I couldn't think. All I could do was pray they weren't hurting Evie. My phone rang, and I picked it up without looking at the number. "Hello," I said.
"Hey, Dash. He let me call you to let you know I'm not mistreated. He's trying to figure out what to do with me."
"Sweetheart put him on the phone," I said. I waited a moment and nothing. I could hear him tell her to hang up. "No, don't hang up. I'll find you. Do the cartel have you? Are you in the United States?"
"No, I can't talk anymore. Goodbye, Dash."
"Goodbye, Evie." I stared at the phone until Reaper demanded to know what she said.
"She said she's not mistreated, and the cartel doesn't have her. So that means the mafia has her. She said he's trying to figure out what to do with her."
"What the fuck does that mean?"
"How the hell do I know? At least he let her call us. I called the Phone company and asked if they could tell us where the call came from. I waited for a while, and then she returned and said it was a burner phone, and they couldn't find out where it came from. But they thought it was in another country.
"I'm going to Mexico," I said, heading to my room to pack a bag.
"You don't even know where to go," Reaper said, following me, "and aren't you forgetting someone?"
"No, I'm not forgetting her. I'll take her to Benni. She will watch Hannah for me because I'll tell her I'll trade babysitting with her. I need to calm down so I don't scare my baby."
"Benni has four sisters, so she doesn't need to bargain for a babysitter. I'll call her right now; I'm going with you."
"That"s good. I'm sure I'll need someone with me. I'll call Benni, and you can call Raider; he can go with us. We'll take our plane. That way, we'll wear our fatigues and not have to walk through customs."
"We are going there to retrieve Evie, and if I get shot doing it, I don't give a fuck. We have to get her back. She was our responsibility, and we let her down." I was pissed off, and I was determined to get Evie back.
Benni showed up to get Hannah. I didn't want to leave her, but I had to find Evie. God, I can't believe they took her from the front of our house. She should have been safe here. I wonder how they knew where she was.
"I hope you find her quick. Evie is so innocent; even though she hung out with the homeless in New York, she's still so innocent. I don't want them to harm her," Benni said. "I'll take good care of Hannah. We might even visit her grandma. I had a thought about Hannah's Grandma. Spartan and I wondered if she would like to live in Jaz's cabin. She's renting it out, and she could be around Hannah. Do you mind if I talk to her about it?"
"That would be wonderful if she moved here. She has no other family members except Hannah. Talk to her. Raider walked in and looked at me. "I'm ready," I looked at him; he was fully dressed in his Marine fatigues. Reaper entered the room, and I kissed my baby girl goodbye.
We landed on a private landing strip, and our friend was waiting for us. After greeting each other, we got down to business.
"Have you heard anything?" I asked.
"Reaper, the mafia guy, died, and his nephew took over. He's not as bad. His name is Mika; he doesn't use a last name. He's here in Mexico. So you were right; he's in Mexico, but why?"
"Do you know where he lives?" I asked.
"I'm working on that," Bart said, pulling into his driveway. "Let's go to the back, to the computer room. We can pull up everything about him and see where he lives."
"I wonder if Kylie is here somewhere," Raider said, "if she's still alive."
"I wondered the same thing," I said. "We know the cartel took her. She's a veterinarian, so maybe that saved her. If they can use her, they may not have drugged her. It's happened before. I read about a woman they took who was a doctor. They had her for three years before she was able to escape."
We worked until dinner time before we stopped looking for where he lived. I took out my laptop and kept looking. I didn't want to eat. I was going to get Evie back before something terrible happened to her.
"Here, I made you a sandwich," Reaper said, sitting beside me.
"I think if we knew his last name, we could find out where he lives. I'm looking at everything about his uncle, Reaper. His funeral should have his last name. Everyone has an obituary that would show his last name."
We worked until I had to stop and get some sleep. Reaper's shout had me sitting straight up in bed.
"Why are you shouting?"
"I have his last name," Reaper said. "You won't believe what it is."
"What is it?"
"His name is Deno Rossi. So the nephew must be Mika Rossi."
"Mika Rossi. Let's find that son of a bitch and get Evie back." It took all day to find where he was. We took Bart's helicopter and flew over some jungle before we spotted the property. Men were running around like they were looking for something or someone.
We landed the helicopter away from his property. Bart stayed with the helicopter; this wasn't his fight. We jogged to the property and walked through the gate. There was nobody there to question us. When they saw us, they froze before pointing their weapons at us. We held our hands up, but they could see we were also armed.
"We want to talk to Mika Rossi."
"I'm right here. What the fuck do you want? I really don't have time for this right now. I'm looking for someone. What are you guys anyway? Some kind of rebels?"
"We are the Delta Force Guardians and have come for Evie," I said.
"Yeah, maybe she should have hired another company to guard her. I pulled up and asked if she was waiting for a ride, and she explained she was waiting for her ride from Daisy so she could give the boys piano lessons. She talked like we've known each other for years."
"Where is she?" I roared.
"That's who we are trying to find. She heard me and a couple of others talking about where her sister Kylie was being held captive. This morning, Evie was gone. I explained to her that those were cartel men and it would be too dangerous for her to go around them. She didn't listen to a word I said. She must have snuck out as soon as everyone went to bed."
"Fuck. Where is Kylie?"
"We can't let you go alone. That compound is surrounded by guards; if Evie went there, they would already have her."
I didn't care for how he said Evie, and he knew it. I saw him smirk. I wanted to punch his face in for taking Evie, but I wasn't stupid. Ten men were standing behind us, loaded with guns.
"Let's go."
"We have to plan first," Reaper said. "We can't just charge in there and demand they give us Evie. We all know Evie won't leave without Kylie."
I nodded. "Okay, I'm going to call Bart, explain everything to him, and tell him he can leave," I said, taking out my phone.
