13. Chapter 13
Ithink my ovaries just exploded.
Well, hell. How can I be turned on by watching a man skate around with a bunch of little kids? I don't know the answer, but I am swept up right now in watching Logan make these adorable little kids laugh and cheer as he flaunts his skills in front of them.
I move closer to the ice, careful not to step out onto the slick surface. I never learned to ice skate. I hated my dad's job so much that I protested anything to do with ice and hockey. Leaning on the railing, I watch and laugh at the show in front of me. It's hard to tell who is having more fun, Logan or the kids.
Logan spins in a circle, and then his eyes land on me. A wide grin spreads over his face as he catches me watching him.
"Look, kids, that girl standing over there is very important," Logan calls out, causing all the kids to turn and look at me.
I have no idea what game he's playing now, but I fear I may lose. Logan smirks, and those devilish eyes gleam at me. He's loving this moment as I stand in shock while a group of kids stare back at me. I'm supposed to be here to help Sawyer and work. Not be in some weird situation with Logan.
I offer a wave as I try to find Sawyer amongst the people here in the arena. I spotted her to my right and quickly darted in that direction, but Logan wasn't about to let me go that easily.
"Ashlynn!" Logan shouts, his voice echoing throughout the building. "Kids, that's Ashlynn. Her dad is the head coach of the Hawks Hockey team," he roars out.
His words caused me to stop walking and spin around to face the kids. They all start firing questions my way.
"Wow, can we meet him?
"Do you know all of the hockey players?"
"What's it like being famous?"
Their questions are hilarious because I've never thought of my dad as anything more than a man who spends too much time thinking about hockey. I guess it never registered in my brain that here, in Sunnyvale, he"s like a celebrity. Sawyer watches the show with amusement, and I know I can't just ignore these kids. Logan is still smiling at me as I walk back toward the ice.
"Hey, everyone. I will talk with the coach and see if I can arrange for him to meet you all," I offer.
I throw a glare at Logan, who seems satisfied with my discomfort.
"This is the best day ever! We met Logan, and now we will get to meet the coach, too!" one of the kids cheers, causing all the other kids to jump and yell, too.
"Looks like this is going better than expected," Sawyer says, walking over to me.
"I had no idea a local college hockey team could make kids so happy," I say, watching as Logan gets the kids back to moving on the ice again.
Sawyer snaps a few pictures of Logan with the kids. "The Hawks are a huge deal around here. Everyone loves the team and your dad."
I hear what she is saying, but it is still hard to believe. I guess I still have a lot to learn about Sunnyvale and my dad.
"So, what do you need me to do?" I ask, trying to get into work mode. If I think too much about Logan or the complicated relationship I have with my dad, I will get swept away in my own thoughts. Having this job is the only way I can prove to both of my parents that I'm not the huge fuck up they all believe I am.
Sawyer turns to face me. "I'm going to send you the pictures I take here. Go through them and pick five or six of the best that showcase Logan in a good light. Responsible. Loving. Then, send them to the team's social media managers. Since today is going so well, I'm going to put the word out that Logan is working with this charity and see if we can get some local media and journalists to show up, too."
Sawyer is smart and seems really good at her job. I feel a sense of pride that she is entrusting me with a task, even if it is a small one. Most people in my life wouldn't trust me to even be on time, but here I am being asked to do a real job. This whole working thing isn't that bad.
"I can do that. I can also talk to my dad about coming down to one of these meetings with Logan. It would be good for his image, too," I add.
"That's a great idea. These kids are lucky to have Logan helping out. I know he comes off as an asshole sometimes, but deep down he truly is a good guy," she states.
I see a guy I recognize from the team, Topher, one of the assistant coaches, walking our way. Sawyer blushes when he approaches, and I can't help but notice a strong tension floating between them. Clearing his throat, Topher smiles at me as he stops next to Sawyer.
"Hey, Sawyer. Ashlyn," he greets us. "Sawyer, I need to talk with you about the upcoming Vegas tournament. Coach Carl wants all PR to be there and start pushing our presence. We want to get as many local fans to show up as we can since Vegas is only a few hours away."
He stuffs his hands into his jeans as he waits for Sawyer to answer. I almost feel like a third wheel as I watch them. Damn, if they haven't hooked up yet, they need to. The sexual tension is thick right now.
"I think I'm done here," Sawyer says, placing her camera into her bag. "Let's meet in my office, and we can come up with a strategy," she offers.
Topher nods in agreement, offers me a quick goodbye, and then starts to walk toward the elevators down the hall. Sawyer watches him walk away, and I am almost afraid to breathe or move. This moment feels personal.
Finally, she turned back to me, and her cheeks were still rosy red. "Well, looks like I have everything we need. I'll send you those photos later this afternoon. If you could send your approved pictures to social media by tomorrow evening, that would be perfect," she added.
"Sure, I can do that." I smile as she leaves me.
I'm lost in thought as a group of kids race past me. Logan saunters over to me as the kids wave goodbye to him. Their parents are waiting by the exit, and the kids are all talking a million miles per hour as they leave the building. Logan genuinely made their day.
"So, what did you think?" he asks, nudging my shoulder with his.
He's being playful, but it also feels flirty.
"What did I think about…" I trail off, making him work for the response.
Shaking his head, he chuckles. "Come on. What did you think about me out there with the kids? Great, huh?"
He's so full of himself that it's comical. "It went okay. The kids had fun."
Sneering, Logan looks at me like I'm crazy. "You know it was amazing. Those kids loved me and once everyone sees those pictures, fans and sponsors are going to fall back in love with me and my boyish charm," he teases.
I wish I could be angry with him for being so cocky, but I just can't. Even when he's annoyingly arrogant, he still manages to make my heart skip a beat and my lady bits hot.
"Yeah, let's hope they find those images endearing. But seriously, you were great with those kids. It was nice." I manage to sound sincere.
I realize I've been standing here for a while, and I need to get to my dorm and work on some reading I have been assigned. It's still hard to believe that I'm in college and have a job. I don't even recognize myself right now. I go to leave, but Logan stops me.
"Hey, when can I see you again?" he asks.
"Not sure. I guess you will just have to wait and see," I say, winking as I go to walk away.
Logan yells out from behind me, "I love this little game we are playing."
I don't bother turning around as I smile and walk out the door.
