Lucy

One Year Later

S pencer was on one knee.

I was dressed in my warmest winter attire.

Fireworks were shooting off above us. Real ones, not metaphorical, even though I was so thankful for him and the fireworks he made me see every day.

The Honeybrook Hollow New Year’s Eve Firework show was in full effect. The town center was still decorated for Christmas and Skipper McFadden was hosting the festivities.

Spencer was proposing to me as fat snowflakes plopped on our heads, and my mind was whirling.

It was supposed to be a clear night—we all should have known better.

“I promise to always love you. And I swear on my life that I’ll never leave you. Because without you, my heart won’t beat. I need you to live, Lucy. You’re everything to me. Will you marry me?”

“Yes.”

He slid a round, brilliant solitaire on my finger. Then, he kissed my hand as I sank to my knees on the blanket we’d been lying on to watch the fireworks and kissed him all over as we fell to the ground, wrapped up in each other and the magic we’d made together.
