Chapter 15
FIFTEEN
T iffany stirred awake, her eyes fluttering open to the soft golden light of Nova Aurora's twin suns filtering through the gossamer curtains. She found herself cocooned in warmth, Zak's strong arms wrapped around her, his steady breath tickling the nape of her neck. A couple weeks had passed since her arrival on this alien world, and yet waking up next to the panther king still sent a thrill through her.
Two days had passed since her attack and now she was healed and feeling perfect again. If only she could figure out who the man was. She racked her brain trying to think of why he attacked her.
As she shifted slightly, a low rumble caught her attention. At the foot of the bed, Nyx's emerald eyes met hers, watchful and alert. The panther's tail swished back and forth, his gaze never leaving Tiffany as she carefully extricated herself from Zak's embrace.
"Good morning to you too, Nyx," Tiffany whispered, her voice still husky with sleep. She padded across the plush carpet, heading for the en suite bathroom. To her amusement, Nyx rose and followed, positioning himself just outside the door.
As she went through her morning routine, Tiffany couldn't help but marvel at the changes in Nyx's behavior over the past few days. The panther had always been friendly, but ever since her attack, he'd become her constant shadow, vigilant and protective.
Emerging from the bathroom, Tiffany found Zak awake, propped up on one elbow and watching her with a soft smile. "Good morning, beautiful," he murmured, his golden amber eyes warm with affection.
Tiffany's heart skipped a beat. Would she ever get used to the way he looked at her? "Morning, handsome," she replied, crossing the room to press a kiss to his lips. "Sleep well?"
"Always when I'm with you," Zak said, pulling her back onto the bed for a deeper kiss.
Nyx chose that moment to leap onto the bed, wedging himself between them with a disgruntled huff. Tiffany burst out laughing at the panther's antics while Zak groaned in mock frustration.
"I think someone's jealous," Tiffany teased, scratching Nyx behind the ears. The panther leaned into her touch, purring contentedly.
Zak shook his head, amusement dancing in his eyes. "He's certainly taken quite a liking to you. Not that I can blame him."
As they prepared for the day, Nyx remained close to Tiffany, his watchful gaze never straying far. Even as they made their way to the palace gardens for breakfast, the panther stayed by her side, occasionally brushing against her leg as if to reassure himself of her presence.
The gardens were a riot of color and fragrance, exotic flowers blooming in every hue imaginable. Tiffany and Zak settled at a small table nestled among the foliage, a spread of Nova Auroran delicacies laid out before them.
"So," Tiffany said, popping a piece of star-shaped fruit into her mouth, "what's on the royal agenda for today?"
Zak sighed, a hint of weariness creeping into his expression. "Another council meeting, I'm afraid. Rickon has been pushing for stricter border controls, and I need to address his concerns without alienating our neighboring kingdoms."
Tiffany reached across the table, squeezing his hand gently. "That sounds stressful. Is there anything I can do to help?"
The gratitude in Zak's eyes made her heart swell. "Your support means more than you know, Tiffany. Just having you here, being able to talk to you about these things... it helps immensely."
They fell into an easy conversation, discussing the intricacies of Nova Auroran politics and Tiffany's plans for her next lesson with the young shifters. As they talked, Tiffany marveled at how natural it felt, sharing the weight of Zak's responsibilities. She found herself offering suggestions, her teacher's mind working to find creative solutions to the kingdom's challenges.
"You know," Zak said, a note of wonder in his voice, "I've never had anyone I could discuss these matters with so openly. My advisors, they... well, they have their own agendas. But with you, I can just be myself."
Tiffany's smile lit up her face. "I'm glad I can help. And for what it's worth, I think you're doing an amazing job. Running a kingdom can't be easy, especially with all the changes you're trying to implement."
Zak's smile was tinged with both pride and uncertainty. "I hope you're right. Sometimes I worry that I'm not living up to my father's legacy, that I'm letting my people down."
"Hey," Tiffany said softly, moving to kneel beside his chair. She took his face in her hands, forcing him to meet her gaze. "You are not letting anyone down. You're trying to make things better and move your kingdom forward. That takes courage, and I admire you for it."
For a moment, Zak's regal mask slipped, revealing the vulnerable man beneath. He leaned forward, resting his forehead against hers. "What did I do to deserve you?" he murmured.
