Chapter 7
SEVEN
T he Larkana Palace loomed before them, a breathtaking fusion of organic architecture and ethereal beauty. Towering spires of living wood intertwined with crystalline structures that seemed to capture and refract the light of Nova Aurora's twin suns. Zak couldn't help but smile as he watched Tiffany's eyes widen in awe, her lips parting in a silent gasp of wonder.
"Welcome to my home," he said, his deep voice tinged with pride. "I hope you'll find it to your liking."
Tiffany turned to him, her gray eyes sparkling with excitement. "It's... incredible. I've never seen anything like it."
Zak felt a surge of warmth in his chest at her obvious delight. He wanted to show her everything, to see that same look of wonder on her face as she experienced all the marvels his kingdom had to offer. But first, introductions were in order.
As they approached the palace entrance, two figures emerged to greet them. One was a regal woman with silver hair and golden amber eyes that matched Zak's own. The other was a towering man with dark skin and an imposing physique, his gray eyes scanning their surroundings with alert vigilance.
"Tiffany, Sia," Zak said, gesturing to the woman, "I'd like you to meet my mother, Queen Astra Larkana. And this," he nodded toward the man, "is Draven Ferxi, head of the Royal Guard and my closest friend."
Astra stepped forward, her smile warm and welcoming. "It's a pleasure to meet you both. We've been eagerly awaiting your arrival."
Tiffany gave a small curtsy, looking slightly uncertain. "It's an honor to meet you, Your Majesty."
Astra laughed, a musical sound that immediately put Tiffany at ease. "Please, call me Astra. We don't stand on ceremony here, especially not with friends."
As Astra turned to greet Sia, Zak noticed Draven's gaze lingering on the vivacious brunette. His friend's usually stoic expression had softened, a hint of a smile playing at the corners of his mouth. Interesting, Zak thought, filing that observation away for later.
"Gerri!" Astra's delighted exclamation drew Zak's attention. The silver-haired matchmaker had stepped forward, embracing Astra like an old friend. "It's been far too long, you sly fox. Still meddling in people's love lives, I see?"
Gerri's eyes twinkled with mischief. "Guilty as charged. Someone has to keep things interesting around here."
The two women fell into animated conversation, their laughter echoing through the palace courtyard. Zak couldn't help but smile at their easy camaraderie.
"Perhaps we should get you all settled in," he suggested, turning to Tiffany and Sia. "I'm sure you'd like to freshen up after your journey."
Tiffany nodded gratefully. "That would be wonderful, thank you."
Zak led the way into the palace, guiding Tiffany toward the guest wing. He'd specifically chosen a suite for her that was conveniently located down the hall from his own chambers. It was purely for security reasons, he told himself, ignoring the way his heart raced at the thought of her being so close.
As they walked, Zak found himself hyper-aware of Tiffany's presence beside him. The subtle scent of her perfume – something floral and light – teased his heightened senses. He longed to reach out and touch her, to pull her close and breathe her in. But he restrained himself, remembering Gerri's words of caution.
"Here we are," he said, opening the door to a spacious suite decorated in soft shades of green and gold. "I hope you'll be comfortable here."
Tiffany stepped inside, her eyes widening as she took in the luxurious furnishings and the breathtaking view of the forest visible through the large windows. "This is... wow. Are you sure this isn't some kind of royal suite?"
Zak chuckled. "All our guest accommodations are of the highest quality. Though I may have ensured you received one of the best views," he added with a wink.
A faint blush colored Tiffany's cheeks, and Zak felt a surge of satisfaction. He loved seeing that pink tinge on her skin, knowing he was the cause of it.
"I'll leave you to settle in," he said, reluctantly stepping back to the door. "Perhaps later I could give you a tour of the palace and grounds?"
Tiffany's face lit up. "I'd love that."
With a final smile, Zak left her to unpack, his mind already racing with plans for their tour. He wanted to show her everything, to see her eyes light up with wonder at each new discovery.
As he made his way back to the main hall, he found Draven waiting for him. His friend's usually stoic expression was marred by a slight frown.
"What is it?" Zak asked, immediately on alert.
Draven sighed. "Rickon's been causing trouble again. He's been spreading discontent among some of the other advisors, questioning your decision to bring humans into the kingdom."
Zak felt a surge of frustration. Rickon had been a thorn in his side since he'd taken the throne, constantly pushing back any attempts at progress or change. "What exactly is he saying?"
"The usual rhetoric," Draven replied. "That humans will dilute our culture, that they can't be trusted with our secrets. He's particularly upset about the idea of an Earth teacher educating our youth."
Zak clenched his fists, struggling to contain his anger. "Doesn't he understand that we need this? That our people need to learn about Earth if we're going to coexist peacefully?"
"I don't think he cares about peaceful coexistence," Draven said grimly. "He seems more interested in maintaining the status quo – with himself at the top of the hierarchy, of course."
