25. En’Zal

Royal weddings are usually dull affairs. They take years of planning and scheduling, because everyone needs to be there. All the royal families, all the nieces, nephews, aunts and uncles and other associates.

To pick a date that clashes with one country's holiday is a grave insult.

I say, fuck that.

I'm marrying Stella.

If my friends want to be there, great. If they can't make it, that's okay too. It's still happening. No matter what.

My request to Khi'Zal to plan a grand royal wedding in seven days gave him a minor heart attack, but one look at my face told him I'm serious.

And as I look around the grand chapel of Zalleria, I can proudly say he pulled it off. The place is packed with people; my family, friends and subjects. In fact, my brother has outdone himself. The chapel is adorned with red and gold flowers, reflecting the colors of my kingdom, and my favorite band plays live music.

Several kings are here as well: King Ulde'Ryn and King Co'Ran have shown up, blessing our union. I have their support, and it's good to know that Zalleria does not stand alone.

I stand at the altar, waiting for Stella to make her entrance, my heart pounding with a mixture of excitement and nervousness. It feels surreal that in just a few moments, I will be marrying the love of my life.

As a king, I knew that one day I would be married, but the thought never excited me — because I never felt a single spark with all the Erullian princesses I've met. To me, as a king, weddings were work. Negotiations. Politics.

But now, everything is different. With Stella in my life, I suddenly understand the appeal of this beautiful day and this amazing ceremony.

The murmurs and whispers of the gathered guests fade into a hush as the music shifts. Khi'Zal has done his best to research human wedding ceremonies, and tried to blend Erullian and human customs where possible.

All eyes turn towards the entrance.

There she stands.

My beautiful bride.

She wears an absolutely stunning white dress, a masterpiece of lace and silk. My breath catches in my throat as I take in her beauty.

I am the most blessed man in the universe.

She walks towards me, her cheeks pink. I know she doesn't like to be the center of attention, but by the goddess, she deserves it today.

When she reaches me, I hold out my hand for her. Her fingers interlock with mine, and her touch soothes my nervous heart.

And it is that at that moment when everything goes to shit.