Tiffany's heart swelled. She pressed a soft kiss to his lips, pouring all her support and affection into the gesture.
The moment was broken by Nyx's impatient meow. Tiffany laughed, pulling away to scratch the panther's chin. "All right, all right, you big baby. We haven't forgotten about you."
As the morning wore on, Tiffany found herself in the palace's sunroom, joining Sia, Gerri, and Queen Astra for tea. The atmosphere was light and jovial, a stark contrast to the weighty conversation she'd had with Zak earlier.
"So, Tiffany," Gerri said, her blue eyes twinkling, "how are you finding life as a potential alien queen? Any regrets about letting me drag you across the galaxy?"
Tiffany snorted into her tea. "Oh, you know, just your average Earth girl meets alien king, falls in love, and has to save a kingdom story. Nothing too out of the ordinary."
The room erupted in laughter, even the usually composed Queen Astra chuckling softly. As the mirth died down, Astra fixed Tiffany with a thoughtful gaze. "In all seriousness, my dear, how are you adjusting to the idea of potentially becoming queen? I know it must be quite overwhelming."
Tiffany's smile faltered slightly. "I... I'm not sure, to be honest. It's all happened so fast, and I'm not even sure if that's what Zak wants. I mean, we've only known each other for a short time."
Gerri raised an eyebrow. "Honey, I've been matchmaking for longer than you've been alive. Trust me when I say, what you and Zak have is special. And let's not forget, he's a shifter. They don't do things by halves when it comes to love."
Sia, who had been uncharacteristically quiet, piped up. "Yeah, Tiff. I mean, have you seen the way he looks at you? It's like you hung the moons or something."
As Gerri and Sia drifted into a conversation about Sia's blossoming romance with Draven, Astra moved to sit closer to Tiffany. "May I speak frankly with you, my dear?" she asked, her voice low and earnest.
Tiffany nodded, suddenly nervous. "Of course, Your Majesty."
Astra waved away the formality. "Please, call me Astra. We're practically family now." She paused, considering her words carefully. "Zak... he's always been a dedicated leader, but he's struggled with the personal aspects of his role. He needs a true partner, someone who will have his back as much as he has theirs."
Tiffany's throat tightened with emotion. "I want to be that for him," she admitted softly. "I'm just... I'm afraid I'm not enough. That I'll let him down or the kingdom down."
Astra reached out, taking Tiffany's hands in her own. "My dear, the very fact that you're worried about that tells me you're exactly what Zak needs. I've seen the way he is with you, how he lights up in your presence. He loves you, Tiffany. And I hope you'll give this relationship a real chance."
Tears pricked at the corners of Tiffany's eyes. She blinked them away, offering Astra a watery smile. "Thank you," she whispered. "I... I think I love him too."
The weight of the revelation settled over her, both terrifying and exhilarating. As she left the sunroom, her mind whirled with thoughts of Zak, of their future together, of the challenges they'd face.
Lost in thought, Tiffany didn't notice the hushed voices until she was nearly upon them. She froze, recognizing Rickon's clipped tones coming from around the corner.
"...cannot trust these Earthlings," Rickon said, his voice laced with disdain. "They're a threat to our way of life, to our very culture. And this... this teacher, she's filling our youth's heads with dangerous ideas."
Tiffany's blood ran cold. She'd known Rickon was wary of her presence, but to hear him speak so openly about his distrust...
Before she could retreat, Rickon rounded the corner, nearly colliding with her. His dark eyes narrowed as he took in her presence. "Miss Whitlock," he said, his tone icy. "Eavesdropping, are we?"
Tiffany straightened her spine, meeting his gaze squarely. "Not at all, Advisor Kynon. I was simply on my way to meet with Xakia about our next lesson. Though I must say, if you have concerns about my teaching methods, I'd be happy to discuss them with you directly."
Rickon's lip curled in a sneer. "I have no interest in discussing anything with you. Your presence here is temporary, and the sooner you return to your own world, the better."
Anger flared in Tiffany's chest. "I may be from Earth, Advisor Kynon, but I care deeply for this kingdom and its people. My only goal is to help bridge the gap between our worlds, to foster understanding and cooperation."
"Pretty words," Rickon scoffed. "But actions speak louder. And your actions, Miss Whitlock, are causing nothing but disruption and chaos."