Zak sighed, running a hand through his short black hair. "I'm starting to think it might be time to replace him. Find someone more... open-minded for the position."
Draven nodded in agreement. "It might cause some short-term unrest, but in the long run, it could be for the best."
As they discussed potential replacements for Rickon, a palace messenger approached, bowing low before Zak. "Your Majesty, I bring news. Your cousin, Lord Grixxar, has announced his intention to visit the palace next week."
Zak felt a headache beginning to form behind his eyes. Grixxar was not a person he wanted to deal with right now. His cousin had always believed he should be king, and he never missed an opportunity to undermine Zak's authority.
"Thank you," he said to the messenger, dismissing him with a nod. Once they were alone again, he turned to Draven. "This is the last thing I need right now. I wanted to focus on helping Tiffany adjust, on showing her the kingdom..."
"On romancing her, you mean," Draven said with a knowing smirk.
Zak shot him a half-hearted glare. "I'm trying to be... subtle about it."
Draven's laughter echoed through the hall. "Subtle? You? My friend, I've seen you staring at her like a starving man eyeing a feast. There's nothing subtle about it."
Before Zak could retort, Gerri appeared, her blue eyes twinkling with amusement. "He's right, you know. Subtlety isn't exactly your strong suit, Your Majesty."
Zak sighed, knowing when he was outnumbered. "I'm trying to follow your advice, Gerri. To take things slow, to let her get to know me."
Gerri's expression softened. "And that's good. But remember, Zakhar – Tiffany's human. She doesn't understand the concept of fated mates the way you do. You need to give her time to develop feelings for you naturally."
"I know," Zak said, frustration evident in his voice. "But it's... difficult. Every instinct I have is screaming at me to claim her, to make her mine."
"And that's exactly why you need to resist those instincts," Gerri said firmly. "Tiffany's not just some prize to be claimed. She's a person with her own thoughts, feelings, and desires. You need to get to know her – the real her – and let her get to know you too."
Zak nodded, knowing Gerri was right. "So what do you suggest?"
"Take her sightseeing," Gerri said with a smile. "Show her the wonders of your kingdom. Let her see the man behind the crown. And most importantly, ask her how she feels about things. Don't assume you know what she wants or needs."
"That's good advice," Draven chimed in. "And maybe I could... show Sia around as well?" he added, trying and failing to sound casual.
Gerri's grin widened. "I think that's an excellent idea. Now, if you'll excuse me, I have some catching up to do with Queen Astra."
As Gerri departed, Zak turned to Draven with a raised eyebrow. "Sia, huh?"
Draven's dark skin flushed slightly. "She seems... interesting. That's all."
Zak clapped his friend on the shoulder, laughing. "Whatever you say, my friend. Whatever you say."
With renewed determination, Zak set off to prepare for his tour with Tiffany. He was going to show her the very best of his kingdom – and hopefully, in the process, the best of himself as well.
A few hours later, Zak found himself leading Tiffany through the palace gardens, his heart racing every time she gasped in delight at a new discovery. The gardens were a riot of color and scents.
"This is incredible," Tiffany breathed, reaching out to touch a flower that changed color at her touch. "I've never seen anything like it."
Zak smiled, enjoying her wonder. "That's a mood blossom. It changes color based on the emotions of whoever touches it. Right now, it's a bright yellow – a sign of joy and excitement."
Tiffany looked up at him, her gray eyes sparkling. "You certainly know a lot about flowers for a warrior king," she teased.
Zak felt a warmth spread through his chest at her playful tone. "There's a lot you don't know about me yet, Miss Whitlock," he said, his voice low and slightly husky. "I hope you'll give me the chance to show you."
A faint blush colored Tiffany's cheeks, and Zak caught the slight quickening of her heartbeat. The scent of her arousal, subtle but unmistakable to his heightened senses, made his own pulse race.
Clearing his throat, he gestured toward a path leading into the forest. "Would you like to see more? There's a waterfall not far from here I think you might enjoy."
Tiffany nodded eagerly, and they set off down the path. As they walked, Zak found himself opening up to her in a way he rarely did with anyone. He told her about growing up in the palace and the pressures of being groomed for kingship from a young age. In turn, she shared stories of her life on Earth, her passion for teaching, and her sometimes-strained relationship with her family.
"It sounds like we both know a thing or two about living up to expectations," Tiffany said as they reached the waterfall. The cascading water glowed with bioluminescent algae, casting a soft blue light over the clearing.
Zak nodded, watching the play of light across Tiffany's features. "It's not always easy, is it? Balancing duty with personal desires."
"No," Tiffany agreed softly. "It's not."
For a moment, they stood in companionable silence, watching the glowing water. Zak longed to pull her close, to tell her that she was his mate, his destiny. But Gerri's words echoed in his mind, reminding him to take things slow.
Instead, he turned to her with a smile. "So, what do you think of Nova Aurora so far? Everything you imagined?"
