18. Rebel
For two days,I ran around in that damn jungle hunting for Evie. I just knew she was either captured or lying on the jungle floor somewhere. You could have knocked me over with a feather when I saw her in front of me limping. I rushed to her as fast as I could before she did something to bring attention to herself.
I kissed her forehead and held her a moment longer, murmuring in her ear so nobody could hear us. I texted Reaper and explained everything to him. He was already inside the gate. He went in when the horses entered. I want you to stay right here, and after we find Kylie, I'll come back and get you. What happened to your foot?"
"I twisted it," she whispered in my ear. Chills spread throughout my body. I shook them off, wanting her was for another time. "I want to stay with you."
I shook my head. "It will be too dangerous. Let us get Kylie, and then we'll leave."
"Promise to be careful. I could watch your back if I go with you," Evie said, clutching my arms.
"Evie, please promise me you will stay right here until I come back and get you," I said, trying to look into her eyes.
"I promise. Please find Kylie. They might keep her in with the horses because she cares for them. Check there first."
"Okay, stay here," I said more firmly. She nodded, and I told her to stay near the wall.
I met Reaper and Raider inside the gate. It was a small side gate, and we propped it open. "We are going to check the horse barn first; Evie thinks she might be in there." I pointed, and that meant someone was coming. We hurried and ducked out of sight. The men walked right in front of us and didn't see us; we were good at disappearing into the woodwork.
As we made our way to the barn, guards were everywhere. We went to the back and slipped inside as quietly as we could. The horses made a little noise, and then they stopped. We stayed in the shadows in case someone was inside guarding the horses. We saw the locked door, and Raider knocked on it.
"Get the fuck away from that door, or I will call Ruben, and I'm serious. I take care of the horses, and that is all I'm going to do."
"Is your name Kylie?" Raider whispered.
We could hear her move. "Who are you?"
"We're here to get you out of here. I'm going to break this lock," Raider said. He took something from his backpack and opened the lock in seconds. When we got inside, she was chained to the wall. I put my fingers to my lips, and Raider opened both locks that chained her to the wall. She had no shoes, and her clothes were hanging off her.
We hurried to the back wall, and I went outside first to ensure everything was clear. I saw a man walking toward us, and I closed the door and pushed against the wall. As soon as he was within reach, I covered his mouth and twisted his neck. He fell to the ground dead.
I opened the door and motioned for them to come out. We all stepped over the dead body and made our way to the side gate. I looked around as we left, keeping our eyes peeled to ensure nobody was around. I saw Mika and his men; Evie was with them. I blocked Kylie"s view.
"Listen carefully; Evie is with us," her hand flew to her mouth, and tears pooled in her eyes. "I don't want you saying anything when you see her. We don't have time for any greetings we can do that later." She nodded, and then I moved so the sisters could see each other. Both of them had tears flowing down their face. We took off. I saw Evie limping. I picked her up and carried her as we hurried to the vehicles.
Nobody spoke; we had at least two miles before reaching the vehicles. When I looked back at how Kylie was doing, Raider carried her as she silently cried into his shoulder.
We had to stop because Mika's man hadn't come to tell us it was all clear. Reaper ran up to check, and then both came back. While we waited, I saw Evie and Kylie reach out and hold hands.
When we reached the vehicles, Kylie and Evie sat hugging each other, but they still didn't speak. They didn't talk until we reached Mika's home. Bart was there waiting for us. We didn't waste time in Mexico; we got our stuff and left.
"I've been so scared. I think I'll be scared until I die," Kylie whispered to Evie. "At first, they were going to sell me to men, and then when that bastard"s horse got sick, I helped it get better, and he kept me there to care for his horses. He kept me chained the entire time, except when I was with his horse. His horses didn't like the chains."
"That bastard, he had all those guards; he didn't have to keep you chained," Evie said.
"He did it because I tried escaping three times. He always beat me, so I wouldn't think about leaving again. Then I heard him talking to his men, and he said as soon as he could find another veterinarian to kidnap, they could have me. How are mom and dad?"
"They are at Rebel and Reaper's home. Mom had a heart attack, and Dad lost his job because he had to take care of her. I sold Grandma's house so I could pay off their home, so they had a roof over their head. I lost my job for not going in. Every day, I was with the homeless drug addicts on the streets of New York City, trying to find someone who knew where the cartel took you."
"What? How the hell did all this happen?" Kylie asked, shocked.
"Because you were kidnapped, and our lives went to hell. How could we go on with our lives without knowing how you were? Our lives fell apart, and I had to hunt for you because Dad had to stay with Mom."
I saw more tears fall from Evie and Kyie's eyes. I had a feeling that the trip home would be full of tears. "Let me see your foot, Evie," I said. She held her foot up without questioning me. "Tell me what happened."
"It was horrible. I heard Mika and his men talking about where Kylie was. I don't usually get lost, but I was so turned around that I doubted myself. Plus, I forgot to take water and food. Two days in that jungle, I heard something coming."
"I ran around until I found a tree I could climb. I went high, so the foliage blocked me from view. That's when I saw the horses go by. I stayed there until it was dark. I was going to stay up there longer, but a massive snake spotted me for dinner, and I got the heck out of there. I knew I was close to Kylie, so I ran and twisted my foot in a hole. The good thing was I found a mango tree. You found me right after that," Evie replied. I saw her eyes start to shut, and I wrapped her foot. I looked over at Kylie.
"Is there anything you want to tell me?"
"I don't even know who you are."
"My name is Dash Bellmont. We are the Delta Force Guardians. My Delta Force name is Rebel. Knox Bellmont is my brother. His Delta Force name is Reaper; he's flying the plane with Raider, that's his Delta Force name. His name is Gideon Oswald; we were all in the service together. Then we started our security business."
"Is it okay if I sleep?" Kylie asked.
"Of course it is," I said. After a while, my eyes closed, too.
