Chapter 9
My heart is pounding in my chest as I ride the elevator up to my apartment. We started out with dinner at the fanciest restaurant in town and ended with a passionate night of sex. Some of the best sex I have ever had. The man knows his way around women's bodies and I am grateful as fuck. My body is still tingling from his touch.
But my moment of bliss is interrupted as Sophie, my best friend, approaches me with questions about Adler as soon as I walk in the door.
"How was it? It's late, so I'm assuming you slept with him? Oh god please tell me it was mind blowing. He was so fucking hot."
I put my hand up, slipping off my coat and sitting down on the couch. "Girl, it was the best night of my life. Unless he's a psycho, he's mine and I'm not sharing."
"So, do you have any friends he'd be interested in?" She asks, her voice full of excitement.
I shake my head, suddenly reminded of my phone. My legs carry me into my bedroom to grab it off the charger on the nightstand.
I unlock the screen and my eyes fall on the notification of a voicemail. It must have been from the job interview earlier today.
I take a deep breath, my fingers trembling as I press the button to play it.
The voice on the other end of the line is clear and cheerful. "Good news! We'd like to offer you the job. Congratulations! If you are still interested, please be here at eight tomorrow to start the paperwork."
My heart leaps in my chest and a wide grin spreads across my face. I jump up on the bed and do a little dance, finally feeling the relief.
Sophie joins in on my celebration, and soon we're both screaming and laughing on my bed like a bunch of teenagers.
"So with a new job, are you going to have time to date? I mean, you won't have a set schedule like you do now, and that can lead to issues..."
"Girl, the man has his own company. If anything, he will be working more than me. I don't think it will be an issue, plus it's not like he asked me to be his girlfriend or anything. Right now, it's casual."
"If you say so."

Today marks the rest of my life. After struggling to deal with my old boss, I don't ever have to go back and can start at a thriving company. Hopefully, my new boss isn't a total asshat. Fingers crossed.
I put on a navy mid-length dress and black heels after curling my hair and applying my reasonable amount of makeup. Why am I so nervous? It takes me too long to get ready and I miss my mark to see Adler for our morning coffee run-in, so I shoot him a text.
Me: Start a new job today and took too long getting ready. At least you don't have to worry about paying for my coffee =)
The three dots appear and a picture comes through of his cup sitting on a desk, which I presume to be his office.
Me: Nice desk you got there
I grab my purse and keys and lock the door behind me.
Adler: All I can think about is all the things I want to do to you on it.
Oh, come on! I can't be sexually frustrated walking into the new job. He can't do this.
Me: Okay, calm down. Let me know when you want to get together again. I don't think everyone wants to see my naked ass on your desk.
The elevator opens on the main floor and there he is.
"What are you doing here? I give him a hug. "Thought you were already at work?"
"Being the boss has its perks. Your cup of coffee, my lady."
Oh my god! Is he perfect or what? Just show me your flaws now!
"You didn't have to do that."
He places a passionate kiss on my lips. "But I wanted to especially after last night. Would you like to get together again tonight?"
Wow, he is breaking all the dating rules. No waiting to text me until days after our first date. I like this man. "I'm not sure how long I'll be in the office today, but sure."
He puts his hand on the small of my back and leads me out to a car waiting. "Get in. I'll take you wherever you need to go."
When I tell the driver the address, Adler's eyes focus on mine. "Wait, you said you just started a new job?"
"Yeah."
The car moves and he scratches his chin. "You wouldn't be working for Ravenwood now, would you?"
My eyes go wide. "Yeah, you work in the same building. Remember the elevator?"
He shakes his head. "No, sweetheart. I own Ravenwood."
Of course, I'm fucking my boss. That's the only logical explanation for why this has all been too good to be true. "You've got to be fucking kidding me, Adler."
What am I supposed to do now? I don't want to stop seeing him and just because he owns the company, so what? He's not my direct supervisor, so it shouldn't matter what we do in the privacy of our own lives.
"Should I call them and let them know I can't take the job?" I pull out my phone, begging for him to tell me no because if it comes down to it, the job has to come first. Especially after everything I have been through to get it.
"Don't you dare. Just behave yourself in the office and we will be square."
How am I supposed to behave myself having this man around the office with me after everything he does to me in our private time? It's impossible.
Especially going back to thinking about all the things he wants to do with me on his desk...this is not going to be easy.
