Chapter 29
CHAPTER TWENTY-NINE
Jordy
I’ve just finished a two-hour speed training session with Wade and, fresh out the shower, I’m in the locker room getting changed.
“Great session today. I needed that.” Wade stretches out his neck left and right. “How’s the knee?”
“Much better.” It hasn’t given me any problems for over two weeks. “It’s completely healed, but I get these weird phantom pains in it sometimes.”
“That’s your brain trying to keep you safe.” Wade pulls on his tee shirt.
“When all I want to do is skate faster than light.” More like twenty miles an hour, but when I move across the ice, it feels faster.
I slide my legs into my jeans at the same time a text message arrives. Wade looks down at my phone that’s lying on the bench and picks it up.
“Who’s Teacup?” Wade asks, grinning wickedly, reading the preview. “And she’s ready for you to come home, sir.”
Shit.
I snatch it out of his hand, which he must find amusing because it makes him laugh loudly.
“Are you hooking up with someone, sir?” He pokes fun. “And why the fuck am I just hearing about this? I’m offended.” He feigns annoyance, holding his hand over his heart.
“It’s new.”
“New?”
“Yeah.” I begin sweating again. I’m going to need another shower.
“Does Teacup have a name?”
“Yes. Teacup.” I’m giving myself a virtual high five for changing her name in my phone yesterday.
Wade lifts his wet towel off the bench and throws it at my face. “Smart prick.”
I throw it back. “Fuck off.” Heart racing, I open the text and read it to check if what Wade was saying was verbatim or he was fucking with me.
I’m ready for you to come home, sir.
Fuck me sideways. I didn’t think I was seeing her until New Year’s Eve.
“I need to go.”
“Sure, you do. The faster you get out of here, the less time you have to talk to me and the fewer questions I will ask.”
“I won’t answer any of them.” I smirk, zip up my jeans, pull on my Henley, and stuff my feet into my boots.
“Hell, I've never seen you move so fast. She must be someone special.” He folds his arms across his chest and stands wide, waiting for me to say something.
I stop rushing and pull my jacket off the hook inside my locker, then turn to him. “I think she’s the one. Or she could be something truly special.” It feels so good to admit that to someone, even if it is Wade.
Wade claps his hands together. “Fuck. Well, that changes everything.”
“It’s changed everything for me.”
“And when do I get to meet her?”
“Never.”
He mutters through his teeth, feigning annoyance when I know he’s probably really happy for me. “You know I’ll work it out eventually.”
“You won’t.” Because we meet in secret, and I can never show her off in the way I want to. Which is just completely shit. If only I could take her out for dinner, walk in the park hand in hand together, take her shopping and buy her whatever she wants. My world would be complete. For now, I’ll take anything she’ll give me, including whatever she has planned inside the privacy of my apartment.
“I gotta go.” Because my girl is in my home and ready for me.
Slamming my locker door closed, I dash across the changing room distracted by everything Lola. “See you tomorrow at the same time, yeah?”
“Yeah, and I want to hear all about her then.”
“Not fucking happening,” I call back over my shoulder and pull open the door to leave.
“I will find out who she is, Jordan.”
My balls shoot up inside of my body at his words. I hope not, or he’ll chop them off and use them as hockey pucks.