Before Tiffany could retort, a low growl rumbled through the corridor. Nyx appeared at her side, his hackles raised as he glared at Rickon. The advisor took an involuntary step back, his face paling slightly.
"I believe this conversation is over," Tiffany said coolly. "Good day, Advisor Kynon."
As she walked away, Nyx at her heels, Tiffany's mind raced. Rickon's hostility was more than just xenophobia; there was a calculating edge to his words that set her on edge. She'd need to talk to Zak about this, to warn him of the potential threat within his own court.
Her meeting with Xakia provided a welcome distraction from her troubling encounter with Rickon. The two women quickly fell into an animated discussion about integrating Earth's history and culture into the Nova Auroran curriculum.
"I was thinking we could start with a comparative study," Tiffany explained, sketching out a rough timeline. "Show the parallels between Earth's major historical events and Nova Aurora's. It might help the students understand the similarities between our worlds despite the obvious differences."
Xakia nodded enthusiastically, her light blue eyes sparkling with excitement. "That's brilliant, Tiffany! And perhaps we could incorporate some hands-on activities? Maybe recreate some Earth customs or celebrations?"
As they bounced ideas back and forth, Tiffany found herself genuinely enjoying the creative process. It reminded her of why she'd fallen in love with teaching in the first place – the thrill of inspiring young minds, of opening up new worlds of knowledge.
"You know," Xakia said, a warm smile on her face, "I'm so glad Zak brought you here. Your ideas are truly revolutionary. I think you're going to make a real difference in our kingdom."
"I hope so. I just want to do right by these kids, to give them the tools they need to understand and appreciate both our worlds."
A comfortable silence fell between them as they continued working. After a while, Tiffany cleared her throat, a question that had been nagging at her for days finally bubbling to the surface.
"Xakia," she began hesitantly, "can I ask you something? About... about how matings work here?"
Xakia's expression softened with understanding. "Of course. What would you like to know?"
Tiffany took a deep breath, gathering her thoughts. "I guess... I'm just trying to understand the whole concept. On Earth, we don't have this instant recognition, this certainty that someone is meant for us. How does it work for shifters?"
Xakia's eyes took on a dreamy quality as she explained. "For us, finding our mate is... it's like coming home. The moment we see them, we know. It's as if a piece of ourselves that we didn't even know was missing suddenly slots into place. The bond that forms is unbreakable, a connection of mind, body, and soul."
Tiffany listened, fascinated and a little overwhelmed. "That sounds... intense."
Xakia nodded. "It is. But it's also the most beautiful, fulfilling experience a shifter can have. To find your other half, the one person in all the universe who completes you... it's indescribable."
A thought occurred to Tiffany, sending a chill down her spine. "What... what happens if a shifter's mate rejects them? Or if they can't be together for some reason?"
Xakia's expression turned somber. "It's... not good. A shifter who has found their mate but can't be with them... they'll never be truly happy with anyone else. In extreme cases, they might even..." she trailed off, her voice dropping to a whisper. "They might die of loneliness."
Tiffany's heart clenched painfully in her chest. "Die of loneliness?" she repeated, her voice barely audible.
Xakia nodded gravely. "It's rare, but it has happened. Once a shifter finds their mate, they're bound for life. To be separated from them, to be rejected by them... it's like losing a vital part of yourself."
The weight of Xakia's words settled over Tiffany like a heavy blanket. She thought of Zak, of the intensity of his gaze when he looked at her, the tenderness in his touch. Had she unknowingly held his life in her hands this entire time?
As she left Xakia's office, Tiffany's mind whirled with conflicting emotions. The depth of the mating bond both thrilled and terrified her. On Earth, relationships were a choice, something that grew and developed over time. But here, on Nova Aurora, it seemed that fate had already made that choice for her and Zak.
She found herself wandering into the palace gardens, seeking solace among the alien flora. The beauty that had captivated her upon arrival now seemed almost overwhelming, a reminder of how far from home she truly was.
Tiffany sank onto a bench, her fingers absently tracing the petals of a nearby flower. Could she do this? Could she commit to a life on an alien world, to a man she'd known for barely a week? And yet... the thought of leaving, of never seeing Zak again, made her chest ache with a pain she couldn't quite explain.
"You look lost in thought."
Zak's deep voice startled her out of her reverie. Tiffany looked up to find him standing before her, concern etched on his handsome features. Without a word, he sat beside her, pulling her into his arms.
