25. Travis
The guys came over straight away, with a change of clothes for me, and I’m still fucking cold an hour later.
Hate the waiting game, fucking hate it.
“You’d think a fucking doctor would tell me what the hell is happening, where are they?” I punch the wall as I pace the room. Quinn came about twenty minutes ago and hasn”t said a word to me. I’m happy he hasn’t because I need to punch something, and if he said one thing to piss me off, it would be him I punch.
No one says anything, Blake has been trying to find something, and Logan is trying to keep everyone out of my way. If someone is walking towards me, he stands in front of me so they walk around, so no-one gets close to me.
“Shit,” I hear Logan, and see Blake power walking over to us. Before I even turn around I know who it is. The wrong goddamn day to be standing in front of me.
Both Logan and Blake stand in front of me, blocking my way to him. There is only one person I”m killing, but for Bea I’m waiting, because she gets to be there, and get her revenge too. She is the only reason he will walk out of here today.
“You three burned the hot-”
“We don’t know what you’re talking about!” Blake snaps at him, it’s best I don’t talk to him. With everything I have learned about the bastard in the last day, he doesn’t want to hear anything from me. “It’s a shame though, we heard about it.”
“You three think you’re untouchable, but I think I proved you”re not.” My dad locks eyes with me, and I smile.
“I’ve never said I’m not untouchable, what I’ve said is you’ll never win again.” I take a step closer, but Blake and Logan still stand between us. “You messed with the wrong girl, you messed with my girl, and she’s not weak, so fucking far from weak. And when she fights this, you better fucking run, because I’ll be coming for you.”
“And I’ll be ready, you three act all big and mighty, but you can’t do anything-” Dad stops when the three of us start laughing.
“Like you’ve worked so hard, you married your wife for money then beat and killed her.” I point to my dad.
“You fucked everyone you could once you married mom for her money, and she killed herself because it was better than living with you.” Blake points to his dad.
“You blackmailed mom to marry you for her money, and killed the man she loved.” Logan adds.
“So what hard work have you done?” I ask them. They think we don’t know anything, but we do, and when all three of them are in the fucking ground it will be best day of my fucking life. “Now get out of my face, before something happens to you, by accident.”
“You’re bodyguards working over time?” he asks, making Blake and Logan roar into laughter.
“For some fucked up reason, we’re protecting you. If you want, we’re happy to move out of the way.” Blake slams his hands into my dad”s chest. “Leave, or we let him go.”
My dad locks eyes with me, glances over my shoulder before smiling at me, as he leaves the hospital. They weren’t here about the hotel, they wanted to see how Bea was. He won’t stop until he gets her.
“No one leaves Bea alone. I will be here, but I have to go see Cain, once I see her.” I need to give him something, the only reason I didn’t give it to him before was in case he didn’t help me. I needed an upper hand on him.
“We’re here,” Logan replies.
The door slams open behind me, and my body finally relaxes when the doctor walks over to us. “Bea?”
“Yes.” I take a step closer to him, and Quinn stands next to me.
“She was in the water a long time, her body shut down due to the extreme cold temperature. We have warmed it back up, but it’s still not where we would like it to. She’s on a ventilator at the moment to help with oxygen getting to the brain. She’s not out of danger yet…” He stops talking, and looks at me shaking his head a little. “She was very weak, and her heart did stop beating, the crew in the helicopter brought her back. Another thirty minutes out there, it would be a different story. Once she’s in the room, you can be with her.” He walks away, and I sit down, because the air has just been kicked out of me.
She died, the words echo in my ear, and I take a deep breath. One of the guys pats my back, letting me know they are here, yet they don’t know what to say to me.
“You two here?” I ask them, and they both nod. Turning to Quinn, who still hasn’t said a word to me. “Once she’s in the room, let me see her, then you can go in.”
“You’re leaving her?” he snaps at me.
Standing up, I bite my inner cheek so I don’t snap at him. “No, I’m never fucking leaving her. But I have to see someone.” All he does is nod his head at me, but I can see him thinking. What? I have no idea, but I’m happy there aren”t any more questions.
“Mr. Parker,” I look over at the nurse, and my body shivers knowing I’m about to see my girl lying helpless. Walking over to the nurse, she begins telling me not to be alarmed by all the tubes and wires. It’s so easy to say, but not easy to see.
She opens the door for me, and it takes me a moment to walk through it, but when I do she shuts the door behind me, and I stare at Bea lying on the bed. The beeping noise is the only sound in the room.
Walking closer to the bed, I close my eyes, and feel the tear land on my cheek. Shit, the last time I cried was when I saw Tess in the bedroom, she looked as white as a ghost.
Now it feels like deja vu because Bea looks so pale, almost as white as a ghost. Her hand is cold to touch, and I quickly place it under the blanket which is warming her body up. Leaning closer I plant a small kiss on her lips.
