Player Epilogue- One Month After Saylor’s Epilogue
I shed my cut and boots after entering the door. It was the end of the work week, and I was beyond ready to spend uninterrupted time with my Juno. The past three months since we'd resolved the Bosch issue had been hectic but great, in my opinion. The only blight was that the Dark Patriots hadn't taken down Campbell yet, but their last update a few days ago indicated it was close. They'd gotten someone inside his illegal weapons ring to find and feed them information. They were being hush-hush about who, but they seemed confident it wouldn't be too long before they could end this nightmare.
Everything else was wonderful. I was in love with an amazing woman who agreed to build a home with me and to take my name. I was counting the days until the wedding. She agreed to a July wedding. It was still too far away for me, but it was only three more months. She was planning it with the old ladies' help but refused to tell me anything about it. She wanted it to be a surprise. The guys loved to tease she'd have me in a monkey suit. I told them she wouldn't do that to me, but she might. And if she did, I'd do it gladly, as long as it let me keep her at the end of it all.
"Saylor, where are you?" I called out when I didn't see her in the living room or kitchen. She might be at one of the other ladies' houses. They visited often when they weren't working. She liked to go and spend time with them and help as much as she could with the kids.
I heard a bark from Freya coming from upstairs but nothing from Saylor. Instantly, alarm shot through me. I took the steps two at a time as I bounded up them to get to her. If Freya was here, then so was Saylor. Why wasn't she answering me? Had she fallen and hurt herself? Was she lying unconscious somewhere?
I went straight to our bedroom. As I entered, Freya came out of the bathroom. She gave me one woof, then turned around and went back inside. I ran there as fast as I could. I heard a deep, prolonged gagging followed by vomiting. Oh shit, she was sick. I'd have to adjust my plans for us tonight and likely this weekend. I found her on her knees with her head hanging over the toilet. Her hair was up on her head in a messy bun. I dropped down next to her.
"Baby, look at me. What's wrong? Did you catch that stomach flu that's going around? Shit, I hoped I hadn't brought it home to you." Most of the office had it over the last week and a half. I had avoided it, but it got her.
She raised her head and fixed her tear-eyed gaze on me. Her hand came up, and a finger was pointed at me. When she spoke, her voice was full of accusations. "You. This is all your fault, Brooks O'Connor. My head has been buried in this toilet for days, but today was all day. I can barely keep water down. I'm going to kill you."
"Juno, babe, I'm sorry. Here, let me get you to the bed if you're done. Why didn't you tell me if you've been sick for days? Damn it, we need to have Zara check you over. This doesn't sound right." I helped her to her feet. She diverted to the sink, so I assisted her in getting toothpaste on her toothbrush, and then she brushed and rinsed several times. When she was done, I was walking her to the bed when her cell phone rang. I was planning to ignore it, but she insisted I answer it.
"Whoever it is can wait," I said.
"No, it's probably Zara. She's calling with the lab results. I had her check me out earlier. This isn't normal."
Helping her the rest of the way, I sat her down on the edge and then answered her phone. I put it on speaker.
"Zara, it's Player. Saylor is puking her guts out. She said it's been for days, but today has been all day. You ran tests. Do you know what's causing it? She says it's not normal." Concern grew as I spoke.
There was a pause, and then she chuckled. "Hello to you too. Yes, I have the results. Saylor, can you hear me?"
"Yes, I can hear you."
"Good. I'm glad Player is there. The results we got a couple of weeks ago are the same—"
"Wait. You had tests a few weeks ago. For what? Why didn't you tell me?"
"I needed to be sure of the results. I was scared."
"Baby, you—"
"I hate to interrupt, but you need to hear this. Saylor, there's no reason to be scared. You're still pregnant, but the reason you're so sick is your levels are way too high for how far along you are. I need you to come in for a sonogram. Listen, in my professional opinion, you're having more than one baby, and that's why you're sick. It's perfectly normal in that case. Congratulations, you two. I'll let you absorb the news. Call me if you need me. Bye." And just like that, she hung up.
I sat there frozen in disbelief. My dream, my last desire, had finally happened, and these past months of allowing God to decide had paid off. Joy filled me, and I turned to take her into my arms when she shrieked so loud it hurt my ears.
"Brooks O'Connor, you jinxed me with all that talk about multiples! I'm going to kill you!"
As she went off on how scared and unprepared she was to have two or more babies at once, all I could do was smile. I was going to be a father. All those years of denial had come to an end, and it was all due to Player's Juno. Sweeping her up in my arms, I kissed her. After a second, she kissed me back. We'd be fine as long as we were together. She could do anything. She was a Warrior, after all.
