, ready to leave, Corvus appeared, his eyes burning with rage. [MN79]

"You're not going anywhere, Kael," he snarled.

He raised his hand, and an image appeared in the air—subjects surrounded by dark, swirling magic. "If you want these people to live, you'll stay."

Elara's eyes widened in horror. "Kael, don't."

My heart was heavy as I turned to her. "I have to. It's the only way to save them."

Corvus sneered, his voice dripping with malice. "Come now or they all die."

I stepped forward. "I'll give myself up. Just let them go."

Elara grabbed my arm, her eyes pleading. "Kael, please."

I pulled her into a tight embrace, whispering in her ear. "I love you, Elara. I'll find a way back to you. I promise."

With a final look at the rebels and Elara, I walked toward Corvus, ready to face whatever awaited me.

Corvus laughed nastily as he bound my hands. "You've made the right choice, Kael. Emperor Draven will be pleased."

I felt the weight of large chains being locked around my wrists, waist, and ankles. They were heavy, each link clinking ominously with my movements. A guard struck the back of my legs with a baton, and I stumbled to my knees, the cold stone floor scraping against my skin.

"Move, traitor. This time tomorrow, you will have gotten what you deserve," one of the guards barked, yanking on the chains. I struggled to my feet, my head held high despite the pain and humiliation.

They dragged me through dimly lit corridors, the air thick with the stench of damp and decay. [MN80] The journey felt endless, each step echoing through the halls until we reached a dark, foreboding dungeon.

The gate creaked open, and I was shoved inside, the chains clattering against the floor as the gate slammed shut behind me.

Defeated, I slumped against the wall, my mind racing with thoughts of Elara and the rebels. I had done this to protect them, but now, trapped and powerless, doubt crept into my heart.

Suddenly, a voice pierced the darkness. "Kael, come back to me. I need you, Guardian dire bear. I cannot do this without you."

Elara's voice was filled with anguish, her words echoing through my mind. I could feel her desperation, her tears, her pain. She was weeping, begging me to return to her. The intensity of her emotions surged through me, igniting something deep within.

"No," I whispered, feeling a primal force awakening inside me. "I won't leave you."

My muscles tensed, my breath quickening. The bear within me roared, pushing against the confines of my human form.

I let it take over, the transformation swift and powerful. My body expanded, fur sprouting from my skin, claws extending from my fingers. The chains snapped, unable to contain the sheer force of my shift.

With a mighty roar, I pulled the gate free from its hinges, the metal twisting and groaning under my strength. The guards rushed toward me, their faces pale with fear. I swatted them aside with a swipe of my massive paw, their bodies flying through the air.

I charged through the palace, the corridors a blur as I made my way back to the surface. The desire to reunite with Elara and protect her fueled my every step. I burst through the city, leaving chaos in my wake. [MN81]

As I reached the edge of the forest, I shifted back to my human form, my breaths ragged. I ran through the trees, my heart pounding with hope.

Finally, I emerged at the clearing leading into Aeloria. I found Elara, the subjects, and the rebels were gathered. Elara stood [MN82] at the center, her face etched with worry. When she saw me, her eyes widened with disbelief and joy.

"Kael!" she cried, rushing towards me.

I pulled her into my arms, holding her tightly as she laughed and cried, her tears soaking my shoulder. "I thought I lost you," she whispered, her voice trembling.

"I'm here," I replied, my own voice thick with emotion. "And I'll never leave you again."

The subjects and rebels surrounded us, their faces alight with relief and happiness.

Elara pulled back slightly, her hands cupping my face. "Thank you for coming back to me, Guardian dire bear." [MN83]

I smiled, pressing my forehead against hers. "Always, Elara. Always."

As we stood in the heart of Aeloria, surrounded by our friends and allies, I felt a profound sense of purpose. The journey was far from over, but with Elara by my side, I knew we could overcome anything. Our destiny awaited, and we were ready to face it together [MN84] .