“Come back to me, Firecracker.” Moving some of her hair out the way. “You can’t leave me, I haven’t stopped having fun yet.” I smile, because I know she would have given me some messed up answer back, because she loves to wind me up.
Crazy but I can’t wait for her crazy ass to wake up and tell me to fuck off, or telling me to choke her. But the first thing I’m doing when this crazy episode of my life is over, is putting a ring on her finger. She’s mine, she will always be mine. There’s so much I want to give her, but first I’m giving her the one thing she did want from me, she’ll make fun of me, but it will be worth watching her smile.
“I promise I’ll be back, just be awake when I do.” I give her a kiss, and leave the room to go see Cain.
I made a promise to my sister when I opened her letter, and I”m going to fulfill the last wish she asked from me.
Knocking on the door, I wait for Cain to shout for me to come in, nothing so I knock again. “Yes!” he shouts, and I open the walk into the dark office, well darkish, he has the side lights on. Cain’s leaning back in his chair with his eyes closed. “How’s your girl?”
I chuckle to myself. “How did you know it’s me?” I ask walking closer to the desk, and pulling out the chair. He doesn’t answer my question. “On a machine.” He finally opens his eyes, and leans forward. “You good?” I ask, I don’t even know how many times I’ve asked him now, but he keeps avoiding it.
“How can I help you tonight?” he asks like he doesn’t have a care in the world.
“Did Tess tell you what was happening at home?” I’m not sure how much of our past he knows, and I have a feeling he won’t be telling me.
He takes a deep breath, before answering. “She did, but it made you into a good fighter.” I’m not sure how to take that comment, but I nod. “If you really want to, I think you could be better than Blake. But you hold back.” Now that does surprise me, because Blake is a lunatic when he fights.
“She always told me I was never alone,” my fingers move over the bracelet, and the engraving on it. “She was talking about you, wasn’t she?” I ask him.
“Travis, what are you doing here?” His voice becomes a little more hard, I see Tess is not an easy subject for him to talk about. He breaks eyes contact with me, and looks out the side window at the cage which has come close to his office.
“I opened Tess” letter, and there was one more in there. She said if I’m opening this letter, then there is one thing she wants me to do for her.” I unzip my jacket a little, and pull out the letters. “These were written to you.” I place them on the desk, and Cain shakes his head slightly, pressing his lips together. “Her letter said-” I pull out the letter from my jeans pocket.
Travis, if you can only do one thing. I would like you to help Carol Foster. Please give these to Cain. I know he will shut the world out, being in the pit has changed him. Every day, he seems to be a different person. But I know under all that is a man who loves me, and I believe he will love again. Give him these, so I can show him the way to be the man I loved.
I love you Travis, you will never be alone.
Cain hasn”t moved a muscle, not even to look at the letters. He finally turns to face me, and nods.
“Is there anything else?” His voice is dead, nothing but cold.
“No,” I get up, but stand by the table. “Cain, you ever need anything-” I stop talking, because no matter what I say, he doesn’t want my help. Fuck, I don’t even think he wants Logan’s help. He doesn’t want people around him, never mind close to him. There is a reason he didn’t want us to tell anyone who he was, and we respect that. No one knows he is Cain Crawford, only the people he wants to tell.
There has to be a reason for it. He’s scared to lose the people around him.
“Travis,” I turn around to face him. “You need anything, call me. If you can’t get in touch with me, call Hayden. He won’t ever say no.”
“If I can’t get in touch with you, where are you?” I ask.
“The pit.” Two words, never seen it, never been close to it, but the word words brings a shiver to me.
“I thought-”
“Travis, you don’t need to know anymore.” He cuts me off, and I place my hands in my pockets. Wondering how much he keeps to himself, and how much pain he’s in. I look at Tess” letters, wondering if they will bring back the man she loved.
Leaving his office I make my way back to the hospital, and hope my girl has woken up, and uses her smart mouth to tell me to fuck off.
I see the Crawford brothers walking in as I get to the bottom of the stairs. “How is your girl?” Mason asks.
“On a machine,” I tell them the same thing I told Cain, there isn’t anything to say.
“You need anything, call us.” Mason pats my shoulder as he walks past me.
“Hayden,” I call him before he can walk past me. “Thank you-” He tilts his head a little. “Cain told me you helped Tess when she needed to see Cain. Thank you.” I look up at the office. “Is he okay?”
“No need to say thanks. She gave Cain a reason to fight down there, and gave him hope. I would do it all again, in a heartbeat.” Hayden stops and looks over my shoulder. “Honest, who knows with him. Just because we’re family, doesn’t mean he talks. He doesn’t tell us anything about the place, or what’s wrong with him. I think with that place, and losing Tess, he closed every door he has.”
I don’t say anything to him, because there isn’t anything to say. But one question I want to ask, but don’t mainly because I don’t think my head can take anymore information. What is the Crawford business? That’s a question for another day, when I don’t have so much shit happening around me.
I tell Hayden I’ll see him around, and leave the club. I race to the hospital to be with my girl.
